Idea #1 - Learn to Learn

What I took from this was the realisation that my priorities were not straight because I was focussing too much on improving my so called "skills". This is not necessarily a bad thing, but while doing so I was not thinking at all about improving the traits that lead to being a person who actually can improve and grow. Having traits like Ryan mentioned (Humility, self awareness, etc...) are more important then just trying to improve in one specific area because these are traits that actually allow you to be a good learner and have the ability to grow and improve

Idea #1 - My Understanding

"Talk depletes us. Talking and doing fight for the same resources. Research shows that while goal visualization is important, after a certain point our mind begins to confuse it with actual progress. The same goes for verbalization"

Idea #2 - Talk less, Do more

This has been (and still sometimes is) a problem of mine. I would always talk about the new cool thing that Im starting to whoever would listen. This created real problems for me because this verbalisation of what I was doing (or planned to do) felt like actual progress to my brain. This meant that I felt less motivated to work and to take action towards the goal because In my mind I had already done so by speaking about it. In contrast, now I only ever talk about what I'm working on to 1-2 people who are closest to me. Unless I'm far enough into the project where I feel it is safe to share

Idea #2 - My Understanding

I agree with this fully. The biggest takeaway for me from this was an idea that has been drilled into me by various people and mentors. This is the idea of teaching - to learn. There was a study which proved this point where students who were asked to learn a topic with the intention to teach it to others did better on a test then those who just studied the topic normally. This is because when our intention is to teach, we aim to understand the subject fully instead of just memorising terms and ideas. This alone has allowed me to learn and actually understand, more then I could have ever hoped

More and more companies, government agencies, educational institutions and philanthropic organisations are today in the grip of a new phenomenon: metric fixation. The key components of metric fixation are the belief that it is possible – and desirable – to replace professional judgment (acquired through personal experience and talent) with numerical indicators of comparative performance based upon standardised data (metrics); and that the best way to motivate people within these organisations is by attaching rewards and penalties to their measured performance.

Data Isn't Everything: The Plague Of Metric Fixation

The rewards can be monetary, in the form of pay for performance, say, or reputational, in the form of college rankings, hospital ratings, surgical report cards and so on. But the most dramatic negative effect of metric fixation is its propensity to incentivise gaming: that is, encouraging professionals to maximise the metrics in ways that are at odds with the larger purpose of the organisation.

Metric Fixation Starts With School

When reward is tied to measured performance, metric fixation invites just this sort of gaming. But metric fixation also leads to a variety of more subtle unintended negative consequences. These include goal displacement, which comes in many varieties: when performance is judged by a few measures, and the stakes are high (keeping one’s job, getting a pay rise or raising the stock price at the time that stock options are vested), people focus on satisfying those measures – often at the expense of other, more important organisational goals that are not measured.

Metric Based Incentives Invite Gaming

Contrary to common sense belief, attempts to measure productivity through performance metrics discourage initiative, innovation and risk-taking. The source of the trouble is that when people are judged by performance metrics they are incentivised to do what the metrics measure, and what the metrics measure will be some established goal. But that impedes innovation, which means doing something not yet established, indeed that hasn’t even been tried out. Innovation involves experimentation. And experimentation includes the possibility, perhaps probability, of failure.

Discouraging Innovation And Initiative

Compelling people in an organisation to focus their efforts on a narrow range of measurable features degrades the experience of work. Subject to performance metrics, people are forced to focus on limited goals, imposed by others who might not understand the work that they do. Mental stimulation is dulled when people don’t decide the problems to be solved or how to solve them, and there is no excitement of venturing into the unknown because the unknown is beyond the measurable.

Dumbing Down Work

Large-scale organisations of our society are the poorer for driving out staff most likely to innovate and initiate. The more that work becomes a matter of filling in the boxes by which performance is to be measured and rewarded, the more it will repel those who think outside the box.

FOMO - the fear of missing out

We are constantly comparing ourselves to people around us. While it can serve us by helping us grow, it can sometimes lead to hard feelings. FOMO is about having thoughts about missing out on opportunities which might increase our happiness. One explanation for why we experience FOMO is that we are social beings and don't want to feel left out. Instead, we can practice an abundance mindset: There are plenty of opportunities around for everyone. Instead of feeling envy, try congratulating them.

When comparing yourself to others turns toxic

Not feeling part of an event or the in-group could be enough for someone to experience a fight-or-flight response. Next time you feel a stress response to FOMO, take a moment to assess what "danger" you're really in. Then, you can talk yourself down from that fight-or-flight response.

Experiencing a bodily reaction to FOMO

Knowing what triggers your FOMO will help you get out of situations before they set off that alarm. The biggest FOMO trigger is often social media. Your trigger might be seeing yet another friend buy their first home. You can expose yourself to less of the stuff that makes you feel like you're left out.

Characteristics of intentional learning

<ul><li>Incidental learning occurs during activities where learning is not a goal for the learner. For example, when someone plays a sport just for fun, but ends up improving their skills over time.</li><li>Intentional learning involves learning as a deliberate and primary goal.</li></ul> Neither type of learning is inherently better. Each type has its own advantages and disadvantages, depending on the person and circumstances.

Intentional vs incidental learning

<ul><li>It can be more effective, such as learning an advanced mathematical concept for an exam.</li><li>It can be more efficient.</li><li>It can be more enjoyable.</li></ul> In other situations, intentional learning is less effective, efficient or enjoyable, and incidental learning is preferred.

<ul><li>Encourage the main antecedents of intentional learning, including motivation, belief in your learning ability, and recognising your need to learn.</li><li>Identify your goals, such as figuring out what concepts you’re trying to learn.</li><li>Plan your learning.  Find out where and when you will learn and which learning strategies you will use.</li><li>Actively question information that you encounter.</li></ul>

How to learn intentionally

<ul><li>Develop the antecedents of intentional learning, such as helping people recognize the need for learning.</li><li>Help learners identify their learning goals.</li><li>Help learners plan their learning. For example, figuring out where and when they’re going to learn.</li><li>Encourage the use of effective learning strategies.</li></ul>

When you look in a mirror, the face looking back at you isn't the face that everybody else sees. It's a reversed, somewhat distorted image.  The True Mirror was invented by a brother and sister team in New York. They discovered if you put two mirrors together at right angles and remove the seam, the images bounce off each other. This is what other people see when they look at you.  When you look in a regular mirror, you look for reassurance that you're beautiful, young, or tidy. When you look in a True Mirror, you see yourself differently. You look for revelation, not for reassurance.

How other people see you

When you look at truly remarkable individuals, not monetarily successful, but people achieving what they set out to do, you'll find that the one thing they have in common is that they have nothing in common. They have managed to find their unique gift and put that at the service of their goals. We often refer to these people as larger than life.  It is remarkable to see them in the full flow of their humanity. They shine, they gleam. However, most of us don't take up nearly the space the universe intended for us.

Being unique

Your job is not to copy remarkable individuals. Your task is to be as unlike them as you can possibly be. You have to be as good at being you as they are at being them. So, ask yourself, 'Who do you think you are?'  Just be yourself, because when you're yourself, you're fabulous.

Who do you think you are?

Where you were born, when you were born, and to whom you were born all have a particular influence or impact on how you become who you are.  Figure out what you expect from life and what life expects from you. A good starting point where you were fantastic at being yourself is when you were a kid under five.<ul><li>As a kid, you don't know how to disguise your differentness.</li><li>As you grow older, society's archetype emerges, and you become more self-conscious and less good at being yourself.</li><li>When you're wrinkly, you are also good at being yourself. You become less compromising and more honest.</li></ul>

How to be yourself

We are authentic when we're very young and when we're old, but in the middle, we develop the "I complex." The hourglass model helps you figure out which "I" you mean when you say "I".  <ul><li>If you have a superiority complex, you think you're the most important person in the room.</li><li>If you have an inferiority complex, you suffer from an over-modest self-regard.</li><li>Both are signs of a fragile ego.</li></ul>A third way is a made-up word called 'interiority. ' where you know that nobody can be like you. Other people have their things, but you have yours. Theirs can never compare to yours.

The hourglass effect

When you figure out how to be yourself, it's incredibly liberating. You're not just somebody's boss or somebody's mom. You're yourself. While you can never be perception-less, you can be perception-free. Tune into what you would like everybody else to think of you. It's not about being fake but about potential.

Your adaptive personality

You're already different. Your job is to figure out how and then become more of that.At certain times, your life will lend itself to change. It will make change quicker and deeper. These are intervals of possibility. You meet a stranger at a bar, or your boss offers you a new job. You know if you make the change the speed of your life will change. Some of these intervals of possibility are catastrophic. Someone you love will get sick, or you'll get sick, or you'll get fired, or a tsunami happens.

On the one extreme of your ego, you feel on top of the world. On the other extreme, you have days where nothing works. Your legs don't work, your mouth doesn't work. Your entire life is about building a stable relationship with your ego. Your challenge is to take the ego from its dominant position and put it in service to yourself. That's when it becomes useful. In order to do that, you have to find the point in the middle of those two extremes. The confidence that comes from there is what you're after.

Your ego: What you think of you

You may not be as big a message as Gandhi's but your life has to be your message. So, when you think about your identity and what it means to be alive, you're not your thoughts. You can't be your feelings. You're not what you have, nor what you do. You're not even who you love or who loves you. There's something underneath that. If you can tap into that, you'll never feel superfluous again.
