About Ego Is the Enemy Book
The instant Wall Street Journal, USA Today, and international bestseller
“While the history books are filled with tales of obsessive visionary geniuses who remade the world in their image with sheer, almost irrational force, I’ve found that history is also made by individuals who fought their egos at every turn, who eschewed the spotlight, and who put their higher goals above their desire for recognition.” —from the prologue
Many of us insist the main impediment to a full, successful life is the outside world. In fact, the most common enemy lies within: our ego. Early in our careers, it impedes learning and the cultivation of talent. With success, it can blind us to our faults and sow future problems. In failure, it magnifies each blow and makes recovery more difficult. At every stage, ego holds us back.
Ego Is the Enemy draws on a vast array of stories and examples, from literature to philosophy to history. We meet fascinating figures such as George Marshall, Jackie Robinson, Katharine Graham, Bill Belichick, and Eleanor Roosevelt, who all reached the highest levels of power and success by conquering their own egos. Their strategies and tactics can be ours as well.
In an era that glorifies social media, reality TV, and other forms of shameless self-promotion, the battle against ego must be fought on many fronts. Armed with the lessons in this book, as Holiday writes, “you will be less invested in the story you tell about your own specialness, and as a result, you will be liberated to accomplish the world-changing work you’ve set out to achieve.”

Ego can be defined as the sense of superiority and certainty that exceeds the bounds of confidence and talent. It's when the notion of ourselves and the world grows so inflated that it begins to distort the reality that surrounds us.

At any given time in life, people find themselves at one of three stages.
Ego is the enemy every step along this way.

When we are striving for something it's a temptation that exists for everyone - for talk and hype to replace action. At the beginning of any path, we are excited and nervous. So we seek to comfort ourselves externally instead of inwardly. This side we call ego.

“The ego we see most commonly goes by a more casual definition: an unhealthy belief in our own importance. Arrogance. Self-centered ambition.”

💡At any given time in life, we’re aspiring to something, we have achieved success, or we have failed.
💡We must cultivate humility, diligence, and self-awareness if we are to remove ego.
💡Maintain your own scorecard.
💡Don’t fake it ’til you make it—make it.
💡Always stay a student.

The book is structured as short essays split into three parts: Aspire, Success, and Failure. These being three phases that one invariably finds themselves in at any given moment, often alternating between them over the course of a life. As the book says, “Aspiration leads to success (and adversity). Success creates its own adversity (and, hopefully, new ambitions). And adversity leads to aspiration and more success. It’s an endless loop.”

Think of yourself like many of the ancient Stoics did: An eternal student of life, dedicated to learning as long as you live. This keeps you humble and encourages you to learn from the best in your field.
However, it pays to look both up and down the chain: take some time to mentor and teach others. Going back to beginners and helping them exposes you to the full spectrum of skill levels and is another way to restrain your ego.

“It is impossible for a man to learn that, which he thinks he already knows.”

Trust increases the speed of everything in a business, the more employees trust one another, the faster things get done. Delegating some of your work to others forces you to do two things:
These aren’t just ways to win against your ego, but can also be the difference between a thriving company and one that goes bust.

Ryan Holiday uses a lot of historical examples and practical advice to illustrate his points in this book. The book serves as a guide for individuals at all stages of their careers to achieve their full potential by overcoming the enemy within—their own ego.
"Impressing people is utterly different from being truly impressive."

A primary barrier to personal and professional growth.
Ego can cloud our judgment, make us overestimate our abilities, and prevent us from learning and growing. It can lead to arrogance and a false sense of superiority.
73
How excessive ego can sabotage our aspirations, successes, and reactions to failure, and teaches that taming it allows us to grow in humility and perseverance.

Some of my main takeaways from Ego Is the Enemy
These are a few snippets from ego is the enemy which got me thinking and writing. These were useful and actionable for me so will also likely be useful to others who share similar interests. I will first write out the quote in plain unedited format for those who don't care about what I have to say, but will add my own understanding in an idea below for those who would like to hear my view. enjoy

"What is rare is not raw talent, skill, or even confidence, but humility, diligence, and self-awareness."

What I took from this was the realisation that my priorities were not straight because I was focussing too much on improving my so called "skills". This is not necessarily a bad thing, but while doing so I was not thinking at all about improving the traits that lead to being a person who actually can improve and grow. Having traits like Ryan mentioned (Humility, self awareness, etc...) are more important then just trying to improve in one specific area because these are traits that actually allow you to be a good learner and have the ability to grow and improve

"As we first succeed, we will find ourselves in new situations, facing new problems."
39
"self-confidence becomes arrogance, assertiveness becomes obstinacy, and self-assurance becomes reckless abandon."

"Most successful people are people you've never heard of. They want it that way. It keeps them sober. It helps them do their jobs."

Quotes from "Ego is the Enemy" by Ryan Holiday
Most successful people are people you've never heard of. They want it that way. It keeps them sober. It helps them do their jobs.

Whether what you're going through is your fault or your problem doesn't matter, because it's yours to deal with right now.

Greatness comes from humble beginnings; it comes from grunt work. It means you're the least important person in the room-until you change that with results.

This resonated with me because it effectively explains important philosophical concepts that many of us could benefit from applying to our lives.
This explores the counterintuitive idea that true success often comes from a place of humility, not ego. It explains how excessive self-focus can blind us to our weaknesses and hinder our growth, while humility allows us to learn from mistakes, embrace feedback, and ultimately achieve more.
52
We all have an inner voice that can be critical and self-doubting. This summary explains how this "ego" can sabotage our efforts and hold us back. It provides strategies for recognizing and managing this inner critic, allowing us to focus on our goals with confidence and resilience.
47
Our ego can drive us to seek validation and praise, often at the expense of genuine fulfillment. It explains how shifting our focus from pride to purpose—from seeking external approval to pursuing meaningful goals—can lead to greater satisfaction and lasting success.

Ego is the Enemy itu buku yang ditulis sama Ryan Holiday. Long short story awalnya aku sendiri tertarik baca buku ini karna penulisnya. Holiday sering bulak-balik di feed @dialystoic , Holiday salah satu narasumber dan praktisi di akun itu.
Setelah tahu dia nulis buku juga pikiranku langsung kebayang pasti bakal menyinggung tentang stokisme juga. SO HERE WE GO.

So think it twice, are we still need ego to be successful? Are we still need ego to maintain our succeed?
