The modern schooling system is known to prevent people from acquiring the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in today's world. Before children start school, they learn at a mind-blowing speed. They learn how to walk, run, jump and climb. They become fluent in one or more languages and use those languages to assert their will, argue, ask questions, be funny, make friends, and make sense of their world. They manage to do all this without any curriculum, tests, grades, or schooling structure. However, when we introduce a school structure, children's learning decrease dramatically.

Children learn naturally (without schooling)

Children are instinctively predisposed to educate themselves. Watch any child left alone with an iPhone, and you can see the drive to self-education. Learning drives are:<ul><li>Curiosity drives the child to know what the apparatus is, how it works, and what they can do with it.</li><li>Playfulness causes the child to examine the apparatus. They pass it from hand to hand, turn it over, rub it, shake it, drop it, throw it. They are running little experiments to test the apparatus' properties and capabilities.</li><li>Sociability drives the child to talk to people about this fascinating apparatus.</li></ul>

The educative instinct

Hundreds of studies conducted with children show that they gaze longer at new scenes than familiar ones. They look longer at events that they find intriguing and lose interest as soon as there is nothing new to learn from it. Children are relentlessly drawn toward anything that runs counter to expectations.

Curiosity: The drive to explore and understand

After the curiosity drive leads a child to a new toy or situation, playfulness takes over. Without that curiosity, we wouldn't try out anything new. Without playfulness, we wouldn't become skilful at anything. Research found that the shift from exploration to play is one from a focused serious expression to a more relaxed, smiling one. This understanding of play's biological purpose explains why young animals play more than older animals.

Playfulness: The drive to practice and create

Education is cultural transmission. That is how each new generation acquires and builds upon the skills, knowledge, lore, and values. Without sociability, there's no education. Without sociability, you eliminate the two most important forms of learning:<ol><li>Observation. In most societies, children first learn culturally relevant skills by watching and mimicking their elders.</li><li>Age mixing. Teaching and learning go both ways. Interaction with younger children teaches older ones new skills they wouldn't know otherwise.</li></ol>

Sociability: The drive to share information and ideas

It is nothing short of a miracle that the modern methods of instruction have not yet entirely strangled the holy curiosity of inquiry; for this delicate plant, aside from stimulation, stands mainly in need of freedom; without this it goes to wreck and ruin without fail. It is a very grave mistake to think that the enjoyment of seeing and searching can be promoted by means of coercion and a sense of duty.

Schools teach children that learning is work. Children are told to "do what you are told." School is not an environment that promotes exploration and discovery but is set for indoctrination. Instead of following their curiosity, students learn to jump through hoops and check off boxes. Worst, children learn to ignore their innate curiosity.

The limitations of school:<ul><li>Children are confined to a largely unchanging environment.</li><li>They are not free to pursue their interests in self-directed ways.</li><li>Children are continuously evaluated so that instead of exploring, discovering, and failing, they learn to be concerned with evaluation and pleasing the teacher.</li></ul> Researchers repeatedly observed that children ask questions about rules and requirements, not the subject itself. The teachers ask questions, and the students guess the answers. When children show interest, the teacher often cuts them off, so they don't fall behind.

Schools kill the playfulness drive

School teaches selfishness, not sociability.When students are evaluated for their learning and compared to other students, they learn to only look out for themselves. If you have the drive to share information and ideas, you're not allowed to bring them into school. Sharing information and ideas is known as "cheating."

Sudbury Valley is a private day school founded by Daniel Greenberg located in a semi-rural part of Massachusetts. He wondered why there couldn't be an educational system that helps students develop passionate interests and then pursue those interests. So Greenberg founded such a school. The basic premise of the school’s educational philosophy is that each person is responsible for his or her own education.

Creativity arises as a result of being able to think through different situations at once, it requires a healthy mindset and energy. It is about how distinctive and unique your imagination can be, you are able to think through situations to a situation. A person with lesser creativity will have think about x and y as the results, whereas a person who is highly creative might have a, b, c, x, y and z as the result.

Creativity can be kindled and it is one of the best value add skills you might want to have in you. A creative mindset is built over a period of time. There is a little effort required from you to work on it, you might have to think through the situations come up with different variants of understanding from the same situation and there is something with the way you look at the world. Creativity flourishes with a sound mindset and needs lot of energy.

Perfectionists might be expected to be short on creativity since creativity requires being flexible and open to mistakes. But perfectionists might also be expected to be high in creativity since creative pursuits call for perseverance and commitment — qualities that are typical of perfectionists.

A team of researchers from the University of Ottawa proposed that these contrasting expectations might be explained by a distinction between striving for excellence and perfection. Their reasoning was based on a theory developed by one of the study authors called the Model of Excellencism and Perfectionism (MEP).

Similarly, being overly doubtful of their actions may impede their cognitive engagement and concentration.

“Striving for perfection over and above excellence is likely to limit experimentation, spontaneity, and openness,” the study authors wrote. “Relaxing the perfection constraint means changing the narrative so that it becomes ‘okay if it isn’t always perfect’ (Nordin-Bates, 2020, p. 31). As such, our findings suggest that excellencism could be a suitable alternative to the pursuit of perfectionistic standards.”

“Many questions need to be addressed,” Goulet-Pelletier explained. “Our study did not specifically identify which mechanism explained the detrimental effect of perfectionism on creative thinking abilities. Another line of questioning is to understand what happens when creativity is needed to reach perfection?”

The authors note that their studies employed only a small number of creative and associative tasks, which may have compromised the generalizability of their findings. Trying to predict what the future will look like is doomed to fail. Yet this is what most executives do when they strategize. They — we — do this because we have been trained and educated to use trends and statistics to predict what is likely to happen and prepare accordingly. Nor does it limit strategy conversations to the C-suite; in fact a core component is the participation of a wide range of stakeholders. Consequently, the teams that we’ve seen deploy design fiction are able to formulate and shape desirable futures that other tools do not enable people to see.

Design Fiction

The first step of putting design fiction into practice involves crafting scenarios of possible futures. For example, in a project with a major car insurance company, we analyzed information from urban mobility trends, autopilot flight modes, Luc Besson’s notorious movie The Fifth Element, and interviews with early electric car adopters to develop scenarios of possible futures. These atypical data sources help spotlight less obvious aspects that would otherwise remain unnoticed in the strategizing process.

Creating Scenarios From Pop Culture

Design fiction has helped dozens of multinational companies to strategize differently. And while creating fictional futures may sound a little quirky, we know that it works. For example, a recent design-fiction project conducted with a major oil and gas company helped identify how to shape a future in which people living in remote areas were less socially isolated. The company decided to repurpose gas stations into places galvanizing community through services such as car sharing hubs, medical centers, delivery platforms, and ghost kitchens.
