How Not to Be Stupid

Domains that plot stupidity

  • Magic: The goal of a magician is to misdirect your attention (make you stupid) so that you do not notice something you should have. The magician does so for entertainment purposes.

Stupidity

Stupidity is not the opposite of intelligence. Stupidity is overlooking or dismissing conspicuously crucial information: the information is in front of you and yet you ignore it.

Domains that plot stupidity

  • Magic: The goal of a magician is to misdirect your attention (make you stupid) so that you do not notice something you should have. The magician does so for entertainment purposes.
  • Frauds, cons, and hoaxes: The conman engineers stupidity for their own gain.

Factors that lead to stupidity

When it comes to overloading our cognitive brains, any one of these factors comes into play, but together they increase the odds that you've been cognitively compromised.
  1. Being outside your usual environment or changing your routines.
  2. Being in the presence of a group.
  3. Being in the presence of an expert.
  4. Doing any task that requires intense focus.
  5. Information overload.
  6. Physical or emotional stress, fatigue.
  7. Rushing or urgency.

What won't help

  • Checklists don't help if you race through them because the stupidity factors override them.
  • Beware of rushing - if you are rushing, don't make any important decisions.
  • When you are fatigued, you may think that cognitively you're okay, but your motor control skills and reflex speed are of someone who is legally drunk.
  • Multitasking is information overload. This is why talking on Bluetooth and driving increases the odds that you can get into an accident.

On Giving Constructive Criticism

Sharing and receiving feedback is necessary for improvement. If you have ideas on how someone can improve, don’t hold your ideas back, share your criticism constructively.

Of course, be sensitive to others’ feelings and offer feedback when you feel the other person is ready to take it. Else, you may come across as imposing your views on others, especially if you repeatedly tell them what to do without them requesting it.

1. Use The Feedback Sandwich

Also known as PIP (Positive-Improvement-Positive), it consists of “sandwiching” a critic between two positive comments in the following manner:

  1. Start by focusing on the strengths — what you like about the item in question.
  2. Then, provide the criticism — things you don’t like and areas of improvement.
  3. Lastly, round off the feedback with (a) a reiteration of the positive comments you began with and (b) the positive results that can be expected if the criticism is acted upon.

A Personal Touch

A job negotiation is preferable in person or on the phone, as compared to the impersonal and cold feel of the email.

Talking on the phone provides you with an opportunity to build a connection so that the recruiter understands you and your motivations, while you have a better grip on their motivations.

If the job negotiation is on email only, be direct and honest. Email lets you strategize your words carefully.

Have An Alternative

Having an alternative, a second job offer with you makes your negotiation game stronger, as the employer knows that you can simply walk away. Having the offer from a prestigious company also strengthens your perceived market value.

Having a BATNA (Best Alternative To a Negotiated Agreement) provides you with confidence, based on how strong the employer perceives it as well as how you perceive it.
