Hierarchy of Knowledge

John Morley (1838 - 1923) was a famous English statesman and biographer. He structured the value of knowledge into a pyramid:

  1. We “know best” what is “divined by native instinct"
  2. This is followed by real-life experiences
  3. There is quite some value from insight gained by "reflecting" on books
  4. The lowest tier of knowledge: things read directly in books.
