In his sixty-two years Walter Anderson was stupendously productive. He created much of his art in obscurity, and only after his death in 1965 did the magnitude of his labors and genius come to light. His works teem in the thousands and take many forms-watercolors, oil paintings, drawings, block prints, figurines, pottery, and murals. He produced more than ten thousand pen-and-ink illustrations, as well as poems, stories, journals, and letters. Bringing together more than 175 full-color images, including works never before shown to the public, this catalog places Anderson in the context of his peers in twentieth-century American art and portrays him both as a major artist and a renaissance man. He was born in New Orleans in 1903, graduated from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and spent his life on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. He and his two brothers became artists under the guidance of their mother. Peter and Mac established Shearwater Pottery, and Walter created murals for the community of Ocean Springs. Walter Anderson was absorbed by poetry, music, art history, and natural science. A loner, he found his identity in the wilderness of pine savannahs and barrier islands along the coast. It was this natural wild that most imbued his art. To honor Anderson on his centennial, this representative sampling of his work reveals him as an eccentric genius who explored the profound order of creation and made spiritual excursions into the terra incognita of the mind and inner self. The contributors to this volume include noted art historians and curators from the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York and the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the daughter of Walter Anderson, and research staff at the Walter Anderson Museum of Art. For example, shorter words are used in different languages more often than longer ones. Biologists have noticed this, and many have wondered whether these linguistic laws apply to biological phenomena. Indeed, a new review published in Trends in Ecology and Evolution discusses their findings in detail.

Linguists have long known that human speech seems to be governed

The first linguistic rule concerns the frequency of a language's most frequently used words. This is known as Zipf's rank-frequency law and holds that the relative frequency of a word is inversely proportional to its frequency rank. In other words, the most frequently used word will be twice as often as the second most commonly used word, three times as often as the third most frequently used word, and so on. For example, the most common word in English is seven percent of all the words we use. The next most common is about 3.5 percent.

Formula 1: twice the size of the nearest rival 

The second linguistic rule we can apply to life is Zipf's law of abbreviation, which describes the tendency for more commonly used words to become shorter. This applies to hundreds of different and unrelated languages, including sign language. In English, the seven most common words are three letters or less, and there are only two words in the top 100 (people and therefore) that have more than five letters. The words we use most often are short and to the point.

Pattern 2: more minor things are more common

Communication between birds and mammals tends to be short. Indeed, it can be seen in the songs of black-headed tits, the duration of the calls of Formosa macaws, the vocalizations of the indri, the timing of chimpanzees' gestures, and the length of surface behavioral patterns in dolphins. Humans are not the only ones who want their language to be effective.

Take a sentence such as this one, with all its words, long and short, joined together, punctuated by commas, sunk into each other to reach the final (and breathtaking) finale. It should be noted that although a sentence is long, it is divided into relatively small sentences. This is known as Menzerath's law, in which there is a negative relationship between the size of the whole and the size of the parts. This can be seen not only in sentence construction; the law applies to short phonemes and syllables found in long words.

Part 3: the longer something is, the shorter its composite parts

Although the article focuses mainly on these three laws, it points to others that can still be found (those that are so far under-researched and understudied). For example, Herdan's law (the correlation between the number of unique words and text length) is evident in the proteomes of many organisms, and Zipf's law of meaning frequency (in which more common words have more meanings) is evident in primates. And organizational cultures are pushing them to keep the collaborative flow going and increase responsiveness. The intention behind this concept is good, but in practice, it kills productivity. That is because we are wired to only focus on one thing at a time. And keeping many tabs open and working with information in the back of our mind just doesn’t sit well with the prefrontal cortex. The result? Decreased attention, a lack of focus, and increased stress levels.

Emails are outdated project assignation tools, and for a reason. They decrease the attention span by keeping employees hooked to a constantly open tab. Not only that, but they also get messy and unstructured.

Lesson 2: To improve productivity, we have to switch to project management execution apps instead of emails.

Instead, business thinkers like Peter Drucker have better ideas when it comes to improving the workflow. Drucker acknowledged two types of work: the knowledge workers and the factory-type workers. Factory-type workers are most efficient when they divide their work into smaller chunks and are responsible for their own small area of activity. With knowledge workers, things get a bit more complicated, because you can’t tell them how to be creative, but you can’t monitor them and inhibit their creative thinking.

However, what you can do is interfere with the way they do things or their framework. Apps like Trello or Flow are specialized in assigning tasks and they limit the use of email to a great extent. This is great news because as we all know, emails do inhibit productivity. Make sure to include employees in the workflow change and give them autonomy in their decisions. Always double-check with them to see if they like and agree with the changes and what tasks they’d like to receive.

Emails are a great means of communication, but what happens when we don’t know what to communicate? Most of the time, they get in the way of productivity. The problem with emails is that people feel productive writing and reading them when they’re in fact not productive at all.Many times over management agents noticed how people pass around tasks and explanations because no one really knows how to deal with them. The triple filter test refers to an anecdote of the great Greek philosopher, Socrates. The story tells that, one day, one of Socrates’ disciples was quite agitated. He told Socrates that he had just met one of Socrates’ friends and that he had spoken badly of him.Socrates asked the man to calm down. After thinking for a moment, he asked him to wait a minute. Before listening to what he had to say, he told him, the message had to go through a triple filter test. If the message didn’t pass the test, it wasn’t worthy of being heard.

The “Worthy Of Being Said/Heard” Test

As he always did, the Greek philosopher asked his anxious disciple a question: “Are you absolutely sure that what you’re going to tell me is true?” The disciple thought for a moment. In fact, he couldn’t be sure if what his friend had told him was actually malicious. It was a matter of perspective. “So you do not know if everything he said about me is true or not,” said the philosopher. The disciple had to admit that he didn’t.

Filter #1: Is It True?

Then, Socrates asked him a second question:“Is what you’re going to tell me good or not?” The disciple replied that, evidently, it wasn’t good at all. In fact, it was quite the opposite. He believed that what he was going to share with the philosopher would cause him discomfort and distress. Thus, Socrates said to him: “You’re going to tell me something bad, but you’re not completely sure it’s true”. The disciple admitted that this was the case.

Filter #2: Is It Good?

Then, Socrates asked the third and final question: “Is what you have to say about my friend going to help me in any way?” The disciple hesitated. He really didn’t know if that information was useful or not. Maybe it would distance him from his friend, but considering that he wasn’t sure whether it was true or not, maybe it wasn’t useful at all.

Filter #3: Is It Useful?

In the end, the philosopher refused to listen to what his disciple wanted to tell him. “If what you want to tell me isn’t true, isn’t good, and isn’t even useful, why would I want to hear it?” he finally told his disciple.Truth, goodness, and usefulness are the foundation of Socrates’ triple filter test. Socrates thought that a person must ask themselves the following questions before they say anything: “Am I sure that what I am going to say is true?”, “Is what I’m going to say a good thing?”, and “Do I really need to say it and is it useful?”

In everyday life, it’s not easy to define the true, the good, and the necessary. These are abstract concepts that are sometimes difficult to apply. That’s why there are also some additional questions that can help us when it comes to applying the triple filter test.

The triple filter test is particularly oriented at rumors or gossip. Applying it allows us to put a stop to annoying gossip and rumors that sometimes haunt us, such as those we see in social networks. But, more importantly, the test is a great life lesson and an excellent guide, for anything and everything that we’re going to say and for anything and everything that we’re going to listen to.

The Logic of False Beliefs

Convincing someone to change their mind is the process of convincing them to change their tribe. If they abandon their beliefs, they run the risk of losing social ties. You can’t expect someone to change their mind if you take away their community too. You have to give them somewhere to go. Nobody wants their worldview torn apart if loneliness is the outcome. The way to change people’s minds is to become friends with them, integrate them into your tribe, and bring them into your circle. Now, they can change their beliefs without the risk of being abandoned socially.

Years ago, Ben Casnocha mentioned an idea to me that I haven't been able to shake: The people who are most likely to change our minds are the ones we agree with on 98 percent of topics.If someone you know, like, and trust believes a radical idea, you are more likely to give it merit, weight, or consideration. You already agree with them in most areas of life. Maybe you should change your mind on this one too. But if someone wildly different than you proposes the same radical idea, well, it's easy to dismiss them as a crackpot.

The Spectrum of Beliefs

There is another reason bad ideas continue to live on, which is that people continue to talk about them.Silence is death for any idea. An idea that is never spoken or written down dies with the person who conceived it. Ideas can only be remembered when they are repeated. They can only be believed when they are repeated.I have already pointed out that people repeat ideas to signal they are part of the same social group. But here's a crucial point most people miss: People also repeat bad ideas when they complain about them. Before you can criticize an idea, you have to reference that idea.

Why False Ideas Persist

Why do you want to criticize bad ideas in the first place? Presumably, you want to criticize bad ideas because you think the world would be better off if fewer people believed them. In other words, you think the world would improve if people changed their minds on a few important topics.If the goal is to change minds, then I don't believe criticizing the other side is the best approach. Most people argue to win, not to learn.

The Intellectual Soldier

The brilliant Japanese writer Haruki Murakami once wrote, “Always remember that to argue, and win, is to break down the reality of the person you are arguing against. It is painful to lose your reality, so be kind, even if you are right.”When we are in the moment, we can easily forget that the goal is to connect with the other side, collaborate with them, befriend them, and integrate them into our tribe. We are so caught up in winning that we forget about connecting. It's easy to spend your energy labeling people rather than working with them.

Be Kind First, Be Right Later
