In our daily reading, we encounter all kinds of claims. Depending on the news story and the week, Chinese imports, coffee, large-cap stocks, snacking, and eggs should be embraced — or they should be avoided altogether. What’s a person to do when bombarded with confusing, contradictory information?

Gorging On News Feeds

Try thinking like a scientist, says <a href="https://twitter.com/dremmafrans?lang=en">Emma Frans</a>, who’s an epidemiology and psychiatry researcher at Oxford University in the UK and Karolinska Institutet in Sweden.“In present times, our risk of being fooled is especially high,” she says. There are two main factors at play: “Disinformation spreads like wildfire in social media,” she adds, “and when it comes to news reporting, sometimes it is more important for journalists to be fast than accurate.”

Amateur Reporters Disinform; Professionals Often Just Race 

Which is why it’s useful to know how to evaluate news the way a scientist does. Scientists labor under a burden of proof. They must conduct experiments and collect data under controlled conditions to arrive at their conclusions — and be ready to defend their findings with facts, not emotions.“We all have gut feelings and biases that sometimes cloud our judgment,” says Frans. But scientific thinking offers us tools for “evaluating information in a rational way.”

Scientists Choose An Ongoing Labour

Science moves forward by challenging accepted wisdom. You can do the same. When you learn a new piece of information through social media, think to yourself: “This may be true, but it also may be false,” Frans says. “This kind of healthy skepticism does not mean you’re dismissing everything as false — it simply means remembering the things you hear could be false, but they could also be true… or they could be something in between.”

Tool 1: Cultivate Your Scepticism

“In science, researchers have to declare potential conflicts of interest before publishing their findings,” says Frans. When you encounter a new claim, look for conflicts of interest. Ask: Do they stand to profit from what they say? Are they affiliated with an organization that could be swaying them? Two other questions to consider: What makes the writer or speaker qualified to comment on the topic? What statements have they made in the past?

Tool 2: Find Out Who Is Making The Claim

The halo effect, says Frans, “is a cognitive bias that makes our feelings towards someone affect how we judge their claims. If we dislike someone, we are a lot more likely to disagree with them; if we like them, we are biased to agree.” It’s such a common human trait that the scientific community has devised a workaround: New scientific papers under review are read “blind,” with the authors’ names removed. That way, the experts who are deciding whether it’s worthy of publication don’t know which of their fellow scientists wrote it so they’ll be able to react free from pre-judgement or bias.

Tool 3: Watch Out For The Halo Effect

When evaluating a claim, Frans asks, “Can the sources be traced? Are they reliable? Is the conclusion based on a rational evaluation of the information?” And you should try to consider all of the research on a topic. She says, “For instance, if there is one study claiming that drinking wine is just as good for your health as going to the gym, this finding is not relevant if ninety-nine studies show the opposite.” Before you act on or share a particularly surprising or enraging story, do a quick Google search — you might learn something even more interesting.

Tool 4: Look At The Evidence

Another human bias — confirmation bias — means we’re more likely to notice stories or facts that fit what we already believe (or want to believe). As Frans says, “When you search for information, you should not disregard the information that goes against whatever opinion you might have in advance.” Some scientists combat this by seeking out collaborators who, as management thinker <a href="https://www.ted.com/talks/margaret_heffernan_dare_to_disagree/transcript?language=en">Margaret Heffernan </a>puts it, “aren’t echo chambers.”

Tool 5: Beware Of The Tendency To Cherry-pick Information 

The people who aren’t “echo chambers” are people who will actively try to prove you wrong and can help you check your ideas and assumptions. In your own life, look for friends and acquaintances on social media with alternative viewpoints. You don’t have to agree with them, or tolerate misinformation from them — but it’s healthy and balanced to have some variety in your information diet.

Actively Seek “Echo Suppressors” And “Noise Cancellers

Frans researches ADHD and autism, and, she notes, in recent decades, “the number of individuals diagnosed with these disorders have increased rapidly.” Many possible causes have been raised, including vaccinations, video games and junk food. However, she says, “there is no evidence supporting these claims, and it’s important to remember that just because two things increase simultaneously, this does not mean that they are causally linked to each other. Correlation does not equal causality.”

How to read the news like a scientist

An appropriate object can be photographed, printed, trimmed and then glued onto your workbook page – or digitally superimposed upon a page and then printed. Alternatively, you might photocopy an object (placing the item directly upon the photocopier or scanner, with teacher supervision) so that it seamlessly integrates with the page. The remainder of the mind map can then be added by hand. As the photograph becomes a dominant element upon the page, the object should be selected with care.

Take a beautiful photograph to place in the center

This approach gives you an opportunity to play with space and color, while recording ideas. A range of different painted marks could be used – splashes / smears / drips etc. It is worth remembering that color choices should be thoughtful and not distract from subsequent work in your sketchbook.

Use painted areas to contain text

In many cases, the brainstorming phase of an Art project has to be completed quickly, however, if you are a fast drawer and have a spare weekend, you might wish to produce a collection of drawings to illustrate your ideas. You might wish to include a range of different mediums. Before spending considerable time on this exercise, you should check with your art teacher whether this is appropriate for your project.

Draw lots of small pictures to illustrate ideas visually

Integrate a mind map with an ‘incomplete’ image that extends across the page. Many Art students find that drawing itself allows them to relax and thoughts to flow freely. You may wish to make a mind map in and around an observational drawing that sprawls across a page, in a fragmented, semi-complete way. As you think of possible ideas, these could be scrawled upon the drawing and extending out from this, creating an organic and spontaneous record of ideas. Strong observational drawers could find this an excellent way to flaunt skill to the examiner from the very first page of their sketchbook.

Integrate a mind map with an ‘incomplete’ image 

Collecting, ripping and arranging a range of images, textures and surfaces can provide a creative base upon which to write and draw further ideas. These pages from a visual journal explore ideas related to illustration, fairytales and mythology.

Drawing a mind map over blurred and running watercolor forms can result in an exciting abstracted diagram. As mentioned in the above example, colors that link in with the subject matter should be chosen (muted, softer colors are usually more appropriate than psychedelic pinks and greens, for example).

And you can imagine when you're surrounded by people who do a lot of great work, it only feeds your impostor syndrome in a way 'cause you're like, do I belong here?

The Impostor Phenomenon

There are people who tend to overestimate their abilities and some people who tend to underestimate their abilities.People who feel like impostors tend to underestimate their abilities. Because the impostor phenomenon makes high-achieving feel like they're not as intelligent, as bright, as creative, as able as other people think they are. And they live in a constant fear that somebody's going to find that out.

How We Perceive Our Abilities

Awareness is a key factor in helping yourself with the impostor phenomenon.Before you can work through any of this, you have to be able to identify it and understand it. Naming reality helps you find your way through it. Naming it also means recognizing other people feel like this, too. It's a shared experience.

Stop Feeling Like a Fraud: Bring Awareness To The Situation

Be self-soothing. Try affirmations like: "I'm going to do OK, because I did OK last time. I know enough about this. I don't have to be perfect." It's essential to have grace for yourself. No one is perfect. We're all trying the best we can.

Being Self-Compassionate

We must acknowledge the societal impact that influences this feeling.Different racial and even gender groups are messaged with various things about their place in society. What we see, hear, and read can intensify this phenomenon.

Social Causes of The Impostor Syndrome

<ul><li>Look to people who you are hoping to learn from and accept that you don't have to be an expert. It won't make you look weak.</li><li>Create community and build up your support system.</li><li>Ask your friends not to say, "you're going to do great; don't worry about it". Tell them about the kind of support that you need is related to understanding your anxiety, your fear, your feelings and say, I'll be here for you.</li></ul>

Ask For Help

Take a break when the pressure is high and be curious about how you're feeling.Don't judge yourself. Take some deep breaths. Get a good night's sleep when you can, or take a nap if that helps. If exercise is your thing, you can do that, too - whatever healthy choice you think may help reset your mind.

Shake The Feeling That You're A Fraud

<ul><li>Imposter syndrome was first described by two clinical psychologists in 1978. </li><li>They coined the term ‘imposter phenomenon’, a condition in which people believe they are not worthy of success and have a persistent belief in their lack of intelligence, skills, or competence.</li><li>Imposter syndrome involves much more than just feeling fraudulent and it presents itself in a long list of different ways. It may appear as insecurity, self-doubt, fear of failure, and perfectionism. Or as self-criticism, low self-esteem, an inability to accept compliments.</li></ul>

The Imposter Phenomenon

<ul><li>Imposter syndrome can be triggered by any achievement or approval-related task or as a result of feeling insecure about your knowledge or skills, particularly when you work in a competitive atmosphere and when responsibilities increase.</li><li>It tends to be more intense during times of transition or change, or when you are faced with new challenges (a new job, project, or being accepted into higher education). This pushes you out of your comfort zone into new routines and puts you under increased scrutiny.</li><li>The syndrome can also occur when you feel different from the core group you are part of.</li></ul>

What Triggers The Imposter Syndrome

Imposter syndrome normally occurs when there is a tension between two views: the standards you set yourself and how you assess yourself as doing.
The high standards you set yourself are a large part of the problem, as is the negative internal voice you use to motivate yourself. You expect that you need to be the best and do everything flawlessly in your career, relationships, and personal life.

Setting Unrealistic High Standards

These are the internal rules that people with imposter syndrome generally follow:<ol><li>Perfectionists set excessively high standards for themselves and believe they should deliver always a perfect performance.</li><li>Natural Geniuses strive to master any new skill quickly and with little effort.</li><li>The Soloist defines competence as being able to do something on their own and believes that achievement only counts if it is unassisted. </li><li>The Expert needs to know it all and believe true competence means knowing absolutely everything.</li><li>The Superwoman/man ‘measures competence based on “how many” roles they can excel in.</li></ol>

The Competence Types

Imposters fear being found out or not being good enough so strongly that they do not question their fear. If what you believe is true, then you’re right to be scared: being found out, failing, the humiliation that comes with what you imagine – these are terrifying. Fear puts an anxious filter on everything we do. But there’s a fine line between feelings and facts. Our feelings can trick us into believing that things are worse than they are.

Imposter Syndrome Is All About Fear

Confident people do feel this discomfort and do experience some of the same fears. But they come to a different conclusion and this allows them to override their feelings.Instead of interpreting their discomfort as meaning that they are imposters, they see it as a fear associated with doing something new and stepping out of their comfort zone. The discomfort is caused by anxiety and non-imposters recognize it as just that, seeing it as a sign that they’re unsure or they worry that they won’t do well – again, all very human and all very normal.

How Confident People Approach Discomfort

Family environment, family dynamics, and the way our parents raised us combine with our personality and our experience of the world to shape our belief system and give us a sense of who we are as a person. This means that what you learned as a child influences how you see and experience things now, and these childhood experiences shape your approach to life.
Nature and nurture are not separate – each has an impact on the other. Your personality type interacts with your experiences and has an effect on the world’s response to you.

The Psychology of Feeling Like a Fraud

You decided a long time ago that you were a fraud and for years you’ve been building an argument in support of this in your head, ignoring any information that doesn’t fit and operating a strong bias against yourself. This unwavering belief is one of the biggest reasons you’re unable to move forward.Constructive criticism, negative feedback, and mistakes are all proof that you’re not good enough. You go over them in your head and replay them in micro detail.

Imposter Syndrome Is An Example Of Confirmation Bias

How We Downplay Our Success

<ul>
<li>Overworking. The feeling that you are a fraud inspires greater effort and conscientiousness because you imagine that everyone else is more capable and intelligent than you.</li>
<li>Avoidance. When you aspire to such high standards and have an overwhelming fear of failure, it’s no wonder that sometimes you avoid doing what you need to do, procrastinating when you just can’t face the effort that starting involves or stopping halfway through when finishing seems too difficult.</li>
</ul>

Overworking and Avoidance

You need to see that this is not your voice, but the voice of your fears.
The better you get at spotting the imposter voice in action, the more successfully the strategies will work

Externalize the Imposter Voice

You may feel like an imposter, but that doesn’t mean you are one. Your thoughts and feelings are useful, but they only form part of the picture, especially when it comes to anything imposter syndrome-related.When you hear the voice, remind yourself that the imposter's voice is a thought, not a fact. There’s always more than one perspective. When you feel discomfort remind yourself that this is just how you feel, not how things are.

Thoughts Aren’t Facts

To really believe that how you feel is no different from the way other people feel you have to start talking more openly about what’s going on.
This is the only way for you to be sure that when others look confident and capable they may not feel that way all the time.

Talk to Other People

When you see yourself as completely responsible for making everything go well, you take responsibility for anything that goes wrong.Don't forget about the other people involved and their shared responsibility. And no matter how hard you try, there’s no route through life that is pain-free and in trying to prevent anything ever going wrong you’re causing yourself much greater stress. Things do sometimes go wrong, but you will get over it and see that often the outcome is even better.

You Can’t Control Everything

Having compassion for yourself is really no different from having it for others. No one is perfect, we all make mistakes and it’s OK to feel stressed or sad. Pain and suffering are part of our shared human experience; they are just a reaction to what’s going on in our life.
Self-compassion has three main components:

<li>Recognizing when we’re stressed or struggling without being judgemental or overreacting</li>
<li>Being supportive, gentle and understanding to ourselves when we’re having a hard time</li>
<li>Remembering that everyone makes mistakes and experiences difficulties at times.</li>

When learning from home, visual learners need to minimize distractions. Visual learners can also make their own diagrams, designs, or even doodles; taking visual notes helps them retain information.

Auditory learners can thrive in distance learning environments because online classes tend to place a greater emphasis on sound and listening. Auditory learners may benefit from using headphones when attending class to block out other sounds. If their professors don't mind, sometimes turning off the screen can help auditory learners focus on the material. Reading material out loud can also help auditory learners absorb new information.

Hybrid and virtual learning environments are particularly helpful for kinesthetic learners. Professors generally frown upon walking around during a lecture, but in a virtual environment, kinesthetic learners can turn on recorded material and move while they listen to or study it. A standing or walking desk can also help kinesthetic learners keep moving while actively engaging with their courses.

Tips for Kinesthetic Learners

Many college classes already gear their material toward reading/writing learners. In an online format, reading/writing learners can increase their productivity by taking notes during online lectures and discussions. Some online platforms create automatic transcripts for lectures, which reading-centered learners can use to follow along or review content later. Rewriting and rereading also helps these learners cement new information.

The Second Way is about creating the right to left feedback loops. The goal of almost any process improvement initiative is to shorten and amplify feedback loops so necessary corrections can be continually made.The outcomes of the Second Way include understanding and responding to all customers, internal and external, shortening and amplifying all feedback loops, and embedding knowledge where we need it.

The Third Way is about creating a culture that fosters two things: continual experimentation, taking risks and learning from failure; and understanding that repetition and practice is the prerequisite to mastery. We need both of these equally. Experimentation and taking risks are what ensures that we keep pushing to improve.
