Certainly, networking requires some self-promotion; otherwise, it would be nearly impossible to determine who has similar backgrounds and interests. Unfortunately, some see networking as an opportunity to take self-promotion to the extreme, giving everyone they meet the “hard sell.”
The goal of these hard sellers is to try to impress as many people as possible by talking about themselves as much as possible. This often produces the opposite of their intended results, as many are turned off by braggarts who show little interest in others.

The Hard Seller

While hard sellers will network with anyone willing to listen to them talk about their favourite subject (themselves), self-servers are only willing to network with those who they believe can help advance their careers. Once they target someone, they may also prove to be hard sellers.
However, if self-servers discover that the person they’re speaking with doesn’t have the professional clout they originally thought, they won’t waste another second before abruptly ending the conversation and searching for someone with the credentials necessary to further their career goals.

It’s imperative to demonstrate strong communication skills from the first interaction. Job seekers who use poor grammar, talk too much or too little or appear socially awkward or reluctant to answer questions about their background may raise concerns about their ability to communicate with coworkers, managers or clients once hired. 
While socializing may pose a challenge to introverts, it’s only the first of many hurdles they must clear during the job search process.

Many people judge others on their appearance, and job seekers who attend networking events dressed sloppily or inappropriately are starting off on the wrong foot. Attire and grooming habits are often taken into account, as is the ability to give a proper handshake and personal introduction.
Also, if alcohol is served, overindulging can be seen as a red flag and could easily kill potential job offers. Job seekers should always be cognizant of how they’re being perceived by those with whom they hope to form lasting professional relationships.

The Bad First Impression

Those who fail to follow up, who call at the wrong time, or who simply forget to call prove that their reliability is questionable, and recommending them for employment becomes a risk if they were to show similar unreliability at work.
Also, sending a thank-you note to those who go out of their way to help is always a good practice, whereas failing to acknowledge their effort may appear selfish or inconsiderate.

Rigorous research across nearly a century suggests that if you try to rank the performance of a hundred candidates based on interviews, you'll be lucky if you get eight of them in the right spot. Job interviews are stuck in the past. The failings of job interviews hurt all of us. Whether we're the ones asking the questions, or answering them. We have to explore how we can improve them. Not just to help interviewers make better hiring decisions, but to give job candidates a better chance to showcase their strengths.

The interview process is broken

Candidates try to tell interviewers what they want to hear. Actually faking is more common than lying. Faking is stretching the truth to enhance or protect your image, or to ingratiate yourself with the interviewer.There's evidence that when college seniors interview for jobs, over 90 percent of them engage in faking. Maybe people aren't honest because they feel they have to be a different version of themselves.

If you're a skilled interviewer, you know you can get around people faking their expertise: by testing people's knowledge and skills. But many interviewers don't even know what kind of knowledge and skills they're looking for. So they ask brain teasers, like, "How many paperclips would fill Yankee Stadium," or "How many elevators are there in America?" Those kinds of questions can stump candidates and make interviewers feel clever.

One of the mistakes interviewers make is asking different questions to each candidate. That makes it impossible to compare apples to apples. You end up trying to contrast strawberries, bananas, and grapes. The solution is a structured interview. In a structured interview, you identify the skills and values that are essential to the job and the team. You build a set of questions around those. And then you ask the same questions to every candidate and score their responses. You might think, "That sounds so robotic," but the evidence suggests that your accuracy will often double.

Structured interviews are based on two kinds of questions: behavioral and situational. <ul><li>Behavioral questions are generally, "Tell me about a time when you were in this situation and what you did." </li><li> Situational questions are especially useful for forecasting potential, and for assessing leadership and interpersonal skills. </li></ul>

No matter how good your questions are, you still pick up more noise than signal, and one of the most distracting noises is interviewer biases. 
Interviewers make up their minds about who they're going to hire, if they like this candidate in front of them **data says in under 90 seconds**. And if you think of what happens in the first 90 seconds of a job interview, it's things like, physical attractiveness, height, eye contact, how straight your teeth are, what your voice sounds like, your gender, your race.

These ideas of this cultural fit, "Do you fit with me?" often overwhelmed people's assessments of people's abilities to do the job.
The beneficial kind of cultural fit is not about who can swap lacrosse stories with you, or even who you're excited to hang out with. Want is similarity in core values, values like flexibility, or attention to detail. Sharing values tends to promote team cohesion, coordination and commitment, which enhances performance and retention.

The calculations may be run by computers, but they're based on data generated by humans, and there's plenty of evidence that computers often learn to discriminate against marginalized groups.

This is a relevant piece of work candidates have done, or one they do as part of the application process.Work samples can be as simple as they are powerful. They can showcase the candidates' skills and values in real-time, in a concrete way that structured interviews and most algorithms can't.

Earlier this week, I had a feedback experience that shook me up a bit. I was halfway through my course preparation task for my boss’ <a href="http://buzzedison.co/">business coaching </a>brand when I decided to get feedback on what I had done. To be honest, I was really proud of what I had done so far and I was convinced my boss was going to like it too. Sike! I was wrong.My boss took one good look at the work and said it wasn’t good enough and that I had veered off the task. I was heartbroken, to say the least. The time I had invested, the research I thought I had done so well, all gone down the drain.

Experience Is The Best Teacher They Say

I refused to accept it. I tried to defend my work, tried to get him to see some good in what I was presenting. But he knew what he wanted in that course and I was nowhere near what was required.Eventually, I gave up my defending and listened to his corrections and suggestions. Honestly, at that moment, I lost hope for the task and started taking his feedback with a pinch of salt.

Later in the day (after I had taken a much-needed power nap to calm my boiling nerves) I sat down to analyze the feedback my boss had given me and realized he was right after all. I had veered off the work and I would have wasted more time on it if I hadn’t asked for his candid feedback. I started the task all over again, this time with a clearer mind, and when I went back for his feedback a second time, he found the work satisfactory.

As human beings, we never like to be in the wrong. We are more receptive to positive feedback and praise. In the world of work, however, things are not always dandy.In order to do work that matters and get results, you need to be good at accepting and giving feedback to and from your teammates, your managers, and even yourself.

We All Need To Suck It Up Sometimes

Yes, feedback is sometimes a form of criticism, but the goal is different from actual criticism.Criticism just highlights how someone or something is at fault, without giving ways it can be made better. Feedback is meant to do the exact opposite. While criticism focuses on weaknesses, feedback is meant to build strengths. Criticism deflates morale, feedback inspires. While criticism points to you as the problem, feedback finds ways to make things better.

Let’s get this clear: Feedback and criticism Are Different

I read a quote in an article on Medium that said “The value of feedback is measured at the other person’s ear, not at your mouth”. This just means that you should always be mindful of how you frame your feedback because it is meant for the receiving party, not you. And if the understanding of your feedback is muddled, it will defeat its purpose.

Giving Feedback

To give feedback that matters, you can apply the Radical Candor framework by Kim Scott. According to this framework, good feedback needs to be “care personally” but “challenge directly”. It needs to take a person’s feelings into consideration, but be straight to the point and incite the needed change. He calls this radical candor. By doing this, you can get the message across without hurting feelings or making people feel incapable.

How To Give Feedback Like A Pro

After you’ve given feedback, keep giving it and reinforcing it. Do not believe that just because you’ve told someone once that your task is complete. Your responsibility is to make sure the other party hears and understands the feedback. You must reinforce your comments and acknowledge any adjustments they make as a result of your feedback.

Being on the receiving end is twice as uncomfortable as being the giver. As I stated earlier, no one likes being told they are wrong about something. However, you need to come to terms with the fact that no one is perfect and learning is a never-ending process.Receiving feedback is just as important as giving it, if not more. It helps you to improve and get better at what you do if you are able to accept corrections and act on them.

How To Receive Feedback Like A Pro

Always remember that feedback is there to correct and improve, not to highlight mistakes. Be graceful about how you give and receive feedback and remember to apply what you receive as early as possible and follow up as often as you can, Always remember that offering feedback sometimes says something about the one taking it, but it always says something about the person giving it. First, take a look at yourself, and then give criticism.

“Suck It Up”: A Guide To Giving And Receiving Feedback Like A Pro

We tell people to think outside the box, yet we don’t function like that in our everyday life.Brainstorming is an overused technique that generates confined and limited solutions, but we can’t get enough of it. Organizations hold on to old business best practices that have since ceased to be effective without thinking of ways to recreate them.

<ol><li>Focus on quantity, not quality (Generate as many ideas as possible no matter how wild and out of the world they may seem)</li><li>Prioritise original and uncommon ideas</li><li>Defer Judgement and avoid criticism</li><li>Combine and fine-tune generated ideas</li></ol>

Brainstorming has four major components.

Alex Osborn claimed that brainstorming should enhance creative performance by almost 50% versus individuals working on their own. More than six decades after, research has shown that brainstorming hinders the creative performance of individuals in a group.

How we go about it is wrong

<ul><li>The assumption is that brainstorming is the best way to generate creative ideas as a group and the idea that we are stronger as a group than we are if we are alone.</li><li>Brainstorming is synonymous with the creative idea-generating process.</li><li>A method for organizations to use employees‟ creativity as a way of improving productivity</li></ul>

Why do organizations engage in brainstorming activities?

Think outside the box, don’t limit yourself, go as wild as you can, every idea is welcome. Common chants by managers encourage people to think creatively and come up with creative ideas. But it does not work. Most people cannot function at their peak without some form of structure and tangibility.

Without direction, most people are uncertain if their line of thinking is in alignment with the overall ambiguous goal or do they chart a new course altogether. The ambiguity of the task will make them shut down.

Organizations need to redesign how they organise and conduct brainstorming sessions to get the desired results.

Have we been brainstorming all wrong?

Re-engineer the Process:<ul><li>Imagine a room of 20 people with a very intimidating leader. His presence in the brainstorming session would limit the free flow of ideas or make people reluctant to share what they might presume to be a silly idea. Or a brainstorming process moderator who just showed up to a brainstorming session with no form of preparation or understanding of the business goals.</li><li>We can adjust the process to increase the chance of success. Define what ideas are acceptable, and structure your questions in that fashion.</li></ul>

Remodel your brainstorming sessions.

Put all the opinionated people (Those who like to control the direction of a meeting) in one group. If you have a brainstorming session with a group of 16 people, and 4 of those people like to dominate conversations, but them in one group, and have three other groups.Provide some incentive for active participation. The goal is to get 100% of the participants to work at 100% of their capacity 100% of the session.

Make sure everyone is involved

Do not rely on just one brainstorming session.A brainstorming session must end on a good note, with all participants knowing that the result of their efforts will lead to action. Prioritise the ideas at the session, don’t leave it for another day. If you don’t get to the action immediately, you might end up not doing anything about it.Once you have sorted the ideas, have another brainstorming session to harness the ideas.

The author reminds us that companies don't want to invest in you anymore. Hence take the trainings and learnings into your own hands. Plan it the way you would plan a curriculum. Be prepared to be in permanent "beta" state and learn continuously.

Invest In Yourself

Find a skill that is based on what you are good at, that which gives you joy and that which will pay you. These three parameters will tell you if you will survive in a job in the long term.

Assets, Aspirations & Market Realities

You do not have to be the best in the world. It is sufficient to be the best in your organization, in your timezone, in your industry segment. Pick a hill that has less competition.

All Advantages Are Local

The author says, "your career success depends on both your individual capabilities and your network's ability to highlight them". When you want to create a connection, do not think, "how can that person help me?". Instead, think, "how can I help that person?". In corporate careers, the connections are not transactinal. You will have to build relationship for years to see the fruits.

Network

You will not find good fortune accidentally. You will have to make efforts to be in the right place at the right time. It takes hard work, smart work and good network for opportunity to knock on your door. When you have no resources, create them.

It's not enough for you just to focus on results, you have to build a team that's results-oriented too. To do that, be clear with your team about what their goals and end results should be,  explain what you're trying to achieve and why it's important. Make yourself available for any questions or clarifications to ensure everybody is on the same page.

This can be done in a three-part process: <ul><li>Identify the key skills the salesperson will need to help them make their quota. These skills should be things that are highly relevant to your product or service.</li><li>Teach your new recruits these key skills (attend calls with them and watch them perform, give them audio programs to listen to, send them to sell seminars, or conduct your own.)</li><li>Continue checking in with your salespeople over time to reinforce what you've taught.</li></ul>

3 Ways to Practice Empathetic Leadership with a Virtual Team

A meeting cadence is how often a meeting is held. For example, if you and a direct report check in every Friday morning, that’s a weekly cadence. If you have a request to meet every other month, that’s a bimonthly cadence.
The challenge for every company is how frequently meetings should take place. In an increasingly distributed workforce where a face-to-face Zoom is sometimes the only interactions you’ll have with your team, these are often overscheduled in the hopes that these “in person” meetings will be beneficial to building relationships and team morale.

You want your team to know what everyone is working on, but you also want to allow for enough freedom for everyone to work autonomously.  Here are a few examples of some common meetings and how frequently they might meet. <ul><li>One-on-One Meetings: Weekly meeting cadence</li><li>All Hands: Quarterly meeting cadence</li><li>Daily standup meeting: Every day</li><li>Leadership Teams: Monthly meeting cadence</li></ul>

Five Questions To Ask Before Making a New Meeting Request

Once you’ve determined that you’ve got a weekly cadence for one project and another weekly cadence for an all-staff check-in, that doesn’t mean these have to be formatted in the same way. You have to decide if the meeting is information seeking or information giving, which we alluded to earlier. This matters a lot when you’re determining how to best check-in.
