Instead of telling them to change their behaviour, it's much easier to get them to motivate themselves to change.

Redirect the conversation. When they start to talk about themselves, say that you are very interested and that you know they really like to talk about it. Then change the topic. Ask if you can talk about this other thing.

After you've done this a few times, they'll start to realise when they're doing it and might motivate their own change.
