The first step to solving a problem is acknowledging the problem. More so, to acknowledge that emotions, ultimately, are there for a reason: to serve or protect oneself. 

So what is underlying the emotion? What can truly be learnt from the experience and emotion? Every event has 2 sides to it - what perception was ultimately developed from the event? 

If the perception isn't helping you NOW, you can choose to let it go. Once it's gone, it remains gone. It may want to come back, but it's the commitment to letting go that will create small wins and build upon the grit muscle in the end!
