Our brain uses shortcuts (called heuristics) to make decisions quickly, but sometimes these shortcuts lead to mistakes or biases. For example, we might base a decision on a recent memory rather than facts.

"The greatest mistake you can make in life is to be continually fearing you will make one."

People hate losing more than they enjoy winning. This is why we sometimes avoid risks, even when the possible reward is bigger than the risk itself.

"We can only see what we are prepared to see."

We rely too much on the first piece of information we hear (the "anchor"). For example, hearing a price first affects how you judge other prices, even if it’s unrelated.

4. Anchoring Effect

"The most common way people give up their power is by thinking they don’t have any."

We judge how likely something is based on how easily we remember examples. For example, after hearing about a plane crash on the news, you might fear flying even though it's very safe.

5. Availability Heuristic

"The greatest enemy of knowledge is not ignorance, it is the illusion of knowledge."

We often think we know more than we really do. Being aware of this can help us make better decisions and stay humble in what we assume.

6. Overconfidence Bias

"Prejudice is a great time-saver. You can form opinions without having to get the facts."

If we like one thing about a person, we tend to assume other positive things about them, too. For example, if someone is friendly, we might also think they’re smart, even without knowing for sure.

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) came into being after the merger of the National Data Bank (NDB) and the Federal Office of Statistics (FOS). Initially, FOS was the major government agency tasked with collecting and analyzing statistical data in the country, while NDB was another agency focused on the storage and maintenance of statistical data in the Federal Republic of Nigeria. This merger highlights the actualization of part of the Statistical Master Plan (SMP), a programme document put forward by the Government of Nigeria.

The NBS is responsible for the coordination of the National Statistical System (NSS), incorporating all statistical operations across all levels of government — federal, state, and local. It collects and disseminates official statistics from Federal Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDA), State Statistical Agencies (SSAs), and Local Government Councils (LGCs).

National Coordination

The NBS serves as the apex body for the collection and dissemination of official statistics, including data on population, demography, economic events, agriculture, and national resources. Its establishment as the leading authority for information collection and dissemination ensures coherence in the system, which is essential for governance and planning

Apex Statistical Authority

Nigeria practices a federal system consisting of 36 states, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and 774 Local Government Areas (LGAs). The statistical efforts at each level are coordinated by the NBS. Ministries or government departments have Directors of Statistics, and similarly, each state has its own Director of Statistics, along with Heads of Statistics units at the LGA level, ensuring widespread data collection.

National Structure

The Statistics Act of 2007, passed by the parliament, provides a legal framework for the NBS, covering its activities and mandate. This Act was passed to support the collection, management, and dissemination of national statistics. State offices for the NBS are located in all 36 states of Nigeria, plus the Federal Capital Territory. Zonal offices are located in the six geopolitical zones: Southeast – Enugu State Southsouth – Calabar Southwest – Ibadan Northwest – Kaduna Northeast – Maiduguri Northcentral – Jos
