Preparing for a second interview

Your competence will be validated with

  • Your resume
  • A phone screen
  • The interview
  • Questions regarding the competence of the position, although it's really more about compatibility. This is more so when you are interviewing at a higher level.

When you are interviewing even one level up from the hiring manager, they don't really understand the details of your job. You will probably know more than they do. So you can't really prepare as far as technical or operational questions, but you can prepare by understanding compatibility and getting engaged with the person that's interviewing you.

Two types of interviewers

There are two kinds of individuals that will be interviewing you at this level.

  • Somebody who likes to be the centre of attention. They enjoy being conversationalists. In this case, you should never interrupt them but listen and ask engaging questions about the business and organisation.
  • Somebody who doesn't like to be the centre of attention. Here you can come prepared with some good stories of what you've done before. The best customers you ever worked with, or something that really went well.
