Socrates is considered the creator of classical Greek philosophy. He is famous for engaging in debates with the 2 types of wise people of the day:<ul><li>material philosophers who tried to explain what the world is made of</li><li>sophists, interested only in rhetoric and not in truth.</li></ul>He believed wisdom has to have relevance for the individual. While the materialists focused on truth and less on relevance, the sophists were only concerned with relevance while ignoring truth.Socrates believed the person needs a philosophy that is both relevant & truthful.

Socrates was named the "wisest man alive" by the Delphi oracle. Which not only confused Athenians, because the guy was acting like a homeless person, but Socrates himself. He knew that his wisdom is limited, but he also believed the gods could not lie. So his solution was to say "I know that I know nothing"Socrates meant that only knowing the limitations of knowledge, you can transcend. You need to understand the limits of your cognition so you can evolve.

“Stupidity is a more dangerous enemy of the good than evil.”

“The power of the one needs the stupidity of the other. The process at work here is not that particular human capacities, for instance, the intellect, suddenly atrophy or fail. Instead, it seems that under the overwhelming impact of rising power, humans are deprived of their inner independence, and, more or less consciously, give up establishing an autonomous position toward the emerging circumstances. The fact that the stupid person is often stubborn must not blind us to the fact that he is not independent.

“In conversation with him, one virtually feels that one is dealing not at all with a person, but with slogans, catchwords and the like that have taken possession of him. He is under a spell, blinded, misused, and abused in his very being. Having thus become a mindless tool, the stupid person will also be capable of any evil and at the same time incapable of seeing that it is evil.”

“It is a particular form of the impact of historical circumstances on human beings, a psychological concomitant of certain external conditions. Upon closer observation, it becomes apparent that every strong upsurge of power in the public sphere, be it of a political or of a religious nature, infects a large part of humankind with stupidity.”

“When your deepest convictions are challenged by contradictory evidence, your beliefs get stronger.”

“The sick individual finds himself at home with all other similarly sick individuals. The whole culture is geared to this kind of pathology. The result is that the average individual does not experience the separateness and isolation the fully schizophrenic person feels. He feels at ease among those who suffer from the same deformation; in fact, it is the fully sane person who feels isolated in the insane society.”

“The mass of people are so stupid, so gullible, because they want to be misled. There’s no way to make them not want it. You have to work with the human race as it exists, with all of its flaws. Getting them to see reason is a fool’s errand.”

“But these thoughts about stupidity also offer consolation in that they utterly forbid us to consider the majority of people to be stupid in every circumstance. It really will depend on whether those in power expect more from people’s stupidity than from their inner independence and wisdom.”

Bonhoeffer’s Theory of Stupidity Explains The World Perfectly

The axial revolution, manifested in Judea, led to the development of a religion that presents time as a form of cosmic history. As a narrative with an open feature. In which you participate alongside God in the realization of that ideal.This progress is charged actualized through faith in this linear version of time. This idea was groundbreaking: it looked at the time as an infinite progression, rather than the circular time of the shaman traditions (Hindus are another example).

From circular to linear time

Today we look at the early Jewish faith as a "belief in silly things". But that misses the mark, as it focuses on the supernatural part of the narrative.Faith was a sense of progression, at an individual level but more importantly at a macro level. Faith allowed a person to guide himself towards an ideal, it gave meaning to his existence. A path to the promised land. Sin, in this regard, means a deviation from that path.

Myths are not widely believed false stories about the ancient past. They are symbolic stories about perennial patterns that are always with us. Myths describe deep truths presented in a narative that allows sharing them.

Ep. 3 - Awakening from the Meaning Crisis - Continuous Cosmos and Modern World Grammar

Why did his winning adversaries choose to isolate him on an island? Twice. At the time, killing a king (which the French just did during the Revolution) was considered dangerous. It created unrest in the population and would give "bad ideas" to the mob. Napoleon's adversaries were monarchs who cared for the second-order effects of his execution.But why did they think of Napoleon as a king? He was a commoner after all, even though he declared himself Emperor. Mainly because Napoleon was still loved by the French people, especially the military. They didn't want to stir another rebellion.

Now that I think of it, I was always curious about it. But somehow never got to ask...

Napoleon Bonaparte, thought to be one of the most influential and polarizing men in history, was, after his abdication in 1814 and again in 1815, exiled rather than executed. One might wonder why? On the surface the monarchies of Europe did have their reasons to do so. After all he was the man who sought to bring the British economy to its knees, implementing the so called Continental system, the man who on more than one occasion embarrassed the Austrian and especially the Prussian military, thought to be at the time the mightiest land army in the world, he was a person first admired by tsar Alexander but would later be branded as a tyrant and an enemy of the orthodox faith by the same man. Not the mention the countless lives lost, the destruction of Moscow as a consequence of Russia’s scorched earth policy, and the invasion of Spain who was at the time an ally of France. But above anything else he was a man that completely disrupted the balance of power in Europe. He would endanger the hegemony of the British empire up to that time. And while he was alive there was always a possibility that he would to do so again. Why was Napoleon exiled and not executed?

Implicit learning refers to the process of acquiring knowledge about the structure of the environment without conscious awareness. Like how we learn to ride the bike. Explicit learning is a conscious operation where the individual makes & tests hypotheses in a search for structure. Like how we learn math.During the Palaeolithic times, knowledge was 100% implicit. There was no abstract thought, patterns were recognised intuitively and expressed in metaphors. Shamanic rituals was how knowledge was passed around. The Axial Revolution will introduce abstract thought & explicit learning.

Archaic Learning: Implicit, Intuitive, Metaphorical

Creativity is when different parts of your brain connect. It's what happens when we are in a state of flow, during meditation or in psychedelic experiences.Metaphors is how we do that in language. Most of our language is metaphorical. We ask "Do you see what I am saying". We say "Hope this is not hard for you" or "This is the middle of my talk". Most of what we say are metaphors.Metaphorical thought, your ability to make analogies, is a measure of a good problem solver. The smart people make interesting connections.

The power of metaphors

Is the period after the Bronze Age, when at the same time around the world, the great intellectual, philosophical, & religious systems that came to shape subsequent human society emerged—with the ancient Greek philosophers, Indian gurus (creators of of Hinduism & Buddhism), Persian Zoroastrianism, the Hebrew Prophets, the “Hundred Schools” (Confucianism & Daoism) of ancient China.The phrase originated with the German philosopher Karl Jaspers, who noted that during this period there was a shift—away from more predominantly localized concerns and toward transcendence.

Axial Revolution

Transcendence means “to go beyond.” In the case of the Axial “revolution”, “going beyond” has several meanings:<ul><li>a shift to thinking about the cosmos and the way it works rather than taking for granted that it works</li><li>the rise of second-order thinking about the ways that human beings operate, realising both that we are lying to ourselves and that we can improve ourselves. </li></ul>It's why the transcendent thinkers of the Axial Age: Buddha, Plato etc ... are still relevant today.

Second order thinkers ask themselves the question “And then what?” It is a form of meta-cognition that allows for investigation of our own thinking.It became a thing during the Axial Revolution, when writing allowed us to store our thoughts, reflect on them and communicate with others across time and space.

As people started trading more and more during the ancient times, money became used. And coinage was a massive cognitive upgrade:<ul><li>Money popularises abstract thought. Accepting an abstract representation of value was a massive shift for the time.</li><li>Money makes people think mathematically. </li></ul>

Ep. 2 - Awakening from the Meaning Crisis - Flow, Metaphor, and the Axial Revolution

John Vervaeke teaches cognitive sciences University of Toronto. Similar to his Canadian colleague, Jordan Peterson, he became popular through his Youtube channel, where he explores deep philosophical ideas. In 50 hour-long episodes, Vervaeke analyses the crisis of meaning (which he describes as a pervasive feeling of alienation from the world and from each other). To get to the bottom of the meaning crisis he puts in context various historical philosophical schools of thought, combining them with cognitive sciences and much more.

To seek our purpose in the world is a human pursuit for millennia. For Vervaeke, the meaning in life is found in wisdom. But the modern world has distanced us from the goalpost and Vervaeke points out spikes in depression, suicide rates, and social unrest.But while things look bleak the public seems to be much more interested in topics related to meaning: mindfulness, stoicism, psychedelic ... all of these weird Hippie interests points to a revival of the meaning conversation.

The meaning of life in the 21st century

Humans existed for 200-300 thousand years. But 40,000 BC something happened. Humans started living in settlements. And they started to make ... art. Sculptures, paintings, and even music.This is the period where humans have an upgrade to their cognitions. They invent abstract tools like the calendar or projectile weapons.Meaning began when our ancestors started to complement their tech with psycho technologies to allow them to deal with the environment but also with others. Literacy or shamanic rituals are some early such technologies.

Upper Paleolithic Transition

We evolved to use tools. In that sense, we are natural-born cyborgs. Our clothes, our objects are tools we enhanced ourselves with biologically. Psycho technologies enhance our brain. Like literacy, which enhances our cognition by helping us to remember. Taking notes makes time obvious.If we use a computer analogy: regular technology enhances our hardware, while psycho technology is like a software upgrade. Since humans operate on pretty much the same basic hardware it can be concluded all our major advances were psychological.

Saying "How are you?" was a huge leap fwd in the interaction between human beings: It shows you are interested in others. It allows relationships built on trust and ... trading. Mindsight is the ability to pick up on other people's mental states. It is a massive cognitive advancement of people from 40,000 years ago.And once we started paying attention to others, we also started paying attention to our own mental state.

Shamanism is a cultivated ritual for altering your consciousness. It was so pervasive in prehistorical civilization, to today the shaman became an archetype: Yoda, Merlin, any old wise man are all Shamanic characters.Shamans do this through sleep deprivation, imitation of animals, isolation, or psychedelics. The goal is to create awakening experiences by disrupting the normal patterns in the world, which trap you.

How do you decide what the “right things” are? 

The 80/20 Rule states that, in any particular domain, a small number of things account for the majority of the results.

The 80/20 Rule is like a form of judo for life and work. By finding precisely the right area to apply pressure, you can get more results with less effort.

A new path will never look like the most effective option in the beginning.

The Downside of the 80/20 Rule

<ul><li>The 80/20 Rule will help you find the useful things in your past and get more of them in the future. But if you don’t want your future to be more of your past, then you need a different approach.</li><li>The downside of being effective is that you often optimize for your past rather than for your future.</li></ul>

Optimizing for Your Past or Your Future

<ul><li>Given enough practice and enough time, the thing that previously seemed ineffective can become very effective. You get good at what you practice.</li><li>The process of learning a new skill or starting a new company or taking on a new adventure of any sort will often appear to be an ineffective use of time at first.</li><li>Compared to the other things you already know how to do, the new thing will seem like a waste of time. It will never win the 80/20 analysis. </li></ul>But that doesn't mean it's the wrong decision.

Dorothy Louise Eady (1904–1981) was born in London as the only child to Reuben Ernest Eady & Caroline Mary Eady. At the age of 3, she fell down the stairs and died. The family doctor was surprised when the parents of the girl summoned him back to the house an hour later. Their daughter was alive and perfectly healthy.However, Dorothy was not the same little girl anymore.

Dorothy began speaking English with a foreign accent. She regularly came into conflict with teachers and priests for comparing "old religion" with Christianity.She also had vivid dreams of vast buildings with large columns and beautiful gardens.When she was 4, her parents took her to the British Museum in London, where she hugged Egyptian sculptures and told her parents these were her people.She asked her parents to take her home after discovering a photo of the Temple of Seti I from Egypt, all the while explaining that there used to be more trees and a beautiful garden next to the temple.

What Changed?

After marrying an Egyptian man and moving to Egytp, she found herself a job at the archaeological site near the Temple of Seti I in Abydos.She began having dreams about a past life, of being an ancient Egyptian priestess called Bentreshyt.After naming her son Sety, she gained the popular name ‘Omm Sety’ (‘Mother of Sety’) from local Egyptians. After separating from her husband she dedicated her life to the study of Ancient Egypt.

One Egyptologist tested the authenticity of her claims by asking Dorothy to identify artifacts inside of the Temple of Seti I in complete darkness. Dorothy could describe the paintings and the artifacts with astonishing accuracy, eventhough very few people knew what was inside of the temple.Archaeologists also found a garden next to the Temple of Seti I, at the exact location she had pinpointed 50 years before.All leading Egyptologists respected Dorothy, as her immense knowledge solved many ancient Egyptian mysteries.

After she retired, her son Sety asked her to move with him to Kuwait, but she refused the offer. For Dorothy, there was only one place to die: in Egypt, near ‘her’ temple.Her life is either a true story of reincarnation or a story of an extreme obsession with Egypt.
