Do the opposite. Sometimes, doing the opposite of what makes sense makes even more sense. When Nick got a new job in the east of London, his commute was going to take him on the packed tube. He knew that journey wasn’t going to provide the right frame of mind to set him up for the day. Instead, he worked out he could take the riverboat to work. On the face of it, it was a more inefficient journey, but taking the slow route ensured he always arrived more energized than if he’d taken the tube.

This topic might interest you, well I hope it does, maybe, just maybe you might find a reason for reading this article. It is impossible to make it through anything, a job, studies, relationships if you do not have the ear to listen and to listen twice. I will share an experience I recently had at my workplace, hopefully, that might make you see the absolute importance of listening to understand. It’s funny how teachers used to say understanding the problem is part of the solution and that a greater part of the work is done when we understand what the question is demanding from us.

GETTING THE JOB DONE: THE IMPORTANCE OF LISTENING


I hit a terrible curve this week at work and it was brought to my attention the reason I struggle so much with doing the actual work is that I am quick to write and that has always been my problem. I may be the only one (I really hope I am not) but I used to think taking actual notes helped, no matter where you are. So from notes taking to minutes writing, the important thing for me was having actual notes to take but if I am being completely honest, referring to the notes after the lesson was over, especially if I rushed to write everything down, just made me realize

How It Happened

I understood very little of what was taught. The interesting thing is, it followed me everywhere I went; I would miss important information because I was always writing and never really listened to understand. I guess in my mind, I thought having notes helped because then, it was easy to refer but boy, was I wrong. I struggle now because I have this mindset, a fixed one, which believes taking notes down is the better route than actually listening to what is being said.

What I Realized

There was an instruction given at work, a very simple do A, get B as the result and I thought I understood it. It was only after I got into doing A, that I realized I did not fully understand how that would get me closer to the result. My mistake was not listening attentively to the instruction that was given, to not paying full attention which affected me in the long run because I was called out and my work was ‘’rubbished’ for the rubbish it was. The work showed two things; No Real understanding of the task and no attention to detail. I struggled to make up for it.

The Real Problem

The truth is, what matters when we work is that when the work is done, it must reflect an understanding of what was expected and delivery on the goal.If you find yourself struggling with delivering actual results at work, maybe these 5 steps will help you figure things out.

What I Am Learning

First and most importantly, understand the task. Understanding the task will not come to you if you struggle with listening. Here’s a simple test for you: after you listen to an instruction, ask yourself what the core of the instruction was and see if you are able to remember, if you aren’t, you probably didn’t understand a word of what was said.

5 Tips To Help

Second, ask questions. It is not wrong to not know everything or fully understand and no one will fault you when you ask questions. One thing very important about the work we do is that, if it is not up to standard, if it falls below the belt, then we haven’t truly worked. If you struggle with anything, maybe after you received the instruction, you found yourself wondering what exactly you were asked to do, then ask questions, be clear on what that means.

Tips #2

Third point, stop writing everything down. I’ll say that again, stop writing everything down. It is not the length of words you write but how much you have been able to consume. Think of it this way; you are better off being able to explain to someone what was said when you have a better understanding of it yourself. Writing just takes the place of listening, writing is good but not when someone is saying something directed to you. You must learn, train yourself to listen first and then write, that way you help you.

Tip #3

Don’t be afraid to seek advice, it is important to getting the work done. So you listened alright, you believe you had an understanding of what the work demanded but you are still struggling. It helps no one if you stay in your corner, beating yourself up, just sulking; get up and get help. Ask someone, ‘’So I was doing this but it seems I am stuck and I need help”, these simple words can help you more than you know. Next time you hit a wall in your work, don’t talk to the wall or sit there, retrace your steps and find someone to help you break through that wall of confusion.

Tip #4

Lastly, train yourself to listen twice as much as you write. It is not easy, it is an art that can be learned but it begins with having a growth mindset and learning that, sticking to your guns won’t help much; it actually doesn’t. Listening is twice as hard because you have to be able to follow the train of thoughts of the person speaking and still be able to express those ideas in your own voice. Tell me how this isn’t hard? It can feel like a burden because it forces you into two habits: the habit you’re trying to build and the habit of tracking it. First, manual tracking should be limited to your most important habits. It is better to consistently track one habit than to sporadically track ten. He also focuses on being clear about the target, the dream. Its about developing that behaviour of a champion and being able to control what is within your limits.

Don't Focus On Winning

Many of us are self critical. We tend to bash ourselves after a failure for a very long time. Being analytical is one thing and self critical another.We tend to think we're useless, in the wrong field, not deserving etc. Don't let that happen.Give yourself time to feel bad. But limit that negative talk time. Set a timer say 20 mins. In these 20mins you can bash yourself all you want but beyond which you won't talk or think about it. If timer isn't possible keep a physical sign say at your doorstep you'll stop thinking no matter what. Train your brain to do it in limited time.

Imagine you are at the start of a race. You see your competitors. All look built up like proper runners. You start feeling that you've got no chance although you've been practicing well.This thinking already sets the tone for your race. You wouldn't win even if you tried now because your mind already told you that you're not going to win. You will try hard but it will be difficult to get on from there.Don't feel overwhelmed by the people around you. Stay confident. Push that negative thought out as soon as it comes.

Environment Stressors

All of us know this. It's self explanatory. Sweaty palms, nausea, muscular movements, faster heart rates and what not. We have all been through this a lot many times to know we're in stress. The human brain wasn't meant to deal with stress thousands of years ago. The occasional threat was a predator. All these physical changes were preparatory phase to fight and flight.However today it means different. This stress response has the power to spoil our performance. Nervousness and anxiety make you commit mistakes.

To perform at your highest level you need to be able to fight off this stress response.Slow down. Don't rush. Take a deep breath.When you slow down, you allow your body to be able to adjust to the stress hormones in the system and make sense of it. 10 Principles on building a Second Brain

Instead of starting from scratch, you can use other people's ideas and put them together with your own, and create something that benefits you.That way, you spend time creating what you need to reach your goals, instead of wasting hours trying to start from zero.Example:  If you use Notion, you may know that the templates created by notion users can be used and personalized by others.

1. Borrowed Creativity

Our mind is fragile, therefore every idea, thought or information that interests us must be captured and recorded either manually or digitally.Example: When reading a book, listening to a podcast, or any activity about a certain topic, if you find something that resonates with you should save it and use it.

2. The Capture Habit

Reusing our own ideas in several projects is an activity that can be very useful to us since we not only relate the new information with what we already have but in this way we avoid starting a project with a blank mind.

3. Idea Recycling

When capturing an idea, instead of categorizing it in a folder, it is better to join it with other documents that have a clear objective such as a project or activity.
Example: You want to be more productive, gather all the ideas that help to that end.

4. Projects Over Categories

Although you could finish a project, task or activity if you focus on it for a long period of time, this does not mean that you should do it.You will end up exhausted and limited to advance one project at a time. Instead, dividing your schedule into different activities and repeating them every day is more convenient.Example: Instead of cramming all night, studying a few hours every day is better for our health and more effective.

5. Slow Burns

Do not start with a blank page, when dealing with a new topic, you may have read or saved some information that is related to it, therefore you can use these papers or researches that you did to start and have a better vision on the subject.

6. Start with abundance

Known as a block of content or information in an essay. It is like a section or paragraph in the paper, you can take them and use them in other projects.If you can, memorize the blocks of information that can help you in the future so that you can insert them whenever you want.

7. Intermediate Packets

We can see, listen, and read all kinds of things that interest us, but at the end of the day what we are going to be left with is everything we do with that information, whether it is a summary of these materials or some other activity such as writing your opinion or thoughts about it.

8. You only know what you make

Create documents or files that your future self can easily understand, use your own words, make mind maps, or do your own summaries because you will most likely forget everything you are learning now.Example: The infographic at the beginning is a good example, it synthesizes the concepts and activities involved in building a Second Brain.

9. Make it easier for your future self:

It doesn't matter how much information you're storing in your second brain if you don't put it into practice, it's useless for it to be there accumulating.Example: We all know that exercising is good, but not all of us practice it.
