<ul><li>At the top of the Hourglass, begin by noting the flash response you initially had to the request: Yes or no? Write down whatever you felt like saying in the moment.</li><li>Next is the critical consideration phase, in which you pause to examine three things: Your motives, your history, and your future.</li><li>Ask yourself if you are enthusiastically accepting an opportunity you want or, conversely, people-pleasing, operating on fear or kissing up. In today’s topsy-turvy job market, a strange new thing is happening. Employers are increasingly grumbling about job seekers “ghosting” them. These job candidates just don’t show up for their scheduled interviews. And in some cases, new hires accept a job only to disappear.

Employers, unsurprisingly, do not like this. It’s rude, they say, and unprofessional. And sure, it is. But employers have been doing this to workers for years, and their hand-wringing didn’t start until the tables were turned.

If employers wanted to be treated better, they shouldn’t have spent the last three decades treating candidates with such little humanity. You can’t treat an entire class of people like crap for decades, strip them of rights and protections, and then be upset when we don’t show enough deference to the people asking us to beg for work.

Honestly I LOVE seeing potential employees treating employers the way employers have been treating their candidates for years! And then seeing the employers get all upset about it like they haven’t been behaving exactly the same way. … I really really hope that employers learn a lesson from this and start respecting job seekers a little more (although I’m not optimistic).

It remains to be seen how long these market conditions will last. But if getting ghosted helps employers better understand what they’ve been doing to job seekers for years, that’s a good thing. And if it reflects a real shift in power toward workers, that’s even better.

My typical WFH day looks something like this: 7.30am: wake up, breakfast and shower.8.30am: get to desk and start reading and replying to urgent emails.9am: turn on Slack and catch up with our remote team. Throughout the morning there may be group meetings or 1:1s with various members of our team, along with customer help for me to get on board with. I usually do this until 1pm when I cook my own lunch.

What does a typical day look like for you now?

From a work setting, my work schedule hasn’t changed too much apart from now that I have my wife working out of the living room so I get to hang out with her throughout the day. However, from a life perspective, my usual end-of-day workout has been replaced with a solo run. The days have started blending into one too, I have no idea if it’s Wednesday or Sunday anymore!

How has Coronavirus impacted your life/work?

I’m not going to recommend any particular books here and use this as an opportunity to say what is happening right now isn’t a normal situation. This isn’t what general work from home life is like. We aren’t usually isolated to this degree and yes it is harder to work when you read the news continually. So my advice is read books that will make you feel comfortable and let you have some escapism for a few hours. Read books you’ve read before that you love.

What books would you recommend during this time at home?

I hope that more companies realize that they can hire people from outside their city, outside their country and outside their time zones. Working from home isn’t for everyone but by choosing to force people into one location in one city means that you’re missing out on a wealth of talent who are very comfortable with the WFH lifestyle.
