My Story

My Story

What if the things you’re supposed to do didn’t require as much discipline, but were things you actually WANT and LOVE to do?

As someone who has struggled with discipline for more than half my life, I can tell you my younger self would have never believed that this was even possible.

So today, I’d like to share a simple method to do just that! This is something that has taken me years to figure out, and has been a great help in my own life first.

1.Action, Reward & Dopamine

1.Action, Reward & Dopamine

I know dopamine has a bad rep here, but it’s not that bad when you understand it.

In simple terms, when you do something or get a stimulus and get something positive from it, your brain produces dopamine. Known as the reward hormone. Your mind links the action/stimulus to the reward and that link makes it so that we want to do that thing over and over again.

That’s pretty much how it works.

You can use the same mechanisms to get addicted to taking action & success!

2. The Issue With Most of Our Goals

2. The Issue With Most of Our Goals

The problem is that we often have big goals in life (which is GREAT, don’t get me wrong). The issue with this is that the **action** and the **results** you get from it are too far away from each other.

You start exercising daily today, and you’ll be fit in multiple weeks or months’ time.

Because the action and reward are too far apart, your mind does not make the same connection that it would if you got the reward immediately. You don’t get the same rush of dopamine and thus it is not behavior that your mind wants to reinforce.

3. Becoming Addicted to Action

3. Becoming Addicted to Action

The solution to this is actually fairly simple!

What you want to do is celebrate your actions! Whenever you’re doing something that brings you closer to your goals, take a moment to recognize that as a major win!

Here’s what I liked to do:

Whenever I do something (work out, deep work, writing an article or this post for that matter) I pause, put a big grin on my face and acknowledge the work I’ve just done.

I explicitly tell myself of the great job I’ve just done and how it connects to my long-term goals.
