A fine line between PREPARATION and PROCRASTINATION

“It takes a long time to feel ready. Everyone thinks it’s an overnight thing, but when you start out, it’s really hard.”

Yes, getting ready is comfortable. But most successful people report feeling uncomfortable when they first got started. Many still feel uncomfortable—or, in the words of Larry Page, “uncomfortably excited”—many years after they achieved what many would consider as huge successes.

Instead of preparing and researching, start before you feel ready. Pick a first step and just do it. Repeat that step until you feel comfortable enough, then kick it up a notch. When you look back, you won’t believe how much progress you’ve made.

How To Manage Time As A Student 

Cramming sis terribly inefficient; four hours of cramming is worse than four hours of study spread out over several weeks or months. This is how memory works in general; we want information to stay in our long-term memory since retrieving it will be much simpler than if we store it in our short term memory

#9 Avoid 'cramming'

how to prepare well for exams or in general learn effectively is something nobody teaches us in school or university. Try tactics such as Active Recall and spaced repetition. These tactics can effectively free up a large amount of your time.

#8 Learn How To Study Effectively 

There is a belief that because studying is so difficult and stressful, you think you need three hours each night to unwind and that time must be spent watching TV and browsing Instagram because that is what you count as your "Self care time." This belief is valid, but it's also acceptable to experiment a little and to raise doubts about your beliefs regarding how much quick self-care you actually require. What i am trying to say in short is try spending 30 minutes less on your self care time and you'll see a difference.

How would you prefer to spend your time if you could design your life anyway you wanted, and then compare that to how you're really spending your time right now. Then ask yourself why your present life isn't like that and what techniques you might take to move your current life closer to your ideal li

#6 Work Out Your Ideal Ordinary Week

Revision schedules are a complete fiction, they're a terrible waste of time, they're simply a method for us to postpone and procrastinate, they're a way for us to feel good about the fact that we're intending to do all this revision but then when we get down to it, we don't actually follow the revision timetable. Unless you're one of the rare diligent students who adheres to a revision schedule, in which case you probably wouldn't be reading this idea on time management.

#5 Scrap Revision Timetables 

I discovered that anytime I remained up until 2 a.m. to hang out with friends or do anything relaxing, nothing positive came of it. I believe 2 a.m. is the time at which you realize you've had your profound chats from 10 P.m. to 2 a.m.. Nothing nice happens between the hours of 2 and 6 a.m. It basically means you screwed yourself for the following day because you're now burnt out, fatigued, and exhausted, and you have to go to lectures, where you're falling asleep, and it all becomes a nightmare.

#4 Nothing Good Happens After 2 Am

It's exhausting trying to remember all you need to accomplish. Another advantage of utilizing a calendar is that it allows you to be more thoughtful about how you spend your time. Whether you decide that one of the things you want to accomplish at university is participate in an extra project or whatever, you may look at your schedule and see if you actually have the time to do so. It's so easy to beat ourselves up because we believe we should be doing a hundred other things, but if you run your life on a calendar, and your calendar is somewhat accurate.

#3 Run Your Life Religiously Based On A Calendar 

you can physically see if you have the time to accomplish this. Let's assume I want to do my sports, my socializing, and my self-care, how many hours are legitimately left in the day to do other things, and if you run your life through a calendar, you'll have a good idea of what that is, and if you don't, you can wind up wasting a lot of time and You can also find yourself beating yourself up and flagellating yourself for not doing enough when, in reality, you're accomplishing a lot but aren't aware of it since you don't use a calendar.

When you schedule things, you may start using the time you save to accomplish something deliberate rather than something unintentional. In general, scrolling Instagram or Tiktok is an unintentional way to spend time; it's just one of those things you end up doing because you have like 12 minutes and you're like, well, you can't do any work in 12 minutes so you might as well just scroll Instagram that's not like intentional and the thing I always try to tell myself is time is the only thing we have, time is the only resource we can't make more of.

#2 Schedule Absolutely Everything 

So why am I wasting my time on this world, my valuable time on this earth, doing something I don't honestly want to do, and so what I discovered is that when I arrange things using a calendar and find these tiny blocks of time, I also try not to squander those minutes.

I used to beat myself up when I didn't feel productive enough that day or when I didn't get through the subjects on my crappy revision timetable, and I realized that beating myself up doesn't actually change how much work I've managed to do, it doesn't change anything about how effective my studying was, all it does is make me feel bad for the rest of the evening and make me struggle to sleep, and it doesn't even help me like it doesn't even galvanise my motivation to do more work the next day because it's like every day is an individual day and if I did poorly one day,

People who are time poor are less happy, less productive and more stressed out. They exercise less, eat fattier food and have a higher incidence of cardiovascular disease. Time poverty forces us to compromise. Time poverty doesn’t arise from a mismatch between the hours we have and the hours we need; it results from how we think about and value those hours.

There is an 8 out of 10 chance that you are one of the poorest people in the world: time-poor.

Time confetti: the little bits of seconds and minutes lost to unproductive multitasking. Each bit alone is not very bad, but all add up to something more pernicious.Time confetti fragments an hour of leisure to smaller chunks (5-6 minutes long). It takes time to cognitively recover from shifting our minds from the present to a stress-inducing activity. Time confetti makes us feel even more time impoverished than we actually are.

Money protects against sadness but doesn’t buy joy. Once we make enough money to pay our bills, save for the future and have some fun, making more does little for our happiness.A culture obsessed with making more money believes, wrongly, that the way to become more time affluent is to become financially wealthier. Focusing on chasing wealth leads only to an increased focus on chasing wealth.

Because of a cultural obsession with money, many people protect their money in ways that are counterproductive to time affluence. We reflexively go for the lowest cost when we shouldn’t.Even if we’re making a bad trade-off between time and money — such as driving two miles out of our way to save 10 cents per gallon on gas — it doesn’t feel like a bad choice. That’s because we don’t really know the worth of the time it took.

Time trap #3: We undervalue our time

Our identities are tied to work.Financial insecurity drives workism. Most of us cope by working more and trying to make more money. And we feel guilty about spending money on things that make us happy, such as dining out or vacations.The social appearance of being busy makes us feel good about ourselves. In contrast, focusing our attention on something other than work can threaten our livelihood and status.

Time trap #4: We regard busyness as a status symbol

Being constantly connected to our devices prevents the brain from recovering, keeps our stress levels elevated and takes us out of the present.Idleness has been shown to be a valuable form of leisure and can increase time affluence. The physical and mental benefits of disengaging the brain are far more valuable than the stress created by keeping the mind engaged at all times.

The best predictor of how busy we are going to be next week is how busy we are right now.

Procrastination is one of the main barriers blocking you from getting up, making the right decisions and living the dream life you've thought of.Recent studies have shown that people regret more the things they haven't done than the things they have done. In addition, feelings of regret and guilt resulting from missed opportunities tend to stay with people much longer.

For example, if you want to start exercising, a good goal might be “be able to run a full mile by the end of the month”, while bad goals might be “do some running” (unspecific) and “run a marathon by the end of the month” (unrealistic).

1. Set specific and realistic goals.

First, identify cases in which you delay unnecessarily, to figure out what exactly you procrastinate on (e.g., studying) and how you do it (e.g., by <a href="https://solvingprocrastination.com/social-media-procrastination/">browsing social media</a>). Then, think about those situations to also figure out where and when you procrastinate (e.g., at home or the library, on starting or finishing tasks, in the morning or evening). Finally, figure out why you procrastinate.

2. Assess your procrastination. 

It should involve using relevant anti-procrastination techniques, which account for the goals that you set and the nature of your procrastination problem.

3. Create an action plan.

Make sure to reflect on your progress and refine your approach, primarily by figuring out which techniques work for you and how you can implement them most effectively.

4. Implement your plan. 

identify the smallest possible step you can take to make progress toward your goals, and try to start with just that tiny step, while giving yourself permission to make mistakes during the attempt. For example, if you need to write an essay, you can decide to start by writing just a single word, while accepting that it won’t be perfect, and might even be quite bad at first.

Tips To Manage Time For Students

Jeanne Proust is a postdoctoral teaching fellow at Fordham University.The conception of free will as the continual creation of unpredictable novelty can lead us away from social-media-driven anxieties that often cripple our decision-making.If there’s one thing the pandemic helped me realize, it’s how deeply FOMO was spoiling my life. All of a sudden, plans, gatherings and events I might miss evaporated. It was a huge relief: There I was, liberated, precisely when deprived of choices to make.

Until recently, that is, when a new normal emerged — once again with an arsenal of overwhelming possibilities. Was I to fall back into despair? Or could I try to heal myself from my free will anxieties using philosophical resources I could put into practice? FOMO, to me, is more than jealousy born of social media; I’ve never had a Facebook or Instagram account. I knew those platforms would be the end of me, weaponizing my cynicism and disdain (I am French after all).

To Heal Myself

More broadly and profoundly, I see FOMO as an echo of an existential conundrum related to a deep sense of irresolution in the face of the myriad possible paths our lives can take. It manifests as a form of disquieted paralysis that for me had always been a significant source of suffering, to the point where I wanted to dedicate my Ph.D. thesis to it. My pathological, all-encompassing uncertainty was why I chose to study philosophy in the first place: I simply couldn’t decide on a career. It wasn’t because I wasn’t good at or interested in other subjects.

FOMO as an Echo

But choosing among them felt like a daunting sacrifice. The author André Gide’s famous quote, “choisir, c’est renoncer” (“to choose is to renounce”), became my life’s tragic motto.FOMO seems to have first appeared two decades ago when a marketing strategist named Dan Herman mentioned it in the Journal of Brand Management. But the “<a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6211134/#B8-ijerph-15-02319">pervasive apprehension </a>that others might be having rewarding experiences from which one is absent” is older, a phenomenon fundamental to our human condition.

This condition has been exacerbated by today’s technology-obsessed society. The “infobesity” coming from social media platforms — the proliferation of possibilities, or at least the illusory impression of such an abundance, along with an ungrounded sense of accessibility — feeds an unprecedented awareness of how other people live their lives: what they watch, buy, enjoy, know, experience and share.

I used to be fascinated (and terrified) by Jean-Paul Sartre’s <a href="https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/existentialism/#FreVal">conception of freedom </a> as a burden. I felt squashed by responsibility: What you decide to do will ultimately define who you are. In an existentialist sense, FOMO stems from a conception of freedom involving a plurality of equally possible futures that are all realizable. But this is not the only way to think about it. Luckily, Sartre’s anxiogenic existentialism has comforting competitors.

Back in 2006, as I was about to leave the Humboldt-Universität library, I spotted a worn-out, left-behind little book whose title intrigued me: “The Possible and The Real.” Henri Bergson thus entered my life. And he was going to save me from the pangs and throes of indecision.

I immediately fell in love not only with his very elegant and limpid style (such a relief when I was sweating over Hegel and Heidegger), but also with his understanding of free acts as unfolding creations emerging from the depths of ourselves, yet always unpredictable. Bergson’s conception of freedom can provide a remedy to many deep anxieties pertaining to the fear of missing out. By adopting his understanding of free acts, one can learn how to let go of the misleading metaphor of the “tree of possibles” crippling our decision-making capacities.

For Sartre, freedom transcends who you are: The possibilities you face are ready to impale you with responsibility as soon as you choose to realize them. Bergson’s freedom is immanent: It is grounded in the self, in our character, in our past. Bergson seems to postulate that our “free” actions reflect an essence (the deep self, the past, the personality) of what precedes them. They flow from the most intimate self.

Bergson’s concept of the deep self is nothing like a fixed essence. The self is a process, perpetually maturing, never “essentializable,” never absolutely determined or determining. The qualitative continuity between the self and its free acts is not static: A free act always unfolds, emerges as something perpetually new, though not radically so. Our free decisions are not reducible to the self as it is at a given moment, because when that moment is being conceived it is already past. The self continually grows as it is deciding, as it acts.

Being free is not about having the ability to do anything. It is about embracing the act we are doing as the expression of who we are becoming. We aren’t coerced into doing things by a third party, or by strong and alienating habits that form what Bergson calls our “superficial self.” Most of what we do are reactions, partially automated, adapted to the social and biological demands of daily routine.

By contrast, we act freely when we act upon the continuous, heterogeneous multiplicity of our deep selves, when we are attentive to our most fundamental tendencies, which are perpetually in flux, below the superficial crust of our habitual behavior. “To act freely is to retake possession of oneself,” Bergson wrote. “It is to place oneself back in pure duration.”

Through intuitive thinking and careful and deep introspection, we can break through that crust and birth authentic, free acts. Truly free acts are therefore rare: It is difficult to listen to our inner “duration,” our deep tendencies constantly becoming, permeating one another. It is challenging to put ourselves in tune with our whole moving, growing personality.

Our ordinary conception of free will is that a future scenario presents the same level of possibility as any other, and that we somehow have the ability to choose between them. Bergson thought that was the fruit of a retrospective illusion. “It is the real which makes itself possible, and not the possible which becomes real,” he wrote. It is only when something actually happens, when it becomes real, that it becomes possible: There is no temporal anteriority of the possible before its realization.

At best, we can say that once something has happened, it was possible. We retroactively qualify as possible what is now actualized and real, forgetting that we have to wait until then to call it possible. It’s easy to predict what tomorrow could look like, but products of imagination aren’t the same as seeing the future.

At the end of “The Possible and the Real,” Bergson insists on the benefits of this way of reflecting on our well-being: “In this speculation on the relation between the possible and the real, let us guard against seeing a simple game,” he wrote. “It can be a preparation for the art of living.” We project “possible” futures based on nothing but the past. But the future is fundamentally uncharted. Trying to predict it is a vain endeavor — and so is attempting to imagine what might have happened if different decisions had been made.
