For a long time, many have let those after-hours communications slide but major changes are coming to ensure the grunts of your boss don’t reach your home, well at least not after hours.

Is there a Right to Disconnect?

All around the world, disgruntled employees have made it very clear that they do not wish to receive any work-related communication post-work. Governments are trying to table laws to please the common populace while employers have already either started falling in line or are working around the clock to circumvent the proposed changes by using diverse interpretations of the legal words.How does it concern you?If you are an employee and your workplace values you and your mental wellbeing, they should already have a written policy. Even if you are an employer then the reasons are same.

What's happening?

The new laws/policies, commonly referred to as the Right to Disconnect are been drafted but their implementation has been largely limited to countries in the European Union and a few South American nations. In some countries, especially in Europe, the right to disconnect is somehow incorporated into the law, but it may also be included in the policies of many large corporations. Many countries have tabled and passed bills of similar nature like Chile, Peru, and Canada (Ontario’s Bill 27), whereas others are struggling to pass the draft beyond the committee levels like the City of New York.

What’s happening across the globe?

<ul><li>If companies cannot negotiate an agreement with employees on the use of information and communications technology, they are required to adopt an employer-created “charter”.</li><li>It is not made with the new Hybrid & WFH (work from home) routines and is centred around the traditional workday.</li><li>It can not be applied feasibly to sectors where a routine workday can not be defined like healthcare workers.</li><li>These policies may make employers take a strict line with employees forcing them to take time off to attend to personal matters during work hours and work later without overtime pay.</li></ul>

What is not clear:

<ul><li>The act of contacting an employee in case of emergency can not accurately be defined as to what is considered an emergency and under what context would it be compensated.</li></ul>While the laws are surely a step in the right direction and aspirational, it doesn’t clearly differentiate between different job types, and sectors. It is open to interpretation and the possibility of future amendments. Further research on this ever-changing job market is required to implement future amends and provide employees with a healthy balance so they can exercise their right to rest, and privacy.

How to improve focus and concentration ? 

The second as we know it was one introduced in the late 1500s when the Gregorian calendar began to spread across the globe alongside British colonialism. The Gregorian calendar defined a day as a single revolution of the Earth about its axis. A day could be divided into 24 hours, each hour into 60 minutes, and each minute into 60 seconds. Yet, the second was more a mathematical idea than a useful unit of time.

The history of the second

The second only became important when society became interconnected through fast-moving railways where cities needed to agree on exact timekeeping. By the 1950s, several global systems required every second to be accounted for with as much precision as possible.  Today, devices are synchronised to help us maintain a globally consistent time, from radio signal transmitters to satellites for global positioning systems.

The growing importance of the second

As early as 1955, researchers started to develop atomic clocks, which relied on the laws of physics to establish a new foundation for timekeeping. An atom consists of negatively charged electrons orbiting a positively charged nucleus at a consistent frequency. You can lightly disturb an electron's orientation if you expose an atom to an electromagnetic field such as light or radio waves. If you briefly tweak an electron at the right frequency, the vibration will resemble a ticking pendulum and can tick for centuries.

Atomic clocks

Before timekeeping could go fully atomic, countries had to decide which atom would work best.  At the Thirteenth General Conference of the International Committee for Weights and Measures in 1967, researchers decided on Cesium-133. The element conformed to the following specifications:<ul><li>It had a long-lived and high-frequency electron oscillation for precise, long-term timekeeping.</li><li>It maintained a reliably measurable quantum spin </li><li>It could easily vaporise.</li></ul>

Finding the right element

Determining how many ticks of a caesium atom were in a second, the conference used the most precise astronomical measurement of a second available at the time.  They started with the number of days in a year and divided it down. Compared to the atom’s ticking rate, one second was defined as exactly 9,192,631,770 ticks of a caesium-133 atom.

The third series of the sci-fi drama “For All Mankind” posits an alternative timeline in which humans visit Mars in the 1990s.The show envisions an alternative history where, instead of America landing on the Moon in 1969, the Russians did.This would have led to a fierce acceleration of the Apollo space programme, with America becoming desperate to catch up to and exceed their Cold War rivals.

<ul><li>A manned mission to Mars is a challenge for modern NASA.</li><li>One of the big issues is the distance, along with the level of radiation the astronauts have to face.</li><li>Communication between the ship and Earth would be delayed by 10 minutes each way.</li><li>Around a third of everything that has tried to land on Mars has failed.</li><li>Food and supplies would require future planning. Initially, you would need to send your food and rocket fuel for your return journey in advance. Long-term, you could talk about <a href="https://www.sciencefocus.com/space/turning-the-red-planet-green-how-well-grow-crops-on-mars/">growing things on Mars</a>.</li></ul>

The concept is wonderfully simple: No matter how busy successful people are, they always spend at least an hour a day — or five hours a work week — learning or practicing. And they do this across their entire career.The five-hour can be embraced by breaking the rule into three parts :

Reading can give you a good head start; this is often what your peers cannot obtain. Compared to others, readers are more likely to know other industries' strategies and tactics. Even if you can't commit to an hour or more of reading every day, start with 20 to 30 minutes. You could also try audiobooks during your daily commute or when exercising.

1) Read

The five-hour rule also includes reflecting and thinking. This could be just staring at the wall or jotting down your thoughts. Focusing on the past gives you a chance to learn from mistakes you've made, as well as assess what you did correctly. As a result, you'll be better suited to achieve your goals and improve your life.

2) Reflect

The third and final part is rapid experimentation. We have Gmail because Google allowed employees to experiment with new ideas.The reason experiments are so useful is because you have facts, not assumptions. Experiments show you what's working.By investing in a reading habit, you can ensure you're growing yourself — and your company — every day.

3) Experiment 

A five-year study of more than 200 self-made millionaires found that they don't watch TV. Instead, an impressive 86 percent claimed they read — but not just for fun. What's more, 63 percent indicated they listened to audiobooks during their morning commute. So how do they find the time to read daily? They adhere to the five-hour rule.

The most successful people on the planet are also the people most likely to devote an hour a day to reading and learning.

Keep a list of the "hardest problems" on hand for moments when inspiration may strike. Just pick that hardest one and work on it giving your 100% to it.

Journaling your ideas and feelings extensively when you're motivated can help you better understand and harness that feeling. "I take notes about what I am feeling, what is motivating me and how this motivation is guiding me," " I can leverage these notes later to motivate me when I need them the most."

If you're feeling more motivated than usual, capitalize on that energy by working on the tedious things you don't like or have been putting off the longest. "This could be tasks like clearing my inbox or a bit of data entry," Balkhi adds. "A surge of energy will make even boring things feel manageable, and it's a great way to help my business by making progress on important tasks."

Motivation can be a powerful tool to propel you toward your goals. The best thing you can do in these moments is to set new small goals that will help you reach your bigger goal. "The first step is to identify what's holding you back from reaching your goal,"... "It could be fear, lack of time or even just laziness."

"You can't lose 25 pounds in a single day, no matter your motivation," Powell explains. "The same is true in business, whether you're building a team or fundraising. Use motivation to create a list of tiny behaviors that move you toward your goal -- ones that you can do every day, regardless of how motivated you feel then."

Create a lasting habit.

During your bout of motivation, Daisy Jing, founder of<a href="https://www.banishacnescars.com/pages/about-banish">Banish </a>, recommends coming up with a lot of reminders that will help you boost your motivation next time you feel down and unproductive.  "Take photos and document what it feels like to be successful in whatever you accomplished by being motivated that day," says Jing. "The idea is to remind yourself why and how you have to stand on your feet again so you won't have to try so hard to feel productive again."
