The Walking Dead has taught us that it's not easy to survive in an undead wasteland. The last couple of years has shown us that a zombie apocalypse is perhaps not that far-fetched. Real survival experts and experienced preppers can give us tips for surviving a doomsday scenario.

John Ramey, the founder of survivalist company The Prepared, doesn't recommend putting your money into a bunker. Instead, we should focus on making our existing homes and communities more resilient. Your home is your castle. It's your base for any emergency. If you had to lock yourself in your home right now, no water, no gas, no electricity or communication, how long can you live there? It should be two weeks at a minimum because that covers most emergencies like natural disasters.

Surviving an emergency

Basic supplies include food, water, health, communication, first aid supplies, hygiene supplies. You need a gallon of water per person per day and filtering products to make water safe to drink. Keep a 'bug out bag'. It is a bag of essential supplies you can grab when you need to leave the safety of your home. It should contain a lighter or waterproof matches, an emergency blanket, sleeping bag, freeze-dried food, flashlight, batteries, solar radio, water purifier, camping stove, knife, gun and medical kit. A bicycle is a classic bug-out vehicle.

Be well stocked with basic supplies

You will need first aid and a core medical understanding of cleaning and dressing a wound. For example, if Daryl from The Walking Dead gets hit in the shoulder with a crossbow bolt, how will you handle it? Outdoor survival skills are also essential. Can you read a map and start a fire? Do you know how to create a winter shelter? Do you pay attention to what's going on around you or how to diffuse tense situations?

Skills to use your supplies

At some point, you may be forced to leave the house and find shelter elsewhere. Would you know where to go? If a zombie apocalypse happens, you will need community as community wins most of the time compared to being alone. We are not machines. We get sick, we need to sleep, we can't learn every skill we'll need through every calamity. Knowing someone that can help can save the day.

How you deal with zombies depend on what kind you meet. If you get into a confrontation with a slow one, just move around them. But if you meet a fast-mover, you know there is more. So you have to turn to stealth. Move in the shadows, underground, in any way to avoid them. Make use of dogs, who can sense threats or major changes and warn you in advance. For example, something is up if they start to act strange, growl, show their teeth, or pace a lot.

On the one side, we have the interesting stuff that is incoherent; on the other, we have stuff that is coherent but meaningless.

The media landscape is shifting

We may watch stuff that doesn’t make sense and leave us fixed in a sort of hypnagogic state. We pay attention to the traditional media houses, but we completely miss important things because they are filtered out by whatever the dominant media narrative is.  We pay attention to the media narrative because our mind is looking for symbols to inform us what is the important narrative. Or that has been vetted. We’re unreachable by real art. The art created now that matters, that is appropriate to this time, and would genuinely pierce the cultural consciousness is mostly unseen.

Why we're fixated on the unimportant and miss the crucial things

People these days try to find meaning in things like polyamorous relationships, travelling, or being an influencer. We emptied our life of real meaning, then tried to replace it with nothing. We tear down marriage and replace it with nothing. We tear down the office, community, the small town square, and replace them with nothing.  If you want to have a meaningful life, get married, have kids, live within your means, find work that you find purposeful and fulfilling, participate in your community.

This default path is a socially approved narrative about how to live: Study hard, go to college, get a good job, save money, get married, have kids. Then, when you're old, relax and enjoy the utopia until you die. Yet, this path, with all its promises, crushes your sense of well-being and dampens the joy of existence.

Cultural gravity is to blame

You know life is short, that you should avoid trivial pursuits, that you want to be happy. Thanks to social media, news reports and violent images that bombard us at all hours, we often experience what experts call vicarious trauma when a horrific event occurs. It’s in our physiological nature as human beings to feel some amount of empathy and sorrow for others dealing with a traumatic event. Even though we’re not physically present, we still feel the mental health effects of what’s going on.
This is applicable to any grim situation. An impending war, a relentless virus, a devastating mass shooting ― you don’t have to be immersed in the crisis to be affected by it. If you are dealing with feelings of unrest, anxiety or doom right now, know that it’s completely normal. And while you may not be able to abate it entirely, it is crucial to know how to stay informed while protecting your mental health.

Disinformation spreads like wildfire during times of crisis. Make sure you’re following credible sources and engaging with confirmed reports, tweets and other content). 
If possible, try to find multiple sources confirming the same information before you share or even necessarily believe a report. Spreading and buying into inaccurate stories, photos and videos only contributes to your own panic and anxiety, and the panic and anxiety of others.

It’s unrealistic to suggest logging off entirely, but it’s vital to set some boundaries when it comes to social media. Stay informed, then give your brain a break.
For example, try setting aside a block of time to check in on the news. If you find yourself reaching for your phone at night when you can’t sleep, try directing your attention to a lighter part of the internet instead of scrolling through headlines.
