How Are Compliments Not Accepted ?

The person may ignore the compliment altogether, pretending that it was not heard. Compliment: “That hat looks good on you.”Response: “Where do you want to eat lunch?” Or, the remark may not be recognized as a compliment.Compliment: “I’d like you to head the new department.”Response: “Don’t you like the work I’m doing in my current position?”

Ignoring

The person may void the compliment by contradicting it. Compliment: “You look great today.”Response: “No, I don’t. I look awful.”

Denial

The receiver may argue with the person giving the compliment to show that the compliment was misplaced. Compliment: “Your project really turned out well.”Response: “Nah. The attendance was lower than I projected, we didn’t make as much money as we could have, and the elephant was too fat.”

Arguing

The receiver may joke with the other person, failing to fully receive the compliment in the way it was meant. Compliment: “Listen, I really appreciate the help that you gave me when my mother was so sick.” Response: “Oh right, like I had anything better to do!”

Joking

The receiver may try to balance the positive feedback with self-imposed insults. Compliment: “You made great time on that last hill.”Response: “I guess it wasn’t too bad for a fat old guy.”

Self-insult

The receiver questions the judgment of the giver. Compliment: “You sang beautifully.”Response: “Why would you think that? You must be deaf.”

Questioning

The receiver accepts a smaller version of the compliment than was intended. Compliment: “You look terrific.”Response: “It’s these socks my sister gave me.”

Narrowing

The receiver quickly returns the compliment.Compliment: “You were funny tonight.”Response: “You, on the other hand, are hilarious every night.”

Ideally, we can choose to always do what we love without ever needing to think about the things we don’t like. That, unfortunately, is not the case in real world. There are times when we need to do something we don’t like. Just think of the time when you were in school or college. While there were some modules you liked, there were usually also some modules you didn’t like. But you needed to work your way through all of them, not just the ones you liked.

How to Enjoy What You Are Doing No Matter What

Often, we need to do something we don’t like as a part of something larger which will give us big benefit in the future. For example, we take the modules we don’t like in college because it will eventually earn us a degree that gives us the opportunity to get a good job. It is unlikely that we need to do something we don’t like if there is no long-term benefit involved. By looking at the long-term benefit you will eventually acquire, the activity won’t look as bad as it is.

1. Look at the long-term benefit

I believe there is always something we can learn from every experience. If we can’t find one, that’s maybe just because we are too focused on the negative side rather than the positive. For example, European History which Joel talked about may help us learn from thousands of years of experiences so that we do not need to repeat the same mistakes people did. Besides, it can give us more potential common ground to connect with new people (especially with those who like history). If you really can’t find any, at least the experience teaches you to be persistent in any situation.

2. Find what you can learn from it

Love is a strong source of motivation. If you do something for someone you love, it’s very likely that you can stand even the most boring activity and even enjoy the process. So keep in mind that you do not do this for yourself, but for someone you love.

3. Think of doing it for someone you love

Your source of fun and enjoyment is not just the activity, but also the interaction with the people there. While the activity itself might not be very exciting, there might be a lot of rich experiences you can get from the interaction with the people. That’s also one reason to enjoy what you are doing.

4. Enjoy the interaction with the people

If you keep thinking or saying that you don’t like an activity, there is no way you can enjoy it. Always think and say something positive. The points above helps you find positive things you can think and say about. You may think of the long-term benefit you will get, or the nice interaction you have with the people. Focus on these positive things; don’t ever think or say something negative..

<ol><li>Have a written hiring process and ensure everyone has a paper copy of it. Many startups have a random hiring process and hire randomly.</li><li>Do basic skills tests. Ask them basic questions about how to do things in their domain. For a sales rep, have them sell you on your product all the way to a closed deal. For a marketing person, have them whiteboard out a launch for your new product. </li><li>Plan out and write down interview questions.</li><li>Pay attention to the little details during the interview process to show what the person will be like.</li><li>Pay attention to the small things during the reference calls.</li></ol>

<ul><li>Know that while you're going to hate firing someone, you'll feel way better after the fact.</li><li>Realise that the great people on your team will be happy that you've done it as they knew the person wasn't working out. I have invested countless hours becoming an expert in my field. This is essential because nearly all public speaking gigs include time for questions. Many speakers aren’t prepared for the random, wide-ranging questions they get and so Q&A can be awkward. I make sure that I know my subject so well I can answer almost every question. If I don’t know the answer, I say, “I don’t know” instead of guessing or estimating.

Become an expert.

My logistical skills are lacking, so two brilliant women cross every T and dot every I for me, and I’m atrocious at salary negotiation, so I have a savvy manager who handles that part with grace and professionalism. Don’t assume that you can do an hour of reading on the internet and suddenly become as good at social media as someone with years of experience. Find an expert and treat them well. Also, once you hire an expert, let them do their job. If you hire a PR professional and you get an email asking you to do a podcast interview, forward it to your PR rep. Don’t interfere with their work.

Hire experts. 

Your slide presentation should be mostly pictures, no complicated graphs or charts, and easily read from the back of a ballroom.

Keep it simple.

Talk about the mistakes that have led you to insight. Otherwise, your talk can come across as 45 minutes of unsolicited advice and, take it from a conversational expert, no one likes unsolicited advice.

Be humble.

Be on time or early, deliver what you promised, and ask lots of questions to make sure you understand what’s needed. Dress professionally and be kind to everyone you meet. That’s good advice for life, I think, but especially for situations in which you might be at a conference in Tampa and not realize that the person in flip flops getting lemonade is actually the president of the company.

Be reliable.  

No matter what your subject matter, your talk should have a beginning, a middle, and an end. Human beings learn best through stories and most of our history was passed on verbally. Reading is a recent innovation. So, write a script that is meant to be heard and not read. No long sentences with subordinate clauses; no excessive adjectives and technical terms. That’s not how people talk and it shouldn’t be how you speak.

Fly in the night before. I used to try to arrive in the morning if I had an evening engagement, so that I could keep the trip as short as possible. That strategy quickly becomes disastrous though, because of bad weather, late planes, and missed connections. Just fly in the night before and get a full night’s sleep. You want to be rested and relaxed when you’re speaking to large groups of people. On the same note, don’t check bags. No need to take unnecessary chances like that.

Get there early.
