What is Antimicrobial Resistance?

What is Antimicrobial Resistance?

Antimicrobial resistance occurs when bacteria or other microorganisms that evolve and change over time become resistant to certain drugs making infections harder to treat and increasing the risk of disease spread.

This has become a threat since microorganisms evolve too fast, making it hard for scientists to catch up and create new drugs for the infection.

Main Drivers of Antimicrobial Resistance

Main Drivers of Antimicrobial Resistance

The main drivers of antimicrobial resistance includes:

  1. Misuse and overuse of antimicrobials
  2. Poor infection and disease prevention
  3. Lack of access to clean water and sanitation
  4. Lack of awareness and knowledge

There are many more factors that accelerate the emergence of antimicrobial resistance, but I am going to focus on these four.

Correct Way of Using Antimicrobial Drugs

  • Always, and I mean ALWAYS, seek a physician and ask for a prescription if you think you have an infection.
  • Do not self-medicate with these drugs. A certain drug regimen must be followed for every microorganism.
  • Take them EXACTLY as your doctor tells you, and do not stop taking your antibiotics just because the symptoms of the infection become more tolerable for you.
  • Do not save them for later. Talk to your pharmacist about safely discarding leftover medicines. Also, do not hesitate to ask your pharmacist how to take antibiotics (for example, if you missed a dose).

CURATOR'S NOTE

As a pharmacy student, I am willing to share and educate people about this. The development of new antibiotics has slowed over time, making this issue more serious.
