Much of the books, articles, productivity tools, and productivity apps you see these days are all in a way influenced by Drucker. For instance, the term “deep work” (coined by Cal Newport) is currently very popular. But if you read The Effective Executive, which is written in 1967, Drucker talks about the same concept.

“Do you know thy time?”If you don’t measure your time, it’s tough to stop procrastination or improve your productivity. Because if you want to manage your time better, you have to know where it goes first.How do you know your time? Keep an activity log - the specific method you use doesn’t matter. The only thing that matters is that you want to keep a record for at least two weeks. Preferably, you want a whole month of recorded activities.

Step 1: Know thy time

“Go through all the recurring activities in your log one by one. What would happen if you would stop doing them?” If the answer is: “All hell breaks loose.” Don’t change anything.But if your answer is: “Nothing would happen.” You’ve hit gold. We all do activities that have ZERO return. I call those activities time-wasters.

Step 2: Identify the non-productive work

Know where your time goes. Identify the critical tasks from the trivial tasks in your life. And cut the trivial, time-wasting, tasks.If you want to be a super-effective person, you regularly keep a log. You don’t have to keep a log for 365 days a year. Instead, do two stretches of two-three weeks a year. That’s enough to keep track of your time and identify new time-wasterit forces you to think about your daily routine.

Batching can be explained best when talking about laundry.  You won't do your laundry when you have one pair of dirty socks. You would wait for a certain critical mass of dirty laundry before doing the laundry. The time and labour involved in doing one pair of socks or an entire basket are the same. You want to be effective and efficient with your allocation of resources in many different ways.

Frequency is personal.  You may be batching daily, weekly, monthly or quarterly. Experiment and see what works. Sleep procrastination—also known as bedtime procrastination—is exactly what it sounds like: the decision to put off going to bed when there's no external reason to. (When we say external reason, we mean injuries, illnesses, and emergencies that might keep you up later than intended.)Sleep procrastination can take the form of a few minutes or several hours. And while these isolated incidents may leave you feeling tired the next day, over time, they can contribute to sleep deprivation.

Most of us understand the value of a good night's sleep. Sleep supports everything from physical health to proper brain function. And it can help us boost our immune systems, reduce our risk of certain chronic health problems, and otherwise keep ourselves in tip-top shape.Many of us want to get the CDC's recommended seven hours of sleep each night. The problem is that temptations like Instagram and Netflix keep us from pulling it off!

Sleep Is Important, But So Are Other Temptations

The easiest way to ensure you get enough sleep each night? Have a set bedtime and a set wake-up time that you stick to. If specific times feel too rigid, you could always give yourself a bedtime and wake-up window. It is very important to keep a consistent sleep schedule.Of course, it is nearly impossible to go to sleep at the same exact time each night. But keeping within a one- to two-hour window for both going to sleep and waking up is the most effective. Just be sure not to use the flexibility as an excuse to indulge in some sleep procrastination.

How to Stop Procrastinating and (finally) Go to Sleep: The Routine

If you already have a set sleep routine, figure out what's keeping you from it. What is it that's keeping you up at night? Is it work, TV, conversations with friends—or something else entirely? Once you understand what the problem-causers are, you can build boundaries around them.

Many of us know that <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/niosh/emres/longhourstraining/color.html">the blue light emitted from our devices</a> can disrupt our Circadian rhythms, affecting our ability to fall and stay asleep. But screen time may be affecting your sleep schedule in other ways, too. The activity you're procrastinating sleep for could be an app on your phone, a show on your TV, or even work on your computer, so consider setting boundaries around screen time. Rohrscheib recommends ending screen time at least one hour before bedtime, and Avena recommends keeping electronics out of the bedroom entirely.

So here are five actions you should take before any 30-day writing challenge.

“By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail,” said Benjamin Franklin.And although many creators sustain that overpreparation ruins their creativity, it is also true that not preparing makes you create poor content.So before starting your 30-day writing challenge, select from one to three projects you want to work on, and focus only on those.

1 — Select the writing projects you want to focus on.

Any challenge should have clear and measurable requirements. Otherwise, they would have called it things people do when bored.Therefore, since it is a dare with yourself to enhance your productivity for a limited amount of time, pick a demanding daily requirement.For example, if you used to write 500 words per day, make it 1000. Which doesn’t mean you have to double your productivity, but at least push it hard enough to make a difference.

2 — Pick a daily requirement.

3 — Mark every planned commitment.Sometimes, I would like to stop time, produce as much as possible, and restart it. So I would never need to give up anything.But we all have a social life, and finding 30 straight days without any planned commitments is impossible. No matter which period you pick, a friend will have a party, or a relative may celebrate his birthday, and you can’t skip it (as much as you may want to).So when you plan your 30-day writing challenge, consider that these activities may take you more time than expected. And if you go to a night party, you can’t wake up early the day<warningtag> after to work on your challenge.</warningtag>

3 — Mark every planned commitment.

Now that you selected your working projects and minimum requirement, you can distribute tasks based on your commitments.With a requirement of 1500 words per day, for example, you can write 1000 for articles and 500 for social media. Or you could focus only on one project and switch to one of the others the next day.To give you an idea, in March 2022, I also made a challenge. But after a while, your productivity will drop, and you will fatigue to reach the threshold every day.For this reason, you can plan a few buffering days to help you recover from productivity slumps. In those days, you don’t have any requirements. And if you wrote enough in the previous days, you can take a day off. But if you didn’t, you need to recover.

Once you understand how to set up a 30-days writing challenge, you may want to draw your own. It is easier to follow if you don’t have any other commitments. So to align with their duties, this plan puts a buffering day each Sunday when you have more time to recover.</li></ul>

At its core, the 12WY is a planning strategy.
