Reasons Why You Should Practice Meditation

According to science during the practice of meditation, brain scans have shown increased activity in the regions that are directly connected with the decrease of anxiety and depression. When someone practices meditation their mind goes into a Default Mode Network or in short DMN, it is a state of mind in which the mind is at rest and not worried about the outside world. This state of mind is well known for improving memory and self-awareness.

Not just this but mediation also helps one to achieve more calm. During a study, scientists studied the brains of a Buddhist monk and a young mediator. They found that the area of grey matter inside the monk’s brain was way bigger than that of the young meditator. This grey matter consists of regions that control learning, memory, and emotions in our body. To their surprise, scientists also found that the size of regions in the brain that gives rise to the increased stress and blood pressure in a human body is smaller than that of an average human brain.

During the scan, scientists found that the amount of alpha waves spread by the brain is much higher in the monk. These alpha waves have been shown to reduce the feeling of negative mood, tension, and anger. You can say meditation changes the structure of your brain and help you to become happy both physically and mentally.
