I never allow myself to have an opinion on anything that I don’t know the other side’s argument better than they do.

The work required to have an opinion is the hard part, that’s why people avoid it. You have to do the reading. You have to talk to competent people and understand their arguments. You have to think about the key variables and how they interact over time. You have to listen and chase down arguments that run counter to your views. You have to think about how you might be fooling yourself. You have to see the issue from multiple perspectives. You have to think. You need to become your most intelligent critic and have the intellectual honesty to kill some of your best-loved ideas.

To Painstakingly Form An Idea And Then Cold-bloodedly Kill It.  

We all are learning, modifying, or destroying ideas all the time. Rapid destruction of your ideas when the time is right is one of the most valuable qualities you can acquire. You must force yourself to consider arguments on the other side.

Doing the work required to hold an opinion means we can argue against ourselves better than others can. Only then can we say, “I can hold this view because I can’t find anyone else who can argue better against my view.”Doing the work counteracts our natural desire to seek out only information that confirms what we believe we know.

The Work Required To Have An Opinion

The difference between the people who do the work and the people who just reel off memorized opinions is huge. When you do the work, you can answer the next question. You know when to follow the rules and when they’ll get you in trouble.The people who know the memorized answer are chauffeurs. They can’t answer the next question. We’re all chauffeurs in some aspects of our lives. This is why understanding your circle of competence is so critical to living a rational life.

The Respondents And The Chauffers

The ability to destroy your ideas rapidly instead of slowly when the occasion is right is one of the most valuable things. You have to work hard on it. Ask yourself what are the arguments on the other side. It’s bad to have an opinion you’re proud of if you can’t state the arguments for the other side better than your opponents. This is a great mental discipline.

Doing the work required to hold an opinion means we can’t make up our mind with a high degree of confidence right away.Doing the work forces us to challenge our beliefs because we have to argue from both sides. We become the somewhat impartial judge. What’s on trial is our own opinion.

The Work Required to Have an Opinion

<a href="https://fs.blog/intellectual-giants/richard-feynman/">Richard Feynman </a>was a Nobel prize-winning physicist. His real superpower, however, was his ability to explain complicated subjects to others in simple terms. He realized that jargon, vague words, and complexity reveal a lack of understanding.There are four key steps to the Feynman Technique:<ol><li>Choose a concept you want to learn about</li><li>Explain it to a 12 year old</li><li>Reflect, Refine, and Simplify</li><li>Organize and Review</li></ol>

The Feymann Technique

Feynman understood <a href="https://fs.blog/2015/01/richard-feynman-knowing-something/">the difference between understanding something and knowing the name of something </a>, and it’s one of the most important reasons for his success. He was never content with just knowing the name of something. He wanted to understand it at a deeper level. The person who says he knows what he thinks but cannot express it usually does not know what he thinks.

Two Types of Knowledge

What topic are you curious about? Once you identify a topic, take out a blank sheet of paper. Write out everything you know about the subject you want to understand as if you were teaching it to a child. As you learn more about the topic, add it to your sheet. Often people find it helpful to use a different color pen so you can see your learning grow. Once you think you understand the topic, move on to step 2.

Step1: Choose A Concept You Want To Learn About

Now when you think that you understand a topic reasonably well, explain it to a 12-year-old.Use your sheet as a reference and try to remove any jargon or complexity. Only use simple words. Only use words a child would understand. Anyone can make a subject complicated but only someone who understand it can make simple.

Step2: Explain It To A 12 Year Old

Only when you can explain the subject in simple terms do you understand it.Simple is beautiful.Review your notes to make sure you didn’t mistakenly borrow any jargon or gloss over anything complicated.Read it out loud as if to a child. If the explanation isn’t simple enough or sounds confusing, that’s a good indication that you need to reflect and refine.Go back to the source material, reviewing the parts you don’t quite understand yet.Repeat until you have simple explanation.

Step3: Reflect, Refine And Simplify

To test your understanding in the real world, run it by someone else. How effective was your explanation? What questions did they ask? What parts did they get confused about? When you’re happy with your understanding, take the page you created with a simple explanation and put it into a binder. Following this technique for everything you learn gives you a binder full of learning that you can review a couple of times a year.

By explicitly choosing the first 100 respondents, the engineer introduces unfairness in his data collection method.</li><li>The solution: select a random sample of 100 users from your pool of email respondents instead of the first 100.</li></ul>

<ul><li>Reporting bias refers to people’s (conscious and unconscious) tendencies to suppress the information they report.</li><li>Example: Many amazon products have more 5-star and 1-star reviews than 2, 3, or 4-star reviews because people who have extreme experiences (either positive or negative) are more likely to post a review than those who have neutral experiences.</li></ul>

<ul><li>The problem: An engineer that uses online reviews as their primary data source may create an AI model that is great at detecting extreme sentiments but not so much at detecting more neutral, subtle sentiments.</li><li>The solution: Consider broadening the data collection scope to account for the underrepresented data.</li></ul>
