Not As Smart As You Think

We like to think of ourselves as highly evolved and rational beings who think, feel, and act in ways that are intentional and reasonable. We hold this perception because it enables us to believe that we are “captains” of our lives and help us believe that we are in control of the choices we make and the direction our lives go. In reality, considerable evidence in both <a href="https://www.verywellmind.com/what-is-a-cognitive-bias-2794963#:~:text=A%20cognitive%20bias%20is%20a,and%20judgments%20that%20they%20make.&text=Cognitive%20biases%20are%20often%20a,attempt%20to%20simplify%20information%20processing.">psychology </a>and <a href="https://www.thechicagoschool.edu/insight/business/everyday-examples-of-behavioral-economics/">behavioral economics </a>demonstrates that we are far from the Mr. Spock-like thinkers and actors that we hold ourselves up to be.The reason why we don’t always think or behave in ways that are logical.

Who Has Control Of This Ship? 

Our Unconscious Mind The unconscious part of our minds is outside of our conscious awareness and is not easily accessible, meaning we can’t just conjure its content up like we can a seemingly forgotten telephone number (that resides in our <a href="https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/basics/unconscious">subconscious </a>). This lack of ready availability makes our unconscious minds both mystifying (“<a href="http://chan%2C%20david%2C%20%22why%20people%20self-sabotage%2C%20and%20how%20to%20stop%20it%22%20%282019%29.%20research%20collection%20school%20of%20social%20sciences.%20paper%203079.%20https//ink.library.smu.edu.sg/soss_research/3079">Why do I keep doing things that hurt me </a>?”) and seemingly beyond our control, often leading to a sense of frustration and helplessness.The unconscious mind consists of three forces that often lead us down unhealthy roads.

First, despite our being supposedly so evolved compared to the rest of the animal kingdom with our cerebral cortex and, more importantly, our pre-frontal cortex, we frequently still <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4451179/">respond to the world as animals </a>driven by our primitive instincts, emotions, and reactions (e.g., survival instinct, <a href="https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/basics/fear">fear </a>, and fight or flight, respectively). Not surprising given that these unconscious forces have been driving all living beings since we climbed out of the primordial muck around 3.5 billion years ago. In contrast, our cerebral cortex has only been around for about 250,000 years. L

Second, carrying around emotional baggage from our <a href="https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/basics/child-development">childhood </a>is, for most of us, a part of the human condition. Early in our lives, we develop certain ways of thinking, feeling, and behaving that help protect us from some perceived threat and survive in hostile environs of varying degrees. For example, to feel safe around an angry parent, we learned to be passive and accommodating. To be rewarded by a demanding parent, <a href="https://www.researchgate.net/publication/313684716_Child_Perfectionism_and_its_Relationship_with_Personality_Excessive_Parental_Demands_Depressive_Symptoms_and_Experience_of_Positive_Emotions">we became a perfectionist </a>. These protective mechanisms were highly functional when we were young. Unfortunately, in adulthood, what had been functional can become dysfunctional

Lastly, the more that primitive forces and emotional baggage direct our lives, the more those characteristic ways of acting on and reacting to our world become habitual and the first response we make, even when it may not be appropriate or healthy. For example, when we perceive someone judging us, we react with defensiveness and <a href="https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/basics/anger">anger </a>because that’s the way we’ve always reacted, even though such a reaction usually does more harm than good.

The PFC allows us to engage in what is commonly referred to as “<a href="https://developingchild.harvard.edu/science/key-concepts/executive-function/">executive functioning </a>,” which involves the ability to guide our behavior in more intentional ways by weighing pros and cons, calculating risk and rewards, deciding what is best for us in the present, and, at an important level, empowering our conscious mind to override our unconscious mind.

At the same time, I don’t want to completely discredit any value that our unconscious minds may have; Mr. Spock made poor decisions despite his strong sense of what is logical. The unconscious mind isn’t driven solely by unhealthy forces. On the contrary, whether you want to call it your gut, <a href="https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/basics/intuition">intuition </a>, spirit, or what have you, we all have the capacity to allow our non-linear and emotional sense to guide us in making healthy choices and steering the direction we take in our lives. This intuitive part of us can draw on information that may not be readily available to our conscious mind,

Edmonia Lewis was the first professional African American sculptor, born in New York in 1843/45. Her father was a free African American and her mother a Chippewa Indian. From the beginning, she was determined to become a sculptor. With a minimum of training, exposure, and experience, Lewis began producing medallion portraits of known abolitionists. With sales of her portrait busts of abolitionist John Brown and Colonel Robert Gould Shaw, the Boston hero and white leader of the celebrated African American 54 Regiment of the Civil War, Lewis was able to finance her first trip to Europe in 1865.

Edmonia Lewis 

She traveled to London, Paris, and Florence, and decided to settle in Rome for two years. There, she became involved with a group of American women sculptors and began to work in marble. Sculptors usually hired local workmen to carve their final pieces, but Lewis did all her own stonework out of fear that if she didn’t, her work would not be accepted as original. In addition to creating portrait heads, Lewis sculpted Biblical scenes and figural works dealing with her Native American heritage and the oppression of Black people. Unfortunately, most of Lewis’s sculptures have not survived.

Portrait busts of abolitionists and patrons (such as Anna Quincy Waterston), and subjects depicting her dual African American and Native American ancestry were Lewis's specialty. She also completed several mythological subjects or "fancy pieces," such as the figure biblical Hagar, which you can see above.

how many times have you failed or haven’t received the outcome you wanted based on the amount of hardwork you did put in? Personally, i never properly experienced failure but just recently when I did not pass an exam to which i dedicated my whole last year, it was heart shattering but even so because it was something i personally chose for myself. Fearing my parents disappointed expressions made me even more anxious. When people have so many expectations from you and fail to accomplish them, it makes you think extremely low of yourself.

You Will Fall But Don't Ever Consider Yourself A Failure

Failure is such a cruel experience, people say it’s something to learn from but no one mentions how to stand up once again after falling down from that failure. It makes you feel depressed, demotivated, worthless. It seems everything is going wrong, everything seems chaotic and dull at the same time. But this is the part when one needs to shut out other’s voices and just listen to their own. This is the moment to re-evaluate your purpose, your goal and redirect your life.

Was the goal that you were working towards really yours? or were you fooled to believe someone else’s dream as yours? If it was yours, were the efforts put in by you not enough? If the dream was not yours, why did you begin in the first place, if you did achieve it, will you feel happy? Was it something that you liked when you first began but now along the way, you lost interest and now are not sure if it’s right for you anymore?

One needs to understand that it’s not necessary for your dream to stay the same, as time goes, you change, your expectations, your capabilities changes, so how can your dream stay the same. Sometimes our evaluation of one self is wrong, we either overestimate our capabilities or underestimate them and end up being in the wrong path. We create wrong dreams for us. Putting your everything, your energy your hardwork may not result in success cause your are putting energy in something that’s not for you.

So after failure is not the time to question your abilities but to question your dreams. The time for self reflection, taking time for yourself and not rushing in but slowing down in reaching a conclusion. I know it’s hard, extremely hard with the weight of failure, disappointment weighing you down, but you got to realise that this is the time when you need yourself the most. It’s not the time to lose hope but to be grateful that you got saved early on from dedication your time on something which was not meant for you.

Go and explore your options once again, chose wisely and patiently and don’t dwell on that failure and start afresh. You sure will succeed, it’s all about being true to yourself and giving yourself some time. Everything’s going to work your way, i believe in you.
