Vision holders

Vision holders

Building a profitable and purposeful creative business can feel like an uphill struggle. However, it can also be a joy to be supported by peers, professionals and community members as you navigate unchartered territory.

We all need people who can see our vision and are willing to hold space for it when we make mistakes. You need big-hearted, big thinking, action takers to help articulate your vision and keep you accountable to making progress towards it.

Be willing to share your vision

Seemingly ordinary people can ignore critics and achieve great things because they're willing to share their audacious visions even if they may be mocked for it.

  • Walt Disney was fired from the Kansas City Star because he "lacked imagination and had no good ideas."
  • Lady Gaga was dropped three months after signing a major record label.
  • Vincent van Gogh sold only one painting during his lifetime, and that to a friend.

Action step: Articulate your vision. Draw it, write it down. Get your ideas into the world.

Commit to consistent, imperfect action

Commit to action. It could be writing 1,000 words a day or making a drawing a day for 100 days to explore a theme or idea. Whatever your vision, it will only materialise if you take consistent action.

Action steps:

  • List all the actions/behaviours that stop you from moving your vision forward.
  • List all the actions/behaviours you'd need to make progress.
  • Choose a daily action you will commit for the next three months or year.
  • Rinse and repeat.

Share your progress

Repeated exposure can help to improve your skills. For example, making a consistent blog post can help you share your expertise with the creative community and propel you towards your vision.

Action step:

  • Decide when and how often you will share your progress and commit to it.
  • Don't worry about missing the mark now and then. Keep on putting yourself out there.

Join people who are doing great things

Find groups of people who are in a similar stage as you and join them.

Action steps:

  • Determine who is on the same level or a few steps ahead of you and where they're hanging out. Expect that those places will not be free Facebook groups or spaces.
  • Create a business growth budget. When we invest in ourselves, we're more likely to show up for it.
