An FBI Agent's 8 Ways to Spot a Liar

Come across as empathetic in conversation, and you'll get the person to open up more than when you are cold and accusatory.

1. Build rapport.

A deceptive person will try to anticipate your questions, so that their answers sound instinctive and natural. They may even practice answering specific questions ahead of time.Ask them something they don't expect, and they'll stumble.

2. Surprise them.

Liars tend to speak more than truthful people in an attempt to sound legitimate and win over their audience. They will also use more complex sentences to hide the truth.

3. Listen more than you speak.

"No" is a key word to observe if you suspect someone is trying to mislead you.A person is often demonstrating deceptive behavior when they:·       say "no" and look in a different direction;·       say "no" and close their eyes;·       say "no" after hesitating;·       say "noooooooo," stretched over a long period of time;·       say "no" in a singsong manner.

4. Pay attention to how they say "No."

A subtle change in a person's deportment can be a strong sign of deception.Be careful if a person:·       exhibits lapses in memory at critical times (despite being alert in earlier conversation);·       answers questions with very short answers, refusing to provide details;·       begins speaking more formally (this is a sign the person is getting stressed);·       uses extreme superlatives or exaggerated responses (everything is "awesome" or "brilliant" instead of good).

5. Watch for changes in behavior.

Truthful people tend to add details and remember more facts as they repeat their story. Liars, on the other hand, memorize their stories and try to keep them the same. (If they add details, they often don't add up.) If you suspect someone is being deceptive, ask the person to recall events backward rather than forward in time.For example, start at the end of a story and ask them to explain what happened right before that point. And then, before that... and so on.For truthful people, this makes recall easier. Liars often simplify the story to avoid contradicting themselves.

6. Ask for the story backward.

Don't get me wrong, there are genuinely nice people in the world. But watch out if someone is trying too hard to make a good impression.Agreeing with all of your opinions, constantly offering praise, and laughing at all of your jokes are signs that one lacks authenticity and sincerity.

7. Beware of too many compliments.

Of course, none of us want to be lied to. But it's important to remember that people are uneasy with certain questions due to personal embarrassment, or because they are extremely dependent on the outcome of the conversation.If you're puzzled by a response, explore with follow-up questions. When in doubt, continue to ask discerning questions. In time, you'll be able to spot deceit like a pro.

The State of "FLOW" or "Zero THOUGHT" 

There are both practical and psychological reasons why a colleague might try to go above you, says Adam Galinsky, a professor at Columbia Business School and coauthor of "Friend and Foe: When to Cooperate, When to Compete, and How to Succeed at Both". Practically speaking, they may want a different answer or outcome than you’ve given. Psychologically, it’s possible that they’re keen to show they have more clout or authority than you do. It could also be that they’re conflict averse and afraid to address the issue with you directly.

What The Experts Say

Webb suggests you start by considering what you actually know. You may think your coworker went over your head to spite you, but perhaps you’re misreading the situation. Look at only the facts and avoid snap judgments. For example, rather than thinking, “He completely disregarded my authority,” tell yourself, “He had a conversation with my boss about the initiative he’s working on.”

Question Your Assumption

If you don’t know all the facts of the situation – perhaps you just heard about the conversation through the office rumor mill – try to find out what really happened, says Webb. You might go to your boss and ask in a neutral way about what transpired: “Hey, I heard you and Carlos were talking about his new idea.” Take care to maintain a casual, non-accusatory tone so that your boss doesn’t think you’re trying to start a feud.

Ask your coworker if the two of you can talk — preferably in a private room. Keep an open mind as you enter the conversation, says Webb. “Don’t go into the conversation with the intention of sticking it to your coworker. Instead think about the importance of your working relationship.” Focus on your ultimate goal, whether it’s to restore trust or to protect your authority. And be ready to hear what he has to say about the situation and why he did what he did.

Approach Your Colleague

Begin by saying what you know in a “straightforward” way, says Galinsky. Explain why you’re disappointed, but stay away from words like “angry” or “betrayed,” Webb adds. That may be how you feel, but it’s going to put your coworker on the defensive. You might say something like: “I heard you talked to Roger about your initiative after we discussed it and that made me feel a bit concerned that we’re not communicating well.” Then ask for — and listen to — his perspective.

State Your Position 

Once you’ve shared your views with one another, decide together how to remedy the situation. “Try asking them for their thoughts first, then build on their suggestions. Research shows that people feel far more attachment to any idea that they’ve had a hand in shaping,” explains Webb.

Problem-Solve Together 

You should also discuss how you’ll handle similar situations in the future. Ideally, you and your colleague will agree that she should come directly to you next time. But if she’s not immediately on board with that plan, try to show her that going over your head is not only hurtful; it’s also ineffective, says Galinsky. Explain that you and your boss are in regular contact, so you’re going to find out if someone goes over your head. You might say, “I meet with Roger regularly to discuss our group’s priorities and he usually lets me know if he gets requests from other teams.”

Clarify The Lines Of Communication 

This breach in the chain of command may have annoyed your boss or caused her to question your ability to do your job. And, if she failed to redirect the colleague to you, you might be ticked off at her. So, once you’ve settled things with your colleague, make sure to also sit down with your manager to talk about what happened, why it happened, and how to avoid similar situations in the future. Again, lay out what you know and how it made you feel, then listen to her perspective: “I heard that Carlos talked to you about his initiative and that made me concerned that I might be out of the loop.

Repair Your Relationship With Your Boss

<ul><li>Keep an open mind and be willing to hear your coworker’s side of the story.</li><li>Avoid words like “angry” or “betrayed.” Even if authentic, they will put your coworker on the defensive.</li><li>Talk to your boss to be sure your reputation isn’t damaged.</li></ul>

All around the world, disgruntled employees have made it very clear that they do not wish to receive any work-related communication post-work. Governments are trying to table laws to please the common populace while employers have already either started falling in line or are working around the clock to circumvent the proposed changes by using diverse interpretations of the legal words.How does it concern you?If you are an employee and your workplace values you and your mental wellbeing, they should already have a written policy. What's happening?

The new laws/policies, commonly referred to as the Right to Disconnect are been drafted but their implementation has been largely limited to countries in the European Union and a few South American nations. In some countries, especially in Europe, the right to disconnect is somehow incorporated into the law, but it may also be included in the policies of many large corporations. Many countries have tabled and passed bills of similar nature like Chile, Peru, and Canada (Ontario’s Bill 27), whereas others are struggling to pass the draft beyond the committee levels like the City of New York.

What’s happening across the globe?

<ul><li>If companies cannot negotiate an agreement with employees on the use of information and communications technology, they are required to adopt an employer-created “charter”.</li><li>It is not made with the new Hybrid & WFH (work from home) routines and is centred around the traditional workday.</li><li>It can not be applied feasibly to sectors where a routine workday can not be defined like healthcare workers.</li><li>These policies may make employers take a strict line with employees forcing them to take time off to attend to personal matters during work hours and work later without overtime pay.</li></ul>

What is not clear:

<ul><li>The act of contacting an employee in case of emergency can not accurately be defined as to what is considered an emergency and under what context would it be compensated.</li></ul>While the laws are surely a step in the right direction and aspirational, it doesn’t clearly differentiate between different job types, and sectors. It is open to interpretation and the possibility of future amendments. Further research on this ever-changing job market is required to implement future amends and provide employees with a healthy balance so they can exercise their right to rest, and privacy.
