Memorization means purposely learning something so that you remember it with muscle memory; that is, you know the information without needing to look it up.

What is memorization?

Many of us think memorization is a useless practice forced on us from the early days of our education. But is it that useless?With the advent of the internet, we are used to having knowledge at our fingertips. However, it is knowing what knowledge is available and how to integrate it into our existing knowledge base that is important

Is memorizing things useful?

A lot of life involves reasoning: taking this information you have and making hypotheses that connect different pieces in a way that provides a deeper understanding of them.The more information you have muscle memory for, the more you can use to reason about. This is why having more knowledge generally helps you to tackle more complex problems.If you have memorized knowledge you have also pre-processed it in a way that aligns with how you think, thus helping you during your reasoning.

The more we know the better we reason

The problem with not memorizing is that you're limited by the lack of data points, or nodes that you can make connections between. In short, you're limited by your lack of understanding of what to look up.A common example is that many engineers due to their overuse of StackOverflow end up solving problems without actually understanding how they solved them, or even worst, without learning anything. After a few months, if the problem arises again, they would try to brute force searches on Google to find again a solution.

What if we don't memorize?

Memorizing information gives you a concrete organizational scaffolding and context in which to put new information. Memorizing an organized set of facts means that new information can be inserted in an orderly way, sandwiched, or enhancing other facts in an organized framework.

What does memorization give me?

I have always been against memorization but this article has changed my view on it, especially considering the examples of software engineers that are just searching on the web for any problem they have.

Articulating An Idea 

You need to get people excited if you want to get peoples backing. It is very important to do so because then you will get support for what you want to take place You can apply this by always trying to get better at pitching or selling an idea, you also want to make sure you are invested in the idea as well

Getting People Excited 

This is a combination of steps 1 and 2 it means that it is important to be able to show people a vision and have people able to follow itGet an idea then try and convince someone your comfortable with that idea ask where you did good or where you can improve

Selling The Vision 

Networking is one of the most important skills that you need to have to be successful in the workplace. It’s who you know, you better believe that Network whenever you can it’s pretty easy once you get over the fear. Meet new people and try to be genuine and of good help that is very important

Casual Networking 

Always try and give more than you take that is important because it shows that you can give value when you bring value that is the only way that you can truly start making money

We take books for granted because we assume people absorb knowledge by reading sentences:“The author describes an idea in words on the page; the reader reads the words; then the reader understands the idea. When the reader reaches the last page, they’ve finished the book.”This assumption, called Transmissionism is deeply flawed. It's not based on any cognitive model & does not work in preactice for the majority of readers.

We don't absorb knowledge by reading words on a page

To understand something, you must actively engage with it. This is what happens when books work:<ul><li>Read something, then pause and reflect. Usually the internal monologue may sound like “This idea reminds me of…,” “This point conflicts with…,” “I don’t really understand how…,” etc. </li><li>Take notes, but don't simply transcribe the author’s words: summarise & synthesise.</li></ul>These skills fall into a bucket which learning science calls “metacognition.” They are challenging to learn & that many adults lack them.
