Dear Polly, I love your column and your book, How to Be a Person in the World. I'm not the best at putting what's in my heart into words, but I've been feeling something bubbling up inside me and I hope you can give me some advice.
The gist: Before you give someone advice, help them remember their core values. This activates the part of the brain that will encourage them to accept your advice. I'm going to give you some good advice but, first, I need you to do something important.
Now, is that because I was on a deadline and worked like an insane person? Did I shove Adderall up my ass and work in 36-hour spurts or something? No, in fact, those last three months, I worked less each day than I did the first 12, yet I still accomplished far more.
