So people know what to expect and you can stay hands-off. </li><li>A systematic approach for evaluating new activities and a method for when and why you say yes or no. This should also include regular points throughout the year when you cull activities that have accumulated on your schedule but don’t belong there.</li></ul>

A sustainable writing system needs:<ul><li>A focus on positive relationship with your writing. Nurturing that relationship and creating opportunities for positive feelings keeps you coming back.</li><li>Re-entry points. Life happens, and you might need to take a step back from writing at some point. You need a system that gets you back to writing</li><li>Ways to create momentum. We use “soar states” as part of our system. This involves leveraging your natural high energy times. We use tools like evaluating personal task completion times, writing sprints, and retreats. </li></ul>

A sustainable pipeline and planning system needs:<ul><li>Tangibility. You need to be able to see your pipeline mapped out. </li><li>To be personal to you. Once you figure out how long it takes you to complete tasks, you’ll be able to create a personalized pipeline that works for you. Don’t worry about how fast you are. Predictability is better than speed.</li><li>Adaptability. Your pipeline needs to be editable, and flexible enough to change and grow with your needs.</li></ul>Break down projects into tasks and how long it takes you to complete those tasks will help you figure out how to set up your pipeline for success.

Without plans and goals, organizations merely react to daily occurrences without considering what will happen in the long run. For example, the solution that makes sense in the short term doesn't always make sense in the long term. Plans avoid this drift situation and ensure that short‐range efforts will support and harmonize with future goals.

Gives an organization a sense of direction.

Plans keep the people who carry them out focused on the anticipated results. In addition, keeping sight of the goal also motivates employees

Focuses attention on objectives and results. 

Diverse groups cannot effectively cooperate in joint projects without an integrated plan. Examples are numerous: Plumbers, carpenters, and electricians cannot build a house without blueprints. In addition, military activities require the coordination of Army, Navy, and Air Force units.

Establishes a basis for teamwork.

When management plans, it can help forecast future problems and make any necessary changes up front to avoid them. Of course, surprises — such as the 1973 quadrupling of oil prices — can always catch an organization short, but many changes are easier to forecast. Planning for these potential problems helps to minimize mistakes and reduce the “surprises” that inevitably occur.

Helps anticipate problems and cope with change

Decisions are future‐oriented. If management doesn't have any plans for the future, they will have few guidelines for making current decisions. If a company knows that it wants to introduce a new product three years in the future, its management must be mindful of the decisions they make now. Plans help both managers and employees keep their eyes on the big picture.

Planning is primary, because without knowing what an organization wants to accomplish, management can't intelligently undertake any of the other basic managerial activities: organizing, staffing, leading, and/or controlling.

Here are ten things I do in the morning to make sure I have a better day – give it a shot, and you may just find yourself one step closer to feeling like a Certified Morning Person.

I know you’ve heard this a million times, but it really does make things harder. I have a much harder time waking up and feeling awake all day if I hit the snooze button on my alarm in the morning. Get up after one alarm and let yourself slowly adjust to being human again, but don’t go back to sleep – it just confuses the hell out of your body.

1. Actually don't hit snooze

You’ll thank yourself when you come home to a hot meal at the end of your long day, and thankfully, most crock-pot meals aren’t too difficult to throw together in a few minutes in the morning.

2. Put something in the slow 

True that you can do them when you get home from work, but will you want to? No. The answer is a hard no.

3. Do your dishes after breakfast.

Let it chill in there all day, then pop some coffee ice cubes in it when you hit your afternoon slump for a little pick-me-up.

4. Put your coffee leftovers in the fridge.

I know we spend a lot of time on TFD talking people out of buying pricey work lunches because it is something people are often guilty of, but to be honest, I personally get way more excited when I know I’ve packed my own little lunch that I can eat whenever I want without having to go into the outside world, seek out food, and purchase it. Put last night’s leftovers into a Tupperware container or simply throw an apple and a sleeve of Ritz crackers in your bag. Anything that gets you jazzed up works.

5. Pack yourself a little lunch.

Know of anything you’ll need at-the-ready tomorrow morning? Put it out now so you don’t have to worry about it when you get home. It’ll be one less thing for you to worry about preparing after you return from a long day at work.

6. Think ahead to tomorrow.

Working out in the morning (if you can make the time) is one of the best things you can do for your day. I’ve struggled between figuring if I would be a morning-gym-person or an afternoon/evening-gym-person before realizing and accepting that I’m just not someone who feels like working out regardless of the time of day. So I stick to doing it in the morning, because at least I have the added bonus of feeling like a healthful, accomplished badass all day post-workout.

7. Do something kind for your body.

Because it is, again, one less thing for you to do at night, and it helps you wake up and feel more energized even if you’re moping around and not wanting to go to work. I’ve tried being both a “night-shower-person” and a “morning-shower-person” before, and morning always wins. It is essentially the only way to truly wake me up and get me ready for the day, and I cannot stress how much worse I feel all day if I don’t get a chance to shower in the morning.

8. Shower.

I’m always tempted to shed my pajamas and toss them on the floor when I get dressed in the morning, but picking everything up and putting it in its proper place always makes me feel so much better. I hate coming home to clothes thrown on the floor – I’d rather take the extra few minutes to pick up after myself when I’m rushing around in the morning than deal with it all when I get home later in the day.

9. Pick up around the house.

Spend a few minutes going over your master to-do list, and picking the few items on it that are going to be prioritized today, and loosely sequencing them. Your day will be so much better and go much more smoothly if you start off in the morning with a solid idea and loose timeline of what you’ll be accomplishing during the day (once you’ve finished your coffee, of course).Mary writes every day for TFD, and <a href="https://twitter.com/mawyalyssa">tweets </a>every day for her own personal fulfillment. 15 Paradoxes That Will Change Your Life

We agree to many requests not because we want to do them, but because we don’t want to be seen as rude, arrogant, or unhelpful. Often, you have to consider saying no to someone you will interact with again in the future—your co-worker, your spouse, your family and friends.

Why We Say Yes

The words “yes” and “no” get used in comparison to each other so often that it feels like they carry equal weight in conversation. In reality, they are not just opposite in meaning, but of entirely different magnitudes in commitment.When you say no, you are only saying no to one option. When you say yes, you are saying no to every other option.

The Difference Between Yes and No

Saying no is sometimes seen as a luxury that only those in power can afford. And it is true: turning down opportunities is easier when you can fall back on the safety net provided by power, money, and authority. But it is also true that saying no is not merely a privilege reserved for the successful among us. It is also a strategy that can help you become successful.

The Role of No

Over time, as you continue to improve and succeed, your strategy needs to change.The opportunity cost of your time increases as you become more successful. At first, you just eliminate the obvious distractions and explore the rest. As your skills improve and you learn to separate what works from what doesn’t, you have to continually increase your threshold for saying yes.

Upgrading Your No

Most of us are probably too quick to say yes and too slow to say no. It’s worth asking yourself where you fall on that spectrum.If you have trouble saying no, you may find the following strategy proposed by Tim Harford, the British economist I mentioned earlier, to be helpful. He writes, “One trick is to ask, “If I had to do this today, would I agree to it?” It’s not a bad rule of thumb, since any future commitment, no matter how far away it might be, will eventually become an imminent problem.”

How to Say No

More effort is wasted doing things that don’t matter than is wasted doing things inefficiently. And if that is the case, elimination is a more useful skill than optimization.I am reminded of the famous Peter Drucker quote, “There is nothing so useless as doing efficiently that which should not be done at all.”

The Ultimate Productivity Hack is Saying No

1 on 1 meetings offer 10x return on investment, according to former Intel CEO Andy Grove. They should be something you look forward to. Done well, effective 1 on 1 meetings are an opportunity for: <ul><li>Feedback</li><li>Coaching</li><li>Rapport building</li><li>And talking about all the things important to you that seem to always slip.</li></ul> They’re a chance for you and your manager to strengthen your working relationship, and get out of the day-to-day task grind.

1:1 Meetings

One of the biggest sins preventing managers from having effective 1 on 1 meetings is frequently canceling them. Don’t let the manager cancel. Ask to reschedule if possible. It’s hard to get into a good rhythm if you go weeks (or months) without talking. Even worse, it can cause a backup of issues to discuss that get worse as they go unaddressed. No one likes seeing a problem coming and then having to watch it blow up. Without a 1 on 1 meeting, you may not get a chance to talk about it before it’s too late.

Effective 1 On 1 Meetings With You: No Cancellations

It’s hard to say no to your manager when they come to you asking to cancel your 1 on 1 meeting. They probably came to you with a good reason. And they are your manager, after all. It’s hard to say no to them for anything they ask. Try saying: “Okay. I understand you have something pressing, and these meetings are important to me. When can we reschedule our 1 on 1 meeting to?”

Don’t Let The Manager Off The Hook

<ul><li>Reciprocity: You’re agreeing to what they want, and immediately set them up to then feel obligated to return the favour by rescheduling in exchange for not meeting now.</li><li>And, not but: By framing your response using “and” instead of “but”, you build on the discussion instead of feeling like you’re disagreeing.</li><li>Immediacy: By immediately requesting to schedule a different time you ensure they don’t forget about it.</li></ul>

The Three Golden Persuasive Techniques

When a manager or team member says they don’t see the value of effective 1 on 1 meetings, it’s a virtual certainty they spend most of the meeting talking about projects and status updates. That’s a huge waste.For your manager, it can be so tempting: they finally have a chance in an otherwise hectic week to talk to you about your work. If you’re on a big team, this may be one of the few times they meet with you alone.

Avoid Status Updates

Your manager needs a status update, even if you don’t talk about it in your 1 on 1 meeting. The best way to get them out of your 1 on 1 meeting then is to find ways to get them a status update another time. Here are a few techniques: <ul><li>Email Update: Simply send them an email at a frequency you agree makes sense with some basic updates from you on your work.</li><li>Stand Up Meeting: Suggest to your manager you and the team start having a standup meeting to provide daily, bite-size updates. </li><li>Use a Tool to Help: There are quite a few tools out there like IDoneThis and StandupJack. </li></ul>

Don’t Let Status Updates Hijack a 1:1 Meeting

<ul><li>It’s not your manager’s fault if you have nothing to talk about in your 1 on 1 meeting.</li><li>In fact, every time you come to your meeting with nothing to discuss, it makes them dread their 1 on 1 meeting with you a little more. It also gives them another reason to want to cancel or fill the time with status updates.</li><li>No one likes pulling teeth, and it can be excruciating to try to draw everything out of you. This is why it’s important for you to think about what you want to talk about.</li></ul>

Bring Things You Want To Talk About

Your Career/Growth Goals: If you have an aspiration, don’t assume your manager knows it. Bring it up.Team Improvement: Have ideas to help the team improve, or work better? Effective 1 on 1 meetings are a great time to discuss them and either come up with ways to apply them or understand why you can’t do them.Self Improvement: Want help, feedback, or coaching on something? Ask!Personal Topics: Any personal thing like family stress or sickness bothering you? Talk about it. You will gain empathy and get assistance as well.

Make Your Agenda 

Career growth and development conversations are an essential part of how to have effective 1 on 1 meetings.Your manager likely knows about opportunities in the company that you don’t.
