Lulu Cheng (comms lead @ Substack, Activision Blizzard) believes the foundation for communicating as an up-and-coming company is to identify the cultural erogenous zones of your audience. This should be a phrase that’s resonating with a something the audience deeply cares about. In the case of Substack it was freedom of expression. For the phrase to work it should be:<ul><li>short</li><li>catchy</li><li>memorable</li></ul>Examples: Mark Andreesen’s “It’s time to build”, Trump’s “Make America Great Again”.

The company’s message can not be broadcasted. It needs to spread from in concentric circles:<ul><li>It starts with the founders and the employees. They have to be excited about it</li><li>The message should spread to the power users who are gonna share it with their base</li></ul>For Substack the power users were the early writers (like Lenny) who were passionate about the platform.

The institutional approach to communication is dead. Nobody wanna listen to a faceless company. People don’t trust institutions anymore. Messaging should come from other people that have an audience, that are trustworthy … that have a point of view.

People Only Care About Other Oeople

Force is the total impact of one object on another, whereas pressure is the physical quantity of force spread over a certain area. As a small company you should prioritise force in communication, meaning a focus on very few things. One message with a point of view, few influencers. Going broad (general message that appeals to anyone) will not work if you are small.

Instead sit at a distance of 1 to 1.5ft away. In person you shouldn't be standing too close to them.</li><li>Lean in and raise your eyebrows when something is interesting.</li><li>Don't end your sentence as a question on a high note. Don't uptalk. You can prevent this by speaking on the out-breath as it will make your voice deeper and hence sound more confident.</li><li>Don't fake smile. People will notice it.</li></ul>

<ul><li>Nod three times. The other person will talk 70% more because nodding is a sign of warmth.</li><li>Tilt your head.</li><li>Add vocalisations such as "uhm, mhm, aha, oh". They also show warmth.</li><li>Use warm words that you want the other person to feel. "I can't wait to collaborate with you" will make the other person more collaborative. "I'd love to hug you right now" will make them feel the warmth of a hug on their skin.</li><li>Completely front the other person. Angle everything towards the person. The toes show in the direction someone wants to go, so they should be pointing to your partner.</li><li>Mirror their behaviour.</li></ul>

Toxic People To Avoid

Some people can't go long without complaining about something or someone. While everyone complains sometimes, it's important to find a solution for the problem. Often, the real problem is within our minds, not outside. If you spend too much time complaining, it's because you see yourself as a victim, not as the person who can change your situation.

When we have to deal with people who complain too much, our energy drops quickly. We try to help them or understand their situation, or it's because we are near a low-mood person. But the truth is that only they can change the situation.
Our way of seeing and dealing with the world reflects our internal world.

Everyone has narcissistic traits, which are part of being human. However, some people consistently manifest these traits in each "friendship" and relationship. These people have very low self-esteem but act like they're better than anyone else. It's a mental disorder, and while I'm not a psychologist, you can research online for the main traits and causes of this disorder.

<li>The person lacks empathy and acts/reacts as if they're better than everyone.</li>
<li>They seek admiration and compliments, becoming annoyed if they don't receive enough attention.</li>
<li>They have very low self-esteem and get angry or annoyed when discussing something they don't want to reveal.</li>
<li>Being around these people makes you feel stupid or blamed.</li>
<li>Even in a "good" relationship, you might occasionally sense some of these feelings, but they become very noticeable if the relationship is toxic. </li>
</ul>
(Remember that difficult moments don't necessarily indicate a toxic personality; someone might be reacting due to a sensitive situation.)

General 🚩 to Pay Attention To:

They ask for favors and get angry or annoyed if you don't meet their needs. This is a typical trait of narcissistic personality, and some people only engage with you to ask for favors. They don't give anything in return and don't care about you; they focus solely on their needs and problems.

Manipulative Ones

Dramatic people see themselves as the main victim of every situation. Everything goes wrong, they suffer, and nobody helps them. Even the smallest things can become tragedies. 
They view the world negatively and believe their lives are terrible, assuming they can't change anything.

They can't control their anger and often yell at others because they struggle to control themselves. If they hurt you whenever they're angry, they are toxic individuals. Psychology shows a link between constant anger and depression, as well as how chronic anger can lead to hypertension, heart issues, and liver problems. These people need professional help, but they often fail to recognize it.

5 Rules for Leaders to create a Circle of Safety

Rules keep our society moving forward. It helps leader maintain a Circle of Safety and so on. However rules must to be trusted not obeyed. And most of us obey the rules ... out of fear. This is the reason we often hate bureaucrats. They always follow the rules and never show the human side our brain understands better.Trust is the better way fwd. Trust means people have to trust their leaders and get the freedom to break them when needed.

We don’t just trust people to obey the rules, we also trust that they know when to break them.

How Long Does It Take to Trust Someone? We can never trust someone right away. Meeting a person for the first time naturally releases dopamine that masks how we actually feel about that person until the novelty fades; this is why we shouldn't get married after a week. Conversely, if after several years we still feel like we don't belong in a group, maybe it's time to let go.Getting to know if we can trust someone takes more than 7 days and less than 7 years. These are the magic timeframes of trust.

"Destructive Abundance" is the state where protecting the results is prioritised above protecting those who produce the results.Companies get in this state because the leaders only care about the score but forgot why they decided to play the game in the first place. Challenge is replaced by temptation and people are replaceable.

This is the most important principle in Carnegie's book. It's about taking the time to learn about other people's interests and concerns. When you show genuine interest in someone, they're more likely to feel like you're paying attention to them and that you value their company.His tips for becoming genuinely interested in other people:<ul><li>Ask questions about their interests.</li><li>Listen attentively to their answers.</li><li>Show that you're interested by making eye contact, nodding your head, and smiling.</li><li>Find common ground with them.</li><li>Be empathetic and try to see things from their perspective.</li></ul>

This may be an obvious step for some of you, but if you really want to gain confidence, you need to step out of your comfort zone.Act spontaneously, change your response to situations, do things you would have never done before.You don't need to instantly go do the thing you fear most. Get out of your comfort zone by taking smaller steps first, just by doing new activities or try make some new friends if you travel somewhere. A method that works for me when I feel too scared to do something, is to count down from 3 and just going for it.

A really important step to confidence is to have good people in your life. With this, I mean honest people who can encourage you, and don't bring you down. Of course, in some cases you cannot control the people in your life, such as colleagues or family members, but make sure you also have good people around to talk to.

You may not have confidence in yourself and are afraid to say things because you might be wrong, but trying is always better, even if you fail. Usually, people forget things that happened in a couple minutes or even in a matter of seconds. So if you do mess something up, getting back on track is all you need to do.Or, think about this: you may have seen a person in public doing something strange, but you usually don't care or forget it in about 10 seconds. Why would people respond differently to you?

The best way is just to dress the way you feel most comfortable and confident. You can go for your favorite or best looking outfit so that you really feel like yourself and will at least have confidence in your looks. It's a great method of boosting you confidence in other ways too.If that doesn't work for you, you can also create a more confident version of yourself (who is you but also isn't) by styling your hair differently and/or dressing differently from your usual style.
