You gain weight when you consume more calories than you are able to burn. For this reason, exercise is incredibly useful since it allows you to maintain a balance between the amount of calories you consume, and the amount that you burn.

Even moderate physical activity for 30 minutes each day can go an incredibly long way in maintaining your weight. In order to lose weight, one simply needs to exercise more.
