If we really want to understand artificial intelligence’s power, promise, and peril, we first need to understand the difference between intelligence as it is generally understood and the kind of intelligence we are building now with AI. That is important, because the kind we are building now is really the only kind we know how to build at all — and it is nothing like our own intelligence.

The Intelligence We Build

Despite significant progress in artificial intelligence (AI) research and development, there remains a gap between the potential of AI and the reality of what has been delivered.
While early AI researchers sought to emulate human thinking, modern AI is based on machine learning, which uses statistical methods to build associations from data.
Nonetheless, the recent combination of powerful computing and algorithmic advances has led to breakthroughs in natural language recognition, such as ChatGPT, and renewed optimism about the potential of AI.

The gap in AI delivery

Through much of the field’s early years, AI researchers tried to understand how thinking happened in humans, then use this understanding to emulate it in machines. This meant exploring how the human mind reasons or builds abstractions from its experience of the world. An important focus was natural language recognition, meaning the ability for a computer to understand words and their combinations (syntax, grammar, and meaning), allowing them to interact naturally with humans.

A Computer That Could Talk Like A Human

Over the years, AI went through cycles of optimism and pessimism — these have been called AI “summers” and “winters” — as remarkable periods of progress stalled out for a decade or more. Now we are clearly in an AI summer. A combination of mind-boggling computing power and algorithmic advances combined to bring us a tool like ChatGPT. But if we look back, we can see a considerable gap between what many hoped AI would mean and the kind of artificial intelligence that has been delivered. The mighty ChatGPT, some argue, is nothing but “autocomplete on steroids”.

The Gap In AI Delivery

Modern versions of AI are based on what is called machine learning. These are algorithms that use sophisticated statistical methods to build associations based on some training set of data fed to them by humans. If you have ever solved one of those reCAPTCHA “find the crosswalk” tests, you have helped create and train some machine learning program. Machine learning sometimes involves deep learning, where algorithms represent stacked layers of networks, each one working on a different aspect of building the associations.

Algorithms, Statistics And Data

Machine learning is a remarkable achievement in computer science, but it relies on statistical models that use enormous amounts of data to find patterns and make predictions.
While machines have become increasingly proficient at these tasks, they lack the complexity and nuance of human intelligence. Thus, while we should celebrate the accomplishments of AI, we should also acknowledge its limitations and recognize that true machine intelligence may remain beyond our reach for some time.

The Limits of Machine Intelligence

In this way our AI wonder-machines are really prediction machines whose prowess comes out of the statistics gleaned from the training sets. (While this is oversimplifying the wide range of machine learning algorithms, the gist here is correct.) This view does not diminish in any way the achievements of the AI community, but it underscores how little this kind of intelligence (if it should be called such) resembles our intelligence.

The Artificial Intelligence: Prediction 

Human minds are so much more than prediction machines. What really makes human beings so potent is our ability to discern causes. We do not just apply past circumstances to our current circumstance — we can reason about the causes that lay behind the past circumstance and generalize it to any new situation. It is this flexibility that makes our intelligence “general” and leaves the prediction machines of machine learning looking like they are narrowly focused, brittle, and prone to dangerous mistakes.

The Real Intelligence: General Intelligence

One of the most interesting aspects of machine learning is how opaque it can be. Often it is not clear at all why the algorithms make the decisions they do, even if those decisions turn out to solve the problems the machines were tasked with. This occurs because machine learning methods rely on blind explorations of the statistical distinctions between, say, useful email and spam that live in some vast database of emails. But the kind of reasoning we use to solve a problem usually involves a logic of association that can be clearly explained. Human reasoning is never blind.

Intelligence Is Not Opaque

That difference is the difference that matters. Early AI researchers hoped to build machines that emulated the human mind. They hoped to build machines that thought like people. That is not what happened. Instead, we have learned to build machines that don’t really reason at all. They associate, and that is very different. That difference is why approaches rooted in machine learning never produce the kind of General Artificial Intelligence the founders of the field were hoping for.

Reasoning And Associating: Not The Same Thing At All

That difference may also be why the greatest danger from AI won’t be a machine that wakes up, becomes self-conscious, and then decides to enslave us. Instead, by misidentifying what we have built as actual intelligence, we pose the real danger to ourselves. By building these systems into our society in ways we cannot escape, we may force ourselves to conform to what they can do, rather than discover what we are capable of.

Machine learning is coming of age, and it is a remarkable and even beautiful thing. But we should not mistake it for intelligence, lest we fail to understand our own.

In 1968, George Land took a test he’d developed for the NASA, aimed at determining how creative people are and <a href="http://www.creativityatwork.com/2012/03/23/can-creativity-be-taught/">decided to give it to children </a>. It worked so flawlessly, that he thought even children could do it. He was right. And they passed with flying colors. Among 1,600 kids, who were all five years old at the time, creativity was sky-high. 98% of them were ranked on the far creative end of the spectrum.

Lesson 1: Kid’s wishes will get you right to the intersection of creativity and rationality.

To see how their creativity developed over time, he decided to let the same children go through that test again five years later. By the time they were ten, only 30% remained creative – that’s a steep drop with 2 out of 3 kids losing their creativity. As you can almost imagine, it only gets worse from there. At 15 years old, only 12% were still creative. And if you give the test to adults…well…you get the flip side of the five-year-olds: only 2% are creative .

Clearly, it seems like a good idea to bring back your inner child to light the creative candle again! And in fact, it works: Think of the things you wished you could do as a child . Chances are, a few of these dreams have been developed already, but there are probably plenty left to still create. For example, if you wanted to fly, well, we have airplanes now. And if you want to travel to a whole other world, virtual reality is slowly making its debut.

All of these things started as crazy childhood dreams – but once rational adult brains started tackling them, they became a reality.

What if I told you you had to come up with a crazy new innovation in the next 30 seconds? You’d probably panic and freeze right up, wouldn’t you? Alright, alright, here’s a little help: You can combine two random words, a noun and an adjective, before starting to think about your idea . This is what Bryan Mattimore calls the “and” technique, and it’s simply meant to get your brain to think in new ways.

Lesson 2: Come up with ideas in 30 seconds flat by using the “and” technique.

If you write nouns on a pile of cards and adjectives on another, then draw one from each pile, new ideas will quickly fall into place. For example, what would you do with cards that read “garden” and “loud?” Maybe you’d start thinking about how you can build a music box that covers your whole backyard with its echo when you have a party. Or how you can muffle the sound of your lawnmower to make it less annoying for your neighbors. See, that’s two already!

Of course this doesn’t just work for totally new ideas – you can just as well use it to come up with a big idea in a specific industry. Just fix the noun in place, for example “flowers,” “online,” “fashion,” or “pizza,” and then try 20-30 different adjectives. You’ll quickly have a whole bunch of new <a href="http://fourminutebooks.com/one-simple-idea-summary/">ideas </a>!

But not all ideas are sustainable. To find out which ones are, you obviously have to <a href="http://fourminutebooks.com/will-it-fly-summary/">get feedback from the real world </a>. Before you do so, however, it helps to come up with a snappy way of sharing your idea, so you don’t end up giving a 30-minute talk to each prospect.

Lesson 3: Find suitable business ideas with billboarding.

This is where billboarding comes in. It works in three steps: <ol><li>Come up with a snappy name for your product, by clearly defining what your idea is and which problem it solves for your customers. </li><li>List all of your products benefits . </li><li>Take the strongest of all the plus points and use it to create a slogan . </li> </ol>

For example, in case of the lawnmower muffler above, you could call it “Silawn,” “MuteMower,” or “MuffleMower,” to make it instantly clear that it’ll make mowing your lawn a quiet practice. In addition, if you make your slogan “Never fight with your neighbors, ever again!” you’re sure to let people know this’ll take care of a potentially heated topic in advance. Pretty cool, huh?

Again, I’m not on the “low-on-ideas” side, but still, I liked how simple this book made the entire process, especially for teams or larger groups of people. Also, brainstorming with the real world in mind, like during billboarding, instantly makes your ideas more actionable. <a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/27037565-21-days-to-a-big-idea">21 Days To A Big Idea </a> is a good read.

Some books just strike exactly the right nerve at exactly the right time. <a href="http://konmari.com/about/">Marie Kondo </a>‘s surely did. Published in late 2014, <a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/22318578-the-life-changing-magic-of-tidying-up">The Life-Changing Magic Of Tidying Up </a> has already sold 6 million (!) copies worldwide. Using a single question as the center of her tidying process (“Does this spark joy?”), she’s swept the world off its feet and the clutter out of our homes.

I already <a href="http://niklasgoeke.com/selling-issues/">discovered the power of decluttering in 2013 </a>, and in hindsight, I can agree with a lot of what Konmari (her nickname) says. Tidying up isn’t just about being a neat freak. It’s much more than that. It’s a spiritual experience, and you’re not just cleaning your house, your mind and body detox right with it.

What decluttering comes down to is examining your relationship with each and every single item in your home. Each relationship is different. Your history with your coffee maker has begun at a different point in time than your relationship with that postcard a friend sent you, and so on.

Lesson 1: Go from easy items to more difficult ones when figuring out what to keep.

Do you know how thinking of some people instantly reminds you of the happy and exciting times you shared together? Possessions are the same, which makes <a href="https://fourminutebooks.com/minimalism-summary/">some more worth keeping than others </a>.

However, some relationships with things are more complicated than others. That’s why it’s best to start with easier categories of more functional items, like clothes, books, technology, documents, and other miscellaneous items. Most of these serve a clear purpose and don’t hold as many complex memories as your more sentimental items.

Save photos and memorabilia for the very end, because by then you’ll already be in decluttering mode and figure out what to do with these special memories a lot faster. Keep those where you distinctly remember creating or getting them – those are your longest lasting memories, which you can re-live over and over, and gratefully let go of the rest.

Most people don’t even get started on decluttering, simply because they think it’s a lifetime job. That couldn’t be further from the truth. Marie Kondo says you only have to tidy up once – if you do it right – to leave a lasting impact on your life. It takes her around six hours on average to clean a client’s house, and she’s a pro, so you should probably take a weekend to give yourself enough time. In fact, if you make it a special event, tidying up goes from tedious task to fun and life-changing experience.

Lesson 2: YODO – you only declutter once (if you do it right).

Once you’ve thrown a thorough cleaning party, you’ll not only have the biggest part behind you, but also emerge with a new mindset . Chances are, you’ll buy a lot less in the future, to keep your space neat and clean, which makes future clean ups simple and easy.

For example, I <a href="http://niklasgoeke.com/minimal-wardrobe/">threw out 75% of my clothes </a>, all of my video games, DVDs and BluRays, some of my books and most of my old school supplies and notes in 2013. I felt so free afterward that the last thing I wanted was to fill up all those empty shelves again with the same clutter, so I’ve never had to do another big clean out since then. Now it’s mostly just tossing an item here and there, while my space remains forever organized 🙂

But how the hell do you even decide what to keep and what to toss? This is where most people overcomplicate things, but not you. Not after you’ve read this, anyway. Konmari suggestsa few simple questions which you can use, moving from a rational to a more emotional approach, depending on the item and the complexity of the relationship you have with it.

Lesson 3: Don’t overcomplicate tidying up, just use a few simple questions.

Start with these: <ul><li>What is the purpose of this object? </li><li>Has it fulfilled its purpose already? </li><li>Why did I get this thing? </li><li>When did I get it? </li><li>How did it land in my house? </li> </ul>

For example, a DVD that’s still in its packaging has likely not fulfilled its purpose yet, but if it’s been sitting on your shelf for a year, chances are it’ll be better off in someone else’s hands. But, for some things, <a href="https://fourminutebooks.com/thinking-fast-and-slow-summary/">rational reasoning </a>won’t win over <a href="https://fourminutebooks.com/pitch-anything-summary/">your powerful gut reaction </a>to keep them. When you find you’re emotionally attached to an item, switch to examining how it contributes to your happiness:

Steal Like an Artist

This approach to note-taking was inspired by the 20th-century German sociologist Niklas Luhmann who was a prolific note-taker, writer, and academic. He developed a simple system based on paper index cards, which he called his “slip-box”, designed to connect any given note to as many different potentially relevant contexts as possible. It enables the note-taker to break down their notes into smaller, manageable chunks and organize them into a cohesive whole. This process allows the note-taker to gain a better understanding of their notes and to utilize them in further research and writing.

8 Steps to taking smart notes

Fleeting notes are quick, informal notes on any thought or idea that pops into your mind meant to be a reminder of what’s in your head.

1.Fleeting Notes.

Literature Notes are meant to be incorporated in one’s own writing.Guidelines in creating literature notes:<ul><li>Be extremely selective in what you decide to keep</li><li>Keep the overall note as short as possible</li><li>Use your own words, instead of copying quotes verbatim</li><li>Write down the bibliographic details on the source</li></ul>

2. Make Literature notes.

These notes are based on reviewing the fleeting notes and literature notes and relates to your current work on or interests. The purpose is not just to collect ideas, but to develop arguments and discussions over time.Questions to ask yourself to create them: <ul><li>How does the new information contradict, correct, support, or add to what I already know?</li><li>How can I combine ideas to generate something new?</li><li>What questions are triggered by these new ideas?</li></ul>Once done, throw away the fleeting notes from step one and file the literature notes from step two into your bibliographic slip-box.

3. Make permanent notes.

Add the permanent notes you’ve created to your slip-box. Do this by filing each note behind a related note (if it doesn’t relate to any existing notes, add it to the very end).

4. Addition your new permanent notes to the slip-box. 

With so many standardized notes organized in a consistent format, you are now free to develop ideas in a “bottom up” way. See what is there, what is missing, and which questions arise. Look for gaps that you can fill through further reading.

5. Develop your topics, questions and research projects bottom up from within the slip-box.

Instead of coming up with a topic upfront, you can just look into your slip-box and look for what is most interesting. Your writing will be based on what you already have, not on an unfounded guess about what the literature you are about to read might contain. Follow the connections between notes and collect all the relevant notes on the topic you’ve found.

6. Decide on a topic to write about from within the slip-box.

Instead of copying your notes into a manuscript, translate them into something coherent and embed them into the context of your argument. As you detect holes in your argument, fill them or change the argument.

7. Turn your notes into a rough draft. 

From this point forward, all you have to do is refine your rough draft until it’s ready to be published.

8. Edit and proofread your manuscript. 

Note-taking is like time travel—you are sending packets of knowledge through time to your future self.
