The Prophet PBUH never stooped to reciprocating to insults, choosing not to respond at all.
He would smile when he saw his companions refrain from responding to insults. However when his companions would speak up, the Prophet PBUH would leave.
He taught us that when a person stoops to the level of those who insult, they allow the devil to steer their course.
One of the core principals of Islam is to not allow our emotions and actions to be hijacked by the devil.
