In between it's a messy middle: a space of abundant information & unlimited choice that shoppers have learned to manage using a range of cognitive shortcuts. The space is made of:<ul><li>Exploration</li><li>Evaluation</li></ul>Consumers explore their options & consideration sets, then – either sequentially or simultaneously – they evaluate the options & narrow down their choices. After the purchase, the experience of the product can contribute back to exposure through review or social media posts.

As people explore and evaluate in the messy middle, cognitive biases shape their behavior. The purchase journey: How people decide what to buy lies in the ‘messy middle’

My third article received 3,000+ likes and 40,000+ views. I attribute it to (mostly) luck and writing well. Although we can’t control luck, we can learn to write better. Here is how.

People think good writing is about beautiful sentences and carefully researched content. It is not. Good writing boils down to good ideas made easily understandable. Beautiful sentences and well-researched content may help achieve that, but purposelessly adding them is not good writing.

What makes good writing.

Good writing is hard because finding good ideas is hard. Good ideas are novel, credible and relevant. Novel ideas are often unpopular ideas. Novelty is easy, but novel and credible is hard. Credible ideas come from critical independent thinkers thinking about a topic for a long time. Think critically to notice faults in existing ideas. Assess independently to propose an alternative. As a general rule, write about unpopular ideas that you think is true.

What makes good ideas.

My previous article was “<a href="https://medium.com/@marvelgomulya/dont-be-a-nice-person-9aa3f9bca28d">Don’t be a nice person </a>.” It grabs attention. It brings an unpopular perspective. I’ve backed it with logical explanations which makes it somewhat credible. It could be better, but it has done pretty well so far. Good ideas are relevant . The reader cares about the ideas. This implies that the quality of writing is relative to the reader. An audience will not appreciate an irrelevant article.

We don’t have to care much about this. A consistently insightful writer will eventually find their audience. The best ideas are completely unique, have credible arguments and is relevant to a lot of people. Satisfy this and we get Einstein’s general relativity.

Essays that are easily understandable have exceptional clarity. Use simple words and phrases . Instead of “empirical feedback” use “feedback”. It focuses readers on the ideas being conveyed rather than the meaning of the words. Write succinctly and directly . Break down long sentences into shorter ones. Instead of “just so I could”, write “because”. Avoid putting multiple ideas in a sentence. If a word isn’t necessary, cut it. Most adjectives and adverbs can be cut from writing. Write “happy” instead of “very happy.”

What makes writings easily understandable.

Create visual hierarchy . Use bold to highlight important points. Section different ideas using sub headers. Use quotes and differentiate them from sentences. Use visual cues to inform the reader on what is important. Use active voice. We comprehend “the man drove the car” better than “the car was driven by the man”. Put the object (man) first then the action (drove).

If you’re scrolling through social media, how often do you stop on posts that only contain text? I find myself paying attention to anything with images more than anything else.  But not all pictures are created equally when it comes to marketing. It’s always better to use photos of people’s faces to get more attention. And the best way to get people to notice you is to include a baby’s face!

Babies can’t take care of themselves and are more vulnerable to predators. If they pull at our feelings, however, we take care of them and their odds of surviving increase. Lesson 2:  In Person Communication Is More Effective

Perhaps you’ve heard of the ultimatum game. Two participants get an amount of money and one gets to split it while the other has to choose whether or not to take the split. In other words, <a href="http://fourminutebooks.com/how-to-win-friends-and-influence-people-summary/">casual conversation </a>goes a long way!

And as long as you’re talking to someone, make sure that you’re on their right side. <a href="https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s00114-009-0571-4">Studies </a>done by scientists at the University Gabriele d’Annunzio in Italy discovered that people trust information spoken into the right ear. Even when making requests you have a higher chance of success by following this pattern. One place the researchers observed this was in nightclubs. They discovered that most people talked into each other’s right ears. In testing this by asking people for cigarettes, they had more success by speaking into their right ear.

Pineapples!  I’ll bet you weren’t expecting that one, were you? But you’re probably listening to me now, right? That’s because I surprised you with something you didn’t expect. Let’s look at how this works on a psychological level.

Lesson 3:  To Get People’s Attention Surprise Them

<a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4232337/">UK researchers </a>have identified the hippocampus as the place in our brains that allows us to predict what will happen next. This small part of the brain uses the sequence of events that we normally follow when we get certain cues to anticipate the next event.  For example, when your <a href="http://fourminutebooks.com/brain-rules-summary/">brain </a>saw “Lesson 3” above, it used the information it got when you read what came in lessons 1 and 2 to predict what would happen next. When I used the surprising word pineapple first instead of going into why surprise works, it got you to react.

One way you can practice this is by replacing a word in a common phrase. If you have a coffee shop, for example, you might use “coffee it up” instead of “cough it up.” You can also try to surprise people with a unique design or image as well. This technique even dates back to the days and writings of Shakespeare. He would often misuse words or <a href="http://fourminutebooks.com/inventology-summary/">invent </a>new words altogether. Some scholars say that this is the main reason that his writings are so popular even today.  So if you want to make people pay attention to whatever you’re selling, put a bird on it. I mean, surprise them!
