In ancient times, when people felt doubted about a place in the lonely forest, the mind made them go back to their tribe and be safe and comfortable.Nowadays, when people try to do a new thing that makes them feel uncomfortable, the mind makes them go back to their comfort. Our mind holds a tactical advantage over us.Whenever you will try to do something that is not your habit, your mind will feel insecure. When you think of going to exercise, your mind tells you to leave it. It protects you from any discomfort. It will tell you to quit. If you hear to it, and give up, the future gives you up.

Our mind wants to protect us

When your mind asks you, "Dude, you remember the day when you said you will not give up on your new year resolutions and you slept for 12 hours the next day? You remember the day when you said you will study the whole night and you dozed off in 30 mins? How in the world do you think you are going to workout every morning? How in the world do you think you are going to run 1 km a day?"You gotcha have an answer to that. You have to shut your mind up. You have to rise above all fears and insecurities, and you have to NOT give up. You have to stay hungry. Hungry for the discomfort and sufferings.

If you can't answer the questions at that moment

You can have more than you've got because you can be more than you are.

A concept of physics-friction- is going to be used here. So when you are not moving, there is a force needed to make you move, to kill off the limiting friction. And when you are moving, there is a force needed to keep you moving, to kill of the kinetic friction.Similarly, the mind's doubt on us is like the friction but we have to have more determination than that, otherwise we simply can't proceed. You can achieve the impossible. It's just about how much force are you willing to fight the mind's friction. Without this force, progress is impossible.

In the end, it's not about fame or being accepted by everyone, it's about who you've been with all this time and how it has all helped you. <ul><li>Praise we've earned can be motivating and help us build confidence. </li><li>Narcissists may use praise to control others by manipulating their sense of self-worth and relational security. </li><li>Narcissists may use praise as love, praise as intimacy, praise as unearned entitlement, and praise paired with abuse to disempower others. </li> </ul>Ah, praise. It can lift us up and send us flying to lofty heights. It can validate, it can motivate, and it can inspire. And, as is true of anything with the power to make us feel so good, praise has a dark side. In the wrong hands, praise has the power to harm.

<ol><li>Praise is not love. Praise is conditional and may be offered or withheld. Love, particularly of a child, must be freely given regardless of performance, behavior, or "status." Love is always there. Praise comes and goes. </li><li>Praise can only be granted by others. Where there is praise, there is always the absence of praise, because praise can only be granted by someone else. As a source of self-worth, it is not sustainable or sustaining because it is external, fleeting, and ultimately beyond our control. </li><li>Unearned praise is disempowering. Whereas love only feels genuine when it is freely given, praise only feels genuine when we've earned it. Unearned praise disempowers others, particularly children, by sending the message that praise is an entitlement rather than something earned with hard work. </li><li>Praise can lead to over-reliance. As we know, the <a href="https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/basics/narcissism">narcissistic </a><a href="https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/basics/personality">personality </a>tends to be relationally antagonistic: competitive, exploitative, and oppressively controlling. Narcissists themselves often seek out praise, and they often use praise to manipulate and control others.

<ol><li>Narcissists use praise in place of love. At the core of the narcissistic personality is a flawed belief that praise is love. In dysfunctional narcissistic families and relationships, acceptance is conditional and praise is used instead of love. Using praise as affection fosters insecurity in others and gives the narcissist control over their sense of relational safety and self-worth.</li></ol>

2. Narcissists "love-bomb" with praise to fake <a href="https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/basics/relationships">intimacy </a>. Love and intimacy are developed through reciprocity, shared vulnerability, and earned trust. Intimacy should never be experienced as a fiery explosion. But narcissistic people often engage in love-bombing, in which they use excessive praise, <a href="https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/basics/attention">attention </a>, and flattery to seduce others into unwarranted trust and premature commitment.

3. Narcissists treat praise as entitlement. People, particularly children, who are reinforced for their efforts internalize a sense of agency and earned <a href="https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/basics/confidence">confidence </a>, which fosters <a href="https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/basics/self-esteem">self-esteem </a>and healthy independence. By contrast, praising people for being special or superior rather than for their hard work fosters an unearned and therefore insecure sense of entitlement. By granting "special" status and privilege to a chosen few and by denying it to others, narcissists dictate what people value in themselves and those around them.

4. Narcissists use praise to foster dependency and reliance. By alternating praise and forms of abuse, narcissists foster dependency and even reliance in others. Children or partners treated to this type of manipulation can become <a href="https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/basics/trauma">trauma </a>-bonded to the narcissist, who uses intermittent reinforcement to control the activation of their <a href="https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/basics/fear">fear </a>response (fight/flight) and reward system (<a href="https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/basics/dopamine">dopamine </a>).

We all can benefit at times from praise that we've earned. Humans are social animals who naturally seek validation from the group, and praise for our efforts can be motivating and help us build confidence that can sustain us through times of trial and adversity. But praise used as a substitute for love or intimacy, granted as an unearned entitlement, or paired with abuse is manipulative and disempowering, and it can create trauma bonds between narcissists and those they seek to dominate.

How Narcissists Weaponize Praise

The first thing that you see from Tommy is that he has slow, relaxed movements. When he isn't physically fighting, he’s almost never in a rush. The way he moves instantly gives you the sense that he’s above feeling intimidated. When you move slowly and comfortably in a situation where most people would be stressed, it shows that you don’t feel scared or pressured.

Make Slow, Relaxed Movements

Along with the slow movement there’s a second body language habit that helps Tommy appear confident: Tommy is comfortable holding eye contact even during conflict. The one mistake you could make with this is trying to hold eye contact all the time: this can actually escalate the tension if neither of you is willing to break. So the goal isn’t to never break eye contact; it’s just to know what your behavior signals to other people.

Hold eye contact if you want to show you aren’t intimidated; look down if your priority is to de-escalate; and if you want to diffuse the situation without projecting fear of discomfort, you can hold eye contact for three to five seconds and then break to the side instead of down.

Tommy’s ability to command respect in moments of conflict comes from the fact that he’s not reactive to hostility. Being non-reactive shows you feel confident in your ability to handle whatever is happening: it’s hard not to respect someone who keeps their cool in situations where most people would lose it. Of course, the goal here isn’t to fake that you’re OK while freaking out on the inside: it’s to cultivate a genuine deep internal confidence.

One more quick body language habit you should steal from Tommy if you want to command attention, specifically in large groups: be as big as your audience. Scale up your hand gestures when you’re speaking to more people.

The next way you can command respect is by focusing on how you speak. The first thing you notice about Tommy when he speaks is that his word choice shows conviction. Specifically when he talks about his plans for the future he doesn’t say “I hope to” or “I want to”, but “I will”.

Beyond word choice, you can show conviction with just your tone. Many people do the opposite, ending their statements in an upward inflection, making them sound like questions. This gives the impression that you’re unsure of yourself. So, if you wanna show conviction with just your tone, end your statements in a downward inflection.

Similar to his slow body language, Tommy also has a slow speaking cadence and uses pauses between words to hold attention. The pause is the moment when you’re not speaking, but ironically it’s the moment you can pull people in. Tommy does this by pausing when you most want to hear what he has to say. You may worry that speaking slowly and pausing a lot will lead to people cutting you off: the way you can prevent this isn’t by rushing to finish or giving up on your thought halfway through, but by continuing to speak in that same slow speaking cadence until you at least finish your sentence.

One of Tommy’s defining features is that he wields tremendous power over people using carrot-stick motivation. Now, obviously we don’t want to be threatening to murder people, so how on earth can we actually apply this to our own life? Well, let’s say you want a raise or a promotion from work: a lot of people would go in and say “hey, boss, I’ve been working here a long time, I would really like a raise, can I have more money?”. Very focused on “I”, not very persuasive.

Use Carrot-Stick Motivation 

How could you instead apply carrot-stick thinking? You could say “hey, boss, I feel like I can add more value to the company and play at a higher level; what would you need to see from me in the next three months to promote me?” Work with your boss to create a concrete list. Then, nail everything on that list. At the same time go out and get other job offers. In 3 months you can show all the value created for your boss (carrot) and, if they back out from the agreement, you can tell them that you want to stay, but you have other offers that pay more (that’s the stick).

Carrot-Stick Thinking Done Right
