Whether it’s the weekend or an upcoming holiday break, a number of studies have shown that people who set personal goals to achieve during their time off — such as seeing friends, pursuing a hobby, or even organizing a closet — report being happier than those who don’t.
The reason this works is that it makes us more intentional about how we will spend our time away from work and not because it allows us to cross things off from yet another to-do list.

Intentional Time Spent Is Better

Employees who have holiday goals further anticipate allocating 24% less time to passive leisure activities such as watching TV, napping, or doing nothing, and 28% more time to socializing with their friends and family. 
These differences in how we plan to spend our time off matter for our well-being: Studies show that planning to spend more time with loved ones is associated with greater happiness. This is in line with one of the most consistent finding in time-use and well-being <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/21678165/">research</a> on the unique benefits of social connection.

Similar to holidays, people who have goals for their weekends are also more likely to spend their weekends pursuing social activities and less likely to spend their weekends resting or doing nothing. And spending one’s weekend engaging in social activities may in turn lead to greater happiness.
The positive effects of setting goals aren’t just limited to weekends and holidays, but can actually be tapped into on a daily basis — setting goals for how we spend our evenings can even be beneficial.

While setting goals for our time-off is important, that doesn’t mean we should treat those goals like a to-do list. We should be flexible.
<a href="https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/pdf/10.1509/jmr.14.0591?casa_token=3co9CjhhIb0AAAAA:kwErL-umQy0EvU8M7FjR4mtCaORg0mJUvCYqac6Q12rHahDHjLFkLooCZ1Zm-EnRQaSg-_VCzus">Research</a> by Gabriela Tonietto and Selin Malkoc showed that scheduling leisure activities can undermine the enjoyment people experience from such activities in part because leisure starts to feel like work. These authors found that when people scheduled leisure activities loosely, they were still able to maintain the enjoyment of leisure time.

Be Intentional About How You Spend Your Time Off

“A problem well stated is a problem half-solved.”

If we want to do things that haven’t been done or learn things that have never been learned — in short, be more creative — we must learn to ask the right questions, ones so good that they’re half-answered in the asking. And to do that, it might help to understand the process.
Warren Berger proposes a simple method in his book A More Beautiful Question; an interesting three-part system to help (partially) solve the problem of inquiry. He calls it The Why, What If, and How of Innovative Questioning. Each stage of the problem-solving process has distinct challenges and issues–requiring a different mindset, along with different types of questions.

Asking The Right Questions

Expertise is helpful at certain points, not so helpful at others; wide-open, unfettered divergent thinking is critical at one stage, discipline and focus is called for at another. 
By thinking of questioning and problem solving in a more structured way, we can remind ourselves to shift approaches, change tools, and adjust our questions according to which stage we’re entering.

A good Why? seeks true understanding. Why are things the way they are currently? Why do we do it that way? Why do we believe what we believe?
This start is essential because it gives us permission to continue down a line of inquiry fully equipped. Although we may think we have a brilliant idea in our heads for a new product, or a new answer to an old question, or a new way of doing an old thing, unless we understand why things are the way they are, we’re not yet on solid ground. We never want to operate from a position of ignorance, wasting our time on an idea that is half-baked.

Why? Questioning

The truth is that a really good Why? type question tends to be threatening. That’s also what makes it useful. It challenges us to step back and stop thinking on autopilot.
It also requires a step back from knowing — that recognizable feeling of knowing something but not knowing how you know it. This forced perspective is, of course, as valuable a thing as you can do.

All great ideas tend to be, almost by definition — by asking What If…?Berger illustrates this one well with the story of Pandora Music. The founder Tim Westergren wanted to know why good music wasn’t making it out to the masses. His search didn’t lead to a satisfactory answer, so he eventually asked himself, What if we could map the DNA of music? The Pandora story started with someone’s wondering about an unmet need. It concluded with the questioner, Westergren, figuring out a way to bring a fully realized version of the answer into the world.

What If? Questioning

Smart recombinations are all around us. Pandora, for example, is a combination of a radio station and search engine; it also takes the biological method of genetic coding and transfers it to the domain of music. In today’s tech world, many of the most successful products–Apple’s iPhone being just one notable example–are hybrids, melding functions and features in new ways.

Once we think we’ve hit on a brilliant new idea, it’s time to see if the thing actually works. Usually and most frequently, the answer is no. But enough times to make it worth our while, we discover that the new idea has legs.The most common problem here is that we try to perfect a new idea all at once, leading to stagnation and paralysis. That’s usually the wrong approach.Another, often better, way is to try the idea quickly and start getting feedback.

How? Questioning

The point is to move along the axis of Why?–What If–How? without too much self-censoring in the last phase. Being afraid to fail can often mean a great What If? proposition gets stuck there forever. Analysis paralysis, as it’s sometimes called. But if you can instead enter the testing of the How? stage quickly, even by showing that an idea won’t work, then you can start the loop over again, either asking a new Why? or proposing a new What If? to an existing Why?Thus moving your creative engine forward.

We get used to everyday things. One of the most basic ways humans learn is by a process called habituation. Our brain encodes the daily things we do into habits so we can free up space to learn new things.  Habituations is not always bad. Take learning to drive. At first, all your nervous attention is focused on the wheel, the cars, the lights, the pedestrians. but with time, it becomes easier and easier. You habituated it.Other times, habituation isn't good. It stops us from noticing the problems around us or fixing them.

The job of designers, innovators and entrepreneurs are to notice the bad things humans get used to and go one step further to fix them. It's easy to solve a problem that everyone sees. But it's hard to solve a problem almost no one sees. A product designer sees the world the way it really is, not the way we think it is.

There are invisible problems all around us, ones we can solve if we can just notice them.Tips to fight habituation:<ul><li>Look broader. When you're tackling a problem, there are often many steps that lead up to the problem. When you step back, you can change some of the stages before you get to a problem, combine them, or even remove them.</li><li>Look closer. When we focus on the little details we may otherwise not notice, ask, "Are they important, or is it the way we've always done it?" Maybe there's a better way.</li><li>Think younger. Young minds often ask tons of questions and then attempt to solve them.</li></ul>

You don't necessarily hate your job, but you’re kind of bored. Your day-to-day responsibilities have become second nature, and you no longer feel like you’re being challenged.
Then an idea smacks you in the face. Someone on the sales team is working on a new assignment you’d love to get your hands on. Or, you’ve been dying to start a company blog and no one’s taken the initiative. 
Surely your boss would let you take on an outside project if it was for the good of the company? Here’s what you need to know to get them to say yes.

Working On Another Project

Make the connection for your boss not just to how this project aligns with team or company goals, but how it’ll make you a more valuable employee. What skills will you develop? What relationships will you build? What discoveries could you make? See if anyone else can advocate for you, someone who needs the new project done on time!

Making A Convincing Case

If you can show it’ll be good for them (and not just good for yourself), you’re more likely to get their stamp of approval. An email can do the initial trick. Prepare for and address any concerns they may have. What are the counterarguments to getting this project up? How will you defend yourself when they say they’re worried about it taking up too much of your time? Or, conflicting with your other responsibilities? Or, requiring them to manage you more?

Approaching Your Boss

There is no guarantee your manager will say yes—even if you did all your homework, even if you made a solid case, even if other people back you up. Your boss has the final say on what you work on, and it’s possible this project would conflict with their expectations for the future.If you get a no, staying positive and professional may convince your boss to reconsider your request down the road. Here are some phrases to try: <ul><li>“I understand why you disagree with this and appreciate you explaining further.”</li><li>“I wasn’t aware of those changes and am glad you brought them to my attention.”</li></ul>

Understand That You Might Get a No (for Now)

Just because you can’t work on something under your boss’ eye doesn’t mean your growth has to stagnate.Maybe you can’t start a blog, but you can assist your team in writing copy for your company newsletter. Or, instead of being able to help out your colleague on the sales team, you grab a coffee to learn more about the work they’re doing. Or, maybe you take your passions outside your office—signing up for an online class or taking on a side gig.

Chip Heath is the professor of Organizational Behavior in the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University.He received his B.S. degree in Industrial Engineering from Texas A&M University and his Ph.D. in Psychology from Stanford.He co-wrote a book titled Switch How to Change Things When Change Is Hard with his brother Dan Heath.

Dan Heath is a Senior Fellow at Duke University's CASE center. Dan has an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School, and a B.A. from the Plan II Honors Program from the University of Texas at Austin.He co-wrote a book titled Switch: How to Change Things When Change Is Hard with his brother Chip Heath.

These are 4 main principles for effective study or learning: S - spacing T - testing I - interleavingC - categorizing

STIC method

If you combine these 4 principles in study, it will be much more effective than ever ever.

<ul><li>Active recall what you've learned or simply test yourself.</li></ul>testing yourself 1 is much better than rereading multiple times.<ul><li>The more you test yourself the more you remember</li></ul>

Testing 

<ol><li>You SHOULD test yourself even before you learned some topic</li><li>Test yourself before, during and after learning the specific topic</li></ol>

How Do You Test Yourself?

<ul><li>Leave the space between your topics </li><li>You probably would forget something</li><li>But after you retrieve it, you'll remember it even more than if you don't forget</li></ul>

Spacing

<ol><li>If you want to learn somethiniyg, you should put a structure and categories for information, than just learning</li><li>It's about building a tree of knowledge</li><li>Tree of knowledge is helps you understand the subject better</li></ol>

Categorizing

<ul><li class="ql-align-justify">Mix the problems of what you want to learn </li><li class="ql-align-justify">It will struggle more (it should be hards and pain in the ass) </li><li class="ql-align-justify">But it will be more easier and effective in the result</li></ul>

Interleaving

The harder you gonna get to this information remembered, the longer it will stick in your brain
