Taking the First Step

But whenever I talk about the stages of grief, I have to remind people that the stages aren’t linear and may not happen in this order. It’s not a map but it provides some scaffolding for this unknown world. There’s denial, which we say a lot of early on: This virus won’t affect us . There’s anger: You’re making me stay home and taking away my activities. There’s bargaining: Okay, if I social distance for two weeks everything will be better, right? There’s sadness: I don’t know when this will end. And finally there’s acceptance.

Understanding the stages of grief is a start

Unhealthy anticipatory grief is really anxiety, and that’s the feeling you’re talking about. Our mind begins to show us images. My parents getting sick. We see the worst scenarios. That’s our minds being protective. Our goal is not to ignore those images or to try to make them go away — your mind won’t let you do that and it can be painful to try and force it. The goal is to find balance in the things you’re thinking . If you feel the worst image taking shape, make yourself think of the best image. We all get a little sick and the world continues.

Let’s go back to anticipatory grief

Acceptance, as you might imagine, is where the power lies. We find control in acceptance. I can wash my hands. I can keep a safe distance. I can learn how to work virtually.

Acceptance

You can also think about how to let go of what you can’t control. What your neighbor is doing is out of your control. What is in your control is staying six feet away from them and washing your hands. Focus on that.

Finally, it’s a good time to stock up on compassion. Everyone will have different levels of fear and grief and it manifests in different ways. A coworker got very snippy with me the other day and I thought, That’s not like this person; that’s how they’re dealing with this. I’m seeing their fear and anxiety. So be patient. Think about who someone usually is and not who they seem to be in this moment.

Yes. Sometimes we try not to feel what we’re feeling because we have this image of a “gang of feelings.” If I feel sad and let that in, it’ll never go away. The gang of bad feelings will overrun me. The truth is a feeling that moves through us. We feel it and it goes and then we go to the next feeling. There’s no gang out to get us. It’s absurd to think we shouldn’t feel grief right now. Let yourself feel the grief and keep going.

During the global pandemic, a palpable sense of collective grief has emerged. Grief expert David Kessler says that grief is actually multiple feelings that we must manage. In an interview with HBR, he explains how the classic five stages of grief (denial, anger, bargaining, sadness, acceptance) apply today, and the practical steps we can take to manage the anxiety. Those include balancing bad thoughts with good; focusing on the present; letting go of things you can’t control; and stocking up on compassion. Kessler also talks about a sixth stage of grief: meaning. After acceptance, he says, we will find meaning in the hard-to-fathom events and we will be stronger for it.

That Discomfort You’re Feeling Is Grief

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

You can’t be grateful and anxious at the same time. These two are handled by the same part of your brain: amygdala, and can only hold one at a time.

Neuroplasticity

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

The brain is like plastic: we can form it and train it any way we want.Everytime we feel, do, or think something, a new pathway is formed. The more we do it, the more often the brain will chose it again. This is called a habit.

If we wake up everyday filling our minds with negative thoughts, the brain will believe it. Not because it’s true, but because the brain is getting influenced by it.Hence if you believe you are going to have a bad day, you will have one.

Renew your mind. You are loved by God, always will be. Weather you are a believer or not.Think about positive things, believe positive things. And they will come. The more you practice positivity, the easier it will be for your brain to chose that way. It’s not a one time activity.

What To Do?

The Lord, Jesus Christ, payed a price for us. He wore a crown of thorns so we can have mental clarity.He loves you, always will. A simple prayer is where you talk about whatever is on your heart. God listens. Always will.

The value of ritual is in its expression, rather than its content.

Life is a succession of often unconnected, disparate encounters, interactions and relationships, managed, more or less, through habituated patterns of conscious and unconscious behaviour.Ritual represented a break from the everyday and an entry into a different realm of ritual space. It gave us the freedom to respond differently in everyday life.

Ritual as a Break

Puett and Gross-Loh argue that ritual is a kind of make believe, a form of play, or an art form that people tend to forget as they grow out of childhood.When children play, they consciously pretend and lose themselves in alternate realities, exploring imagined and different sides of themselves, and finding new and creative ways of being in the world.Confucian ritual was a cultivated form of play or performance art that could have the same effect on adults as play does on children.

Puett and Gros-Loh say: “Our patterned behaviours and rote habits – not rituals – are what really dictate our lives and get in the way of our caring for other people. But through life spent doing as-if rituals that break these patterns, we gain the ability to sense how to be good to those around us.”To deliberately engage in ritual is not to behave like an automaton. On the contrary, it can bring about a recognition of how many of our everyday, unexamined patterns of behaviour truly are the places where we act like automatons.

Habits vs Rituals

If we’re to perform ritual as if it’s true then we will need to do it wholeheartedly, which is to say, with body, speech and thought. When the whole self is engaged in activity, we participate selflessly, because no part of us is left out from the activity. Body, speech and mind are ambivalent agents. They are gateways to both enlightened and deluded activity.To put things simply, we could say that the role of the body, is to bring the hands together or to adopt the posture of meditation; understood as speech it is remain silent; and understood as thought, it is to concentrate.

1 - Set your alarm to get off 5 minutes earlier every day until you wake up early in the morning (6-7 a.m.)2 - Move your alarm clock to force yourself to get out of bed to stop it.3 - Use natural light to help your body wake up without any artificial help.4 - Meditate for at least 10 minutes to get in the zone.5 - Exercise for at least 10 minutes to wake up your body.6 - Drink a glass of water to activate your metabolism.7 - Have a healthy breakfast to get in the mood for productivity.8 - Write a diary for 10 minutes to warm up your brain and focus abilities.

Most people perform at their peak before lunch because of the spikes in concentration and alertness. So, use the first part of the day to plan your work efficiently. Then, use your laser-sharp focus to get things done.

9 - Start working at the same time every day to make it a habit.10 - Write your to-do list or <a href="https://cosmopolitanmindset.substack.com/p/the-second-brain-method">check your second brain </a>to see what you must prioritize.11 - Resist the urge to check your e-mails until you finished your planning.12 - Use specific, achievable, and time-bounded tasks.13 - Set your phone on “ Do not disturb ” to <a href="https://www.cosmopolitanmindset.com/20-sneaky-procrastination-traps-that-almost-ruined-my-life/">avoid any distractions</a>.14 - Let other people know you won’t be available until you finish your first work session.15 - Eat the frog and complete the most challenging task of the day first.16 - Work on intervals of 30-60-90 minutes to plan your tasks easier.

17 - Track your time and set deadline limits. If your time has finished, move to the next task even if you haven’t completed the task to avoid chain delays. Your evening routines should all have one goal – a great night’s sleep. Sleeping well makes you wake up more energized and productive. If you are under pressure and your Heart Rate Variability is too high, your body goes into fight-or-flight mode and shuts down the brain's frontal lobe, which handles sophisticated thinking. This leads to poor thinking and hence to poor performance.Although this is an unconscious automatic process, you can control it. You have to notice such stressful situations and control your breathing rhythm. You want a smooth rhythmic breath with a fixed ratio of inhale to exhale (e.g. 4sec in, 6sec out). This regulates your HRV, making your brain's frontal lobe work better and helping you think better.

Your Heart Rate Variability is the one that affects your performance, not your Heart Rate. You can perform well both with a high HR and a low HR, as long as your HRV is optimal. However, if your HRV gets too high, your heart rate is erratic and your performance suffers.Your HRV depends on the emotional state you're in. Positive emotions such as excitement and contentment have an optimal HRV and thus enhance your performance, whereas negative emotions like anger and apathy have an abnormally high HRV and impair your performance.

Alan is the founder and CEO of Complete Coherence Ltd. He is recognised as an international expert on leadership and human performance. He has researched and published widely on both subjects for over 18 years. He is currently an Honorary Senior Lecturer in Neuroscience and Psychological Medicine at Imperial College, London as well as an Affiliate Professor of Leadership at the European School of Management, London. He originally qualified as a physician, has a first class degree in psychology and a PhD in immunology.
