Evolutionary, human brain wired in a way to use as less energy as possible. This is to save the processing power of brain for more vital functions like vison. So, if some task takes too much processing power brain would try to drop that or hardwire the procedure by forming a habit.
First thing is we must acknowledge the laziness of our brain. So what should do is make the task easy for the brain.
Like many natural phenomenas, each and every habit may require a Activation Energy.
We know that when gasoline is set on fire it quickly ignite. But for that also we need to give some initia energy, by setting it on fire.
But that doesn't mean motivation will carry you to your goal. Because you can set fire on wet wood. You need to dry it first 😉
The idea here is making the task easy for the brain, in other words "establish a viable system".
As much as brain loves ease, brain loves rewards. Brain doesn't only care about the quantity of the reward, but also how fast it can get that. Brain loves instant reward. Thats why even though you want to eat healthy you end up eating much sugar, carbs, salt and oil.
There are many ways to establish a viable system. The basic idea is use the initial energy to make a good pathway brain can follow easily while getting sufficient reward.
If you want to cut a tree in 8 hours, don't just cut the tree. Sharp your knif for the first 7 hours.
If I had eight hours to chop down a tree, I’d spend the first six of them sharpening my axe.
