A French philosopher he developed a unique worldview based on the concept of mimetic desire. According to him, human beings are constantly seeking to imitate and emulate the desires of others, and this process of imitation drives much of human behavior and social dynamics.His main idea is that desire is always mediated through the desires of others, and that this process of imitation creates conflicts and rivalries that are fundamental to human society.He is gaining a lot of praise recently with lots of Silicon Valley luminaries listing him as a major intellectual influencer.

René Girard

Girard observed that our desires are social. We rarely desire an object for it's intrinsic functional qualities. We usually use the objects as proxies for an identity we envy. Desire are not fixed or innate, but rather constantly changing & under the influence of the people we encounter. We can see this in advertising, when we buy sneakers to be like Jordan, not to run a marathon. When we date a certain person because others will see us a certain way and so on.

Mimetic Desire

For Girard, we are different than animals because of our desires, our myths, our lies. We invent stories, we go to war for abstract concepts etc. This is a the object of his psychological focused philosophy. Similar to how class was the nexus of socialism, how casts worked in Hinduism, or rationality in liberalism.

Spirited Animals

According to Girard, is a social mechanism that arrises from a cataclysmic event. A troubled society murders an "innocent" victim (blamed for all evils) & thus gains cathartic release and gains new new Gods. This event is dramatised, captured in myth and then translated back into the society in the form of rituals & prohibitions. Ex: Julius Caesar is ritually killed as he is blamed for the fall of the Republic. However, as his nephew becomes emperor, Caesar becomes a God. And later on an institution emulated by all rulers.

Girardian Scapegoating

The Christian mythology follows the same Girardian arc: civil unrest in Judea, Jesus crucified as a scapegoat, turned into a God, institutionalized through the church. However, the unique element is that the story is told for the perspective of the victim, rather than of the accusers. In the Bible, the victim is innocent, the crowd was mistaken.It is this unique care for the victim that spills into our modern worldview and institutions: from human rights to work ethic. In a sense we all live in a Christian society even if we don't consider ourselves as Christians.

The Uniqueness of Christian Scapegoating 

For Girard, violence is natural. But modern day seems quite peaceful. And Girard credits 2 institutions:<ul><li>capitalism: which Girard sees it as a status seeking game more than a rational transfer of resources.</li><li>laws: a set of institutions that mediates disputes and acts as a monopoly on violence </li></ul>For Girard capitalism is this stew of violent energies that needs to be contained through laws. One can not function without the other.

In 2015, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desmond_Tutu">Desmond Tutu </a>, a former South African Archbishop and anti-apartheid pioneer, traveled to Dharamsala, a place in India and home to His Holiness <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dalai_Lama">the Dalai Lama </a>, for his 80th birthday. Both have fought non-violently against oppression in their countries for over 50 years, while leading millions of people in their spiritual journeys. Hence, they took this special occasion as a chance to sit down together and evaluate one of life’s most important questions: how do we find <a href="https://fourminutebooks.com/resisting-happiness-summary/">joy </a>in the face of suffering?

Indeed, a long sit-down it was. Tutu stayed for seven days, during which he and the Dalai Lama intensely discussed this issue. Douglas Abrams, Tutu’s long-time co-writer and editor, documented the conversation, so that one year later, their answers would be available to the rest of the world in the form of a book, <a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/29496453-the-book-of-joy">The Book Of Joy </a>.

Especially in the Western world, we are constantly being sold on the idea that it’s possible to remove all suffering from your life. There’s a pill for every ill, money solves most problems, and once you finally have that spouse, the home and the two kids, you’ll be happy forever.But, speaking of kids, how do they arrive in this world? Through an excruciating process called giving birth. If women didn’t power through it in exchange for the bundles of joy kids are, the human race could pack it in right now!

Lesson 1: There is no life without suffering.

Birth is just the most obvious example, however. If you think back to your most formative experiences, chances are there was some anger, frustration or sadness involved, which ultimately helped you grow tremendously.The Dalai Lama and Desmond Tutu agreed on the importance of suffering, but only if you experience it in a special way: while suffering, you must shift your focus away from yourself and on to others . This is one of the four big thoughts in <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lojong">Lojong </a>, the Buddhist mind training practice the Dalai Lama preaches, which consists of 59 slogans.

Focusing intensely on your own pain only makes it grow, while <a href="http://fourminutebooks.com/superbetter-summary/">looking to others helps you deal with it </a>in two ways: <ol><li>If you go out of your way to help someone, you forget about your own problems and feel better, because you’re doing good. </li><li>You’ll often see that someone else has it a lot worse than you do. </li> </ol>

For example, the Dalai Lama once had to cancel giving a talk and go to the hospital with severe stomach pains. On the way to the clinic, he saw a sick, old man on the street. Knowing the man would probably soon die and feeling his agony, it was easier for him to muscle through. There was nothing he could have done, but at least he turned the man’s suffering into a small force for good. So you see, it’s not about being a saint, it’s about managing suffering in the best way possible.

<a href="http://fourminutebooks.com/insight-summary/">Self-awareness </a>helps a lot when dealing with suffering, because it allows you to see what you control and what you cannot influence. A lot of pain is inflicted upon us externally, for example through unlucky events, natural disasters, sicknesses, or bad things that happen to people close to us.While you can’t prevent these darker aspects of life, there is a corresponding element you do control: your reaction to those events.

Suffering often leads to fear and frustration, but those are creations of our minds, not reality, as the Dalai Lama and Desmond Tutu agree . <a href="http://fourminutebooks.com/meditations-summary/">Mental immunity </a>, as they call it, is the equivalent of a healthy immune system: you’ll still feel pain, but you’ll be able to ward it off a lot better.For example, when you treat a traffic jam as an opportunity to practice patience, rather than fretting about whether you’ll make it on time, you’ll be a lot less stressed.

Whether the source of our suffering is internal or external, it is often the result of us having had expectations that didn’t end up matching reality. We don’t expect traffic jams, deadly diseases, or price increases at the grocery store, so reality “fails” us and we become stressed and angry. The end result is, once again, fear. To turn this fear into joy, or at least not let it overtake, you can channel stress and anger into compassion and sadness, which are two much more productive feelings .

Lesson 3: Compassion and sadness are channels to let go of the anger and stress that result from suffering.

Whether you’re compassionate with yourself and let yourself off the hook, or someone else holds your hand and tells you that things will be okay, it’s a powerful way of immediately dissolving anger. As for sadness, it is an emotion that allows us to <a href="http://fourminutebooks.com/option-b-summary/">reflect and process bad events </a>, which we can use to then take positive action, for example by honoring the dead and their legacy, living in ways that would make them proud, and helping others do the same.

I know <a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/29496453-the-book-of-joy">The Book Of Joy </a> isn’t the most actionable book in the world, because it’s hard to practice feelings, but I believe it all starts with education. Learn the process of turning suffering into joy, let it sink in, and re-visit it often to become better at it. As these two leaders know: it’s a lifelong procedure, but one well worth pursuing.

Taoism is all about being one with the Tao, the force behind the universe which controls and guides our destiny. By moving in conflict with it, we will only be in a losing battle, preventing us from finding true happiness.

Think of life as a river, and Tao as the current. We will only get exhausted when we swim against it, it will only distract us from things that really matter. In short, stop setting external things as our goal, instead, focus on the internal, as this will prevent us going against the Tao.

Focus inwards

Stay true to your own value, you should not go over your true capacities without a strong foundation to support it. In other words, don't stand on your tiptoes to look taller, you will only fall easier in face of resistance.Do not exagerrate your value and do not boast your achievements, you will only be put in a very vulnerable position - a slave to validation.

Like water, we should be soft and yielding, yet infinite and consistent. After all, mountains can be a water's play toy with time.

Let softness overcome hardness

Like water which carves out mountains through the decades, we should have discipline in doing the small tasks everyday. Because that is the only way we could do to conquer the hardest tasks.

Consistency will overcome any hard undertaking

Only by having the patience in letting the Tao manifest itself, we will find true wealth. We need to move in tune with it. Remember, sometimes doing less is doing more.Because like a watered tree, we need to wait for months to harvest its fruit. We will never get to force it.

Let go and let the Tao manifest itself

Being too hard and brittle will limit your ability to adapt. Imagine, if a rock fell off a cliff, it will shatter. But if water does, it will just find another way to flow.

Be flexible

Focus and experience the present, lay down your hands for a while and flow with the current of life so you can see what Tao has for you.
