An Alkyl Shift happens when the alkyl can be moved so the substituents can be inserted into a more stable carbocation.A Hydride Shift happens when the hydrogen atom can be moved so the substituents can be inserted into a more stable carbocation.

1, 2 Alkyl shift and 1, 2 Hydride shift

E means that the higher priority substituents are placed ACROSS from each other. Z means that the higher priority substituents are placed at the SAME SIDE.

E/Z Alkenes

--> Positive charged carbon atomsThe more stable the carbocation, then the product is the major product.
