This principle allows us to express anything and everything, because even though the number of words in any given language is limited, the number of combinations of words isn’t. Since we use the rules of grammar to create our own sentences, we’re not limited in how much we can express, which makes it easier to get your point across.

Four-Step Method for Language Learning

<ul><li>Time: 1-2 weeks (or longer for languages that have a new alphabet that will take some time to get comfortable with).</li><li>There are a few routes to learn pronunciation.</li><li>Learn the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) for the English language first.</li></ul>

Stage 1: Learn the Correct Pronunciation of The Language

<ul><li>Time: About 3 months</li><li>This stage involves two different time commitments: building your vocabulary and grammar flashcards and reviewing the deck.</li><li>Using frequency lists to guide your vocabulary acquisition.</li><li>Cover all the words in a 2000 word frequency list as a foundation and add any specific vocab you need for your own interests.</li><li>Most people's eventual goals will be ~2000-6000 words, plus around 1000 grammar cards.</li></ul>

Stage 2: Vocabulary and Grammar Acquisition

Use Anki, a free flashcard program that runs on smartphones and every computer platform, to practice thinking in the language directly.Once you have a decent vocabulary and familiarity with grammar, you can start writing essays, watching TV shows and reading books, and talking (at least to yourself!) about the stuff that you see and do. Every writing correction gets added to the Anki deck, which continues to build your vocab and grammar.

Stage 3: Listening, writing and reading work

Once you can more or less talk (haltingly, but without too many grammar or vocab holes) and write about most familiar things, find some place to immerse yourself in the language and speak all the time.The more intense you can make it, the faster your brain will adapt and learn how to put all the info you learned in stages 1-3 together quickly enough to turn into comfortable, fluent speech.

I Learned to Speak Four Languages in a Few Years: Here's How

Much of what we learn is beyond our ability to recall later. For example, how well would you do at a final exam for a class you studied a decade ago?
However, learning something the second time round is much faster.

Learning and recalling

Early theories of forgetting were based on decay. They assumed unused memories weaken over time, much like unused muscles. Another major factor in forgetting is Interference from other memories. The more memories we acquire, the more they become associated with familiar cues, making it harder to retrieve a particular memory. This is not a defect. It’s a feature. Memory is only useful if we retrieve the right memories at the right times and suppress all competing alternatives.

Why we forget

If a memory is very useful, despite hardly remembering it, the memory becomes much easier to recall. This is the basis behind the concept of desirable difficulties.  We benefit more from remembering something when the clues for bringing up the memory are weaker. That is why testing is better than re-reading for studying, and spaced practice beats cramming, and mixing problem sequences is better.

It’s common to feel that you’ve forgotten everything after years of absence from studying a topic.  However, research on memory suggests relearning tends to be much faster than initial learning.

Take a book with fairly standardized formatting, meaning mostly text with few bullet lists or graphs.<ol><li>Figure out roughly how many words are on a page.</li><li>Establish your baseline. Read for one minute at your normal speed. Then figure out how many words roughly you have read. That’s your words per minute rate (wpm). </li><li>Train yourself to focus on the middle third of the page while just dotting down the page.</li><li>Track with your finger. Trace underneath the line as you read to ensure your eye doesn’t bounce to previously read material.</li><li>For five minutes, read slightly faster than your comprehension allows.</li></ol>

Reading speed practice

We were taught to read word by word, so we start at the furthermost left word of a book and read to the furthermost right word. However, the problem with that is that the margins don’t have any words. <ul><li>Remedy this by drawing lines going down on either side of the page. But draw it one word in on both sides.</li><li>Instead of looking at the first word all the way to the left, start at the line you drew on the left and then end at the line at the right. You should not have trouble reading and still have full comprehension.</li><li>Do this for 5 - 10 pages, then indent by another word on either side. </li></ul>
