He says that a writer shouldn’t spend more than three months writing the first draft of a novel.
MORE IDEAS ON THIS
“On Writing” is not a typical writing guide. It’s the biography of a writer. Sure, he gives a lot of advice regarding the writing process, but the main connectors are his own life and experiences.
The first lesson and the most obvious one is that you have to read and write a lot. He even says that if you don’t have time to read, you don’t have time (nor tools) to write. He adds that reading bad prose will make you a better writer and help will you learn what errors to avoid.
Don’t write an essay (unless you really want it); the story should be the protagonist. This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t ask a specialist if you will write about an airplane crash; it means that you shouldn’t fill your novel with facts.
Don’t wait for the perfect moment — perfect desk, perfect place, perfect silence. You don’t need this to write; you need your laptop (or paper), your will and some amount of imagination.
Take care of what you love in your life. Writing is fantastic, but is not everything.
