The digital marketing landscape has changed a lot. Those who are nimble and act fast tend to do well. But it takes more than an ability to be an executioner; you have to be a strategist. Luckily, there's no shortage of imaginative folks who can bring something new to the table. 
There are so many chess moves being made that it is extremely easy to take on too many things if you can't learn the art of focus or saying no.

Seeing Tasks Through

Your value proposition could as well be that you are different. Don't be afraid to lay out what sets you apart and even more importantly, let your customers know how your unique traits benefit them. In a world where companies follow up with, "We do that, too," don't be afraid to be the one saying, "That's just not us, but we do XYZ." Most likely, customers will appreciate your authenticity and genuineness.

Choose Your Lane

Stick to what you know works and have the patience to see what's a fad and what's going to stick. Working with a ton of bright-minded individuals means there's no shortage of ideas. While they all may have the legs for growth potential, find the one idea that makes the most sense for your business and see it through at least one to two quarters.

Give Each Project Enough Time

While perfection may be a good feeling when grading ourselves, zeroing in on a project too closely can actually be detrimental to success. Don't get caught up in every minor detail, as this is how time passes us by (along with our competitors). Build your timelines with a launch date and stick to it. Along the way, there may be things that will knock you off your guard rails; but with a proficient plan, your team can stick to what must be done for a successful launch. Keep the goal in sight.

Execute Until it's Nearly Perfect

Have you ever met that person who says, "I'd have a lot more success if I just had time to reflect?" Perhaps we are all guilty of falling into that bucket every now and then.  Go to the drawing board and assess what you did well with each project and what you can improve on.  The overall message is to build a strategy and stay keenly focused on closing down on it. Commit to something that you're at least 80 percent sure will bring in the new revenue, and don't let shiny object syndrome distract you from obtaining it.

Rinse, Repeat and Double Down On What Works

Stick to what you know works and have the patience to see what's a fad and what's going to stick.

“Strategy without tactics is the slowest route to victory. Tactics without strategy are the noise before defeat.”

Strategy is the overarching plan or set of goals. Tactics are the specific actions or steps you undertake to accomplish your strategy.
A personal strategy might be to get into a particular career, whereas your tactics might include choosing your educational path, seeking out a helpful mentor, or distinguishing yourself from the competition.
Without a strategy, you run the risk of ambling through life, confused about your progress. Without tactics, you become dependent on pure luck to implement your strategy.

Strategy And Tactics Are Complementary

“Without a strategy, facing up to any problem or striving for any objective would be considered negligent. Certainly, no military campaign, company investment, or government initiative is likely to receive backing unless there is a strategy to evaluate…. There is a call for strategy every time the path to a given destination is not straightforward.”

Even the most elegant, well-planned strategy is useless if we do not take thoughtful steps to achieve it. While the overall goal remains stable, the steps we take to achieve it must be flexible enough to adjust to the short-term realities of our situation.
Tactics often center around the efficient use of available resources, whether money, people, time, ammunition, or materials. Tactics also tend to be shorter-term and more specific than strategies.

Strategy vs. Tactics: Why the Difference Matters

Most people approach data the wrong way: They start with a data set, then use their favourite tools and techniques on it. This produces a narrow set of unsurprising results.
When we want to gain knowledge from the data, we should first do some thinking. Before we can answer how we first need to ask why. But this can be surprisingly challenging. The answer is to have a structure to think through all the aspects of a problem.

First why, then how

We can find structure when we create the scope for a data problem. A scope is the outline of a story of why we are focusing on this problem. The scope of a project consists of four parts, which is expressed as the mnemonic CoNVO.<ul><li>Context</li><li>Needs</li><li>Vision</li><li>Outcome</li></ul>When a problem is well-scoped, we will be able to talk about the project easily. The story will have context, conflict (the need), a resolution (the vision) and a happy ending (the outcome.) Once we have done the thinking using the CoNVO structure, we can go and collect the data.

Creating a scope for a data problem

We find context when we know who we are working with and why they're doing what they are doing. We learn the context when we talk to them about their long-term goals. The context provides a project with larger goals and helps to keep us on track. An example of context: A news organisation produces stories and editorials for a wide audience. It gets money from advertising and through premium subscriptions to its content. The final decision-maker is the head of online business.

Context (Co)

What needs could be fixed by intelligently using data? When we clearly explain a need, we are showing what could be improved by better knowledge. An example of needs:  We want to place our ads in a smart way. What should we be optimising?

Needs (N)

Vision is when we take a glimpse of what it will look like to meet the need with data. The vision consist of the following:<ul><li>A mockup explaining the intended results: It could take the form of reporting the outcome of the analysis in a few sentences, a graph, or a user interface sketch that shows how people might use a tool.</li><li>A sketch of the argument we're going to make: It is a loose outline of what we need to do to be convincing.</li></ul>

Vision (V)

The data scientist wants to know how the data and/or insights will be used. How will it be integrated into the organisation? Who will use the data, and why?An example of outcome: The marketing team needs to be trained in using the model (or software) to guide their decisions, and the success of the model needs to be gauged in its effect on the sales..

Outcome (O)

Without plans and goals, organizations merely react to daily occurrences without considering what will happen in the long run. For example, the solution that makes sense in the short term doesn't always make sense in the long term. Plans avoid this drift situation and ensure that short‐range efforts will support and harmonize with future goals.

Plans keep the people who carry them out focused on the anticipated results. In addition, keeping sight of the goal also motivates employees

Diverse groups cannot effectively cooperate in joint projects without an integrated plan. Examples are numerous: Plumbers, carpenters, and electricians cannot build a house without blueprints. In addition, military activities require the coordination of Army, Navy, and Air Force units.

Establishes a basis for teamwork.

When management plans, it can help forecast future problems and make any necessary changes up front to avoid them. Of course, surprises — such as the 1973 quadrupling of oil prices — can always catch an organization short, but many changes are easier to forecast. Planning for these potential problems helps to minimize mistakes and reduce the “surprises” that inevitably occur.

Decisions are future‐oriented. If management doesn't have any plans for the future, they will have few guidelines for making current decisions. If a company knows that it wants to introduce a new product three years in the future, its management must be mindful of the decisions they make now. Plans help both managers and employees keep their eyes on the big picture.

Planning is primary, because without knowing what an organization wants to accomplish, management can't intelligently undertake any of the other basic managerial activities: organizing, staffing, leading, and/or controlling.

Recognizing the Advantages of Planning

Here are ten things I do in the morning to make sure I have a better day – give it a shot, and you may just find yourself one step closer to feeling like a Certified Morning Person.

I know you’ve heard this a million times, but it really does make things harder. I have a much harder time waking up and feeling awake all day if I hit the snooze button on my alarm in the morning. Get up after one alarm and let yourself slowly adjust to being human again, but don’t go back to sleep – it just confuses the hell out of your body.

1. Actually don't hit snooze

You’ll thank yourself when you come home to a hot meal at the end of your long day, and thankfully, most crock-pot meals aren’t too difficult to throw together in a few minutes in the morning.

2. Put something in the slow 

True that you can do them when you get home from work, but will you want to? No. The answer is a hard no.

3. Do your dishes after breakfast.

Let it chill in there all day, then pop some coffee ice cubes in it when you hit your afternoon slump for a little pick-me-up.

4. Put your coffee leftovers in the fridge.

I know we spend a lot of time on TFD talking people out of buying pricey work lunches because it is something people are often guilty of, but to be honest, I personally get way more excited when I know I’ve packed my own little lunch that I can eat whenever I want without having to go into the outside world, seek out food, and purchase it. Put last night’s leftovers into a Tupperware container or simply throw an apple and a sleeve of Ritz crackers in your bag. Anything that gets you jazzed up works.

5. Pack yourself a little lunch.

Know of anything you’ll need at-the-ready tomorrow morning? Put it out now so you don’t have to worry about it when you get home. It’ll be one less thing for you to worry about preparing after you return from a long day at work.

6. Think ahead to tomorrow.

Working out in the morning (if you can make the time) is one of the best things you can do for your day. I’ve struggled between figuring if I would be a morning-gym-person or an afternoon/evening-gym-person before realizing and accepting that I’m just not someone who feels like working out regardless of the time of day. So I stick to doing it in the morning, because at least I have the added bonus of feeling like a healthful, accomplished badass all day post-workout.

7. Do something kind for your body.

Because it is, again, one less thing for you to do at night, and it helps you wake up and feel more energized even if you’re moping around and not wanting to go to work. I’ve tried being both a “night-shower-person” and a “morning-shower-person” before, and morning always wins. It is essentially the only way to truly wake me up and get me ready for the day, and I cannot stress how much worse I feel all day if I don’t get a chance to shower in the morning.

8. Shower.

I’m always tempted to shed my pajamas and toss them on the floor when I get dressed in the morning, but picking everything up and putting it in its proper place always makes me feel so much better. I hate coming home to clothes thrown on the floor – I’d rather take the extra few minutes to pick up after myself when I’m rushing around in the morning than deal with it all when I get home later in the day.

9. Pick up around the house.

Spend a few minutes going over your master to-do list, and picking the few items on it that are going to be prioritized today, and loosely sequencing them. As your skills improve and you learn to separate what works from what doesn’t, you have to continually increase your threshold for saying yes.

Upgrading Your No

Most of us are probably too quick to say yes and too slow to say no. It’s worth asking yourself where you fall on that spectrum.If you have trouble saying no, you may find the following strategy proposed by Tim Harford, the British economist I mentioned earlier, to be helpful. He writes, “One trick is to ask, “If I had to do this today, would I agree to it?” It’s not a bad rule of thumb, since any future commitment, no matter how far away it might be, will eventually become an imminent problem.”

How to Say No

More effort is wasted doing things that don’t matter than is wasted doing things inefficiently. And if that is the case, elimination is a more useful skill than optimization.I am reminded of the famous Peter Drucker quote, “There is nothing so useless as doing efficiently that which should not be done at all.”
