How To Master Your Focus

Harvey Spencer is flawed and fictional, yet his portrayal can teach you about confidence and power. Much of learning to convey a deep sense of confidence and power has to do with frames.Frames are the unspoken context that dictates the rules of any interaction.

Showing confidence and power

Harvey often surprises people by entering big and bold. He established the frame that the other person will react to his emotional state. You’ll often see Harvey respond slower and subdued when somebody directs him to do something. He takes his time which communicates that he doesn’t need to jump because they say so. When Harvey is in conflict with someone, he responds by not rising to it.

Control the frame with your body language and tone

Harvey has the ability to dictate the frame. Broadcasting that you’re always in control is not a good way to be,  but it does contribute to a sense of awe. Harvey frames himself as nearly omnipotent. He dictates not what he’d like to happen or what he hopes will happen but how things will undoubtedly unfold.

<ul><li>When people are nervous or want things to sound more like an invitation, they will use an upward inflection.</li><li>Commands and certainties are often spoken with downward inflections.</li><li>When you tell people what’s going to happen, you typically do it with a downward inflection.</li></ul> For the purposes of charisma, setting a higher energy frame is best in entrances and greetings, while a slower, less reactive frame is more powerful in moments of conflict.

Tonality

Challenging the content would imply that you’ve accepted their frame and need to defend yourself. Shifting the framing is a verbal way of taking back control. The simple act of not being so concerned with defending yourself when someone makes a joke about you will take you a long way. The less you focus on defending yourself, the better your banter will become.

When in confrontation, attack the frame, not the content

The unspoken frame is that others are lucky to be working with you. When others treat Harvey as inferior, he quickly asserts that he has the power to leave them.  If you’re in any kind of sales role or client-facing role, you will do much better if you shift your mindset from “I’m selling to this person” or “I work for this person” to “this person needs me to partner with them.” Rather than work for the praise of a client, Harvey allows them to earn his favour.

Have the belief that you are not there to impress

That way you can make people feel like you have total control over the situation. In reality, you only have control over the menu. The person who controls the menu controls the outcome.  Harvey is savvy enough to recognise that there is always another option that suits him better than what the menu would offer.

Become an expert at framing people’s options

In any negotiation, the person with a better second option will win. Harvey knows that he can always get another client or another job or find another way. He doesn’t need anyone specific to do anything for him. Instead, he can get what he wants and needs from various sources. In your career, create options. You are more likely to get a raise if you’ve been developing your skills in your free time and you know you could get another job.

This habit can make you poor, usually it will be seen along with the lack of your remaining budget. This habit often comes back when you are in a place that attracts attention and can make your heart happy. Examples include buying clothes at the mall, hanging out at your favorite cafe, watching movies, karaoke with friends,etc. If you don’t know how much money you have spent, it will be much easier for you to spend more. But if you know and are sensitive about which places have a tendency to spend a lot of money, it will be easier to realize and control your shopping habits in the future.

2. Not aware of impulsive shopping habits. 

Have you ever bought something, kept using it only a few times and then it became a display item in the future? everyone must have done this and it makes us wonder, why did I buy it in the first place? This can happen because when you want to shop, you don’t make a clear shopping list for what items and in what amount you actually want to buy. In the business world, companies are very skilled in this field, they just have to do great marketing tricks such as (discounts, promos, buy 2 get 1,etc.) to buyers who come to be interested in buying more.

3. Buying goods in excessive quantities.

Have you ever been to a friend’s house and his house was full of things? certainly have. When someone buys a lot of things and keeps them in the house, it will give the impression that they are rich. For example, having 2 cars, boat, bicycles, furniture, decorations that are very crowded, etc. If done often, then this bad habit can last for a long time. If you believe that buying a lot of things will make you look rich, then you are very wrong. Because rich will only be determined from the amount of cash that is currently owned, the return on investment and the number of assets owned.

4. Buy things that can give you a false sense of wealth. 

Have you ever bought an item just for the quantity over the quality? definitely yes. This bad habit can make you buy it in large quantities in a short time span, even though it has the same use. For example, glasses, shoes, smartphones, clocks, etc. If you do this often in the future, you can subconsciously make you spend more money than you originally bought because of the quality.

5.Buy because its cheap and quantity rather than a bit expensive

Perhaps this is more common among individuals who are younger in their 20s, even though it is still common among older people. Either the reason is not having a target at all or not right on target etc. If you do not have strong and clear financial ambitions, you will tend to be careless with your own money in the future. For example, you don’t have a motive for why you have to spend as needed, save more, invest more, etc.

6. Does not have a clear long-term goal. 

Try to learn to invest your money in investment instruments that exist today. do not be afraid to lose, because the risk of loss can be minimized by continuing to learn. After all, if you put money into good stocks, bonds, deposits, etc., it will definitely provide a good rate of return and it will have an impact on the growth of your assets in the future. If you only keep money in your bank account, every year you will be burdened by an inflation rate that is much higher than the bank interest income you receive. So don’t hesitate to use your extra money to invest.

7. Not investing. 

One bad behavior that can keep you poor is using credit cards carelessly, such as buying things that are not very useful and are needed in the near future. Interest rates on credit cards can damage your finances in the future because they will get bigger every month. Some people don’t realize that they are wasting money because they believe that they only need to pay small at the beginning when in the future they will pay a lot of interest. Try to avoid this so that your assets can grow bigger every month.

8. Not using credit cards properly.

Unfortunately, many of us worry too much about discussing money and finances on our own. This happens because of a negative mindset. Without realizing it, this behavior can keep you poor in the future. If you are not confident with the money you have now, how can you achieve good financial goals in the future? Try to understand the basics of material about the world of finance, how to manage money properly, how to deal with your finances, etc. so that you can increase your confidence and open your mindset for money in the future.

9. Not confident when it comes to discussing money. 

Most people, when they can earn more money, will definitely increase their spending or standard of living as well, such as buying a more expensive car, house, bicycle, smartphone, etc. If you want to be free from these problems, try to stay alive with the same expenses but increase the portion for investment. Habit 1 - Make your bed:How you do one thing determines how you do everything. Making bed would have a domino effect in life.Habit 2 - Move, Hydrate, Sunlight:Move- prime your body for the day, get the blood pumping, so that it knows that it's GO TIMEHydrate- after 6-8 hours of sleep you wake up dehydrated in the morning. 1-2 glass of water as soon as you wake up will be sufficient.Sunlight- It's important for healthy function of your circadian rhythm, to give you energy, for better sleep. You can combine this with other chores or with your morning exercise.

What is the black legend?

The term was first used by French writer Arthur Lévy in his 1893 work Napoléon Intime, in contrast to the expression "<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_Legend">Golden Legend</a>" that had been in circulation around Europe since the publication of a book of that name during the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Middle_Ages">Middle Ages</a>.

According to one study, even after six months, 46% of people who make a resolution are still successful in keeping it.This is the flip side of the six-month percentage above, but it’s a more motivating way to think about the effectiveness of the resolution setting. While it’s true that over half of those who make New Year’s resolutions ditch them halfway through the year, it’s equally true that close to half of all resolution setters are still on track to reach their goals by mid-year.

A Good Percentage of People Who Make Resolutions Still Succeed

96% of those who don’t create an annual resolution are unsuccessful in reaching those goals, from losing weight to returning to school. This percentage is far lower than the approximately half of people who made resolutions who did reach their goals.This may seem like just a matter of semantics, but these words hold real-world weight. Stating a goal simply determines the end toward which you will direct your effort.

Let’s also revisit the earlier stat that I shared, which based on a 2016 study showed that of the 41% of Americans who make New Year’s resolutions, only 9% successfully keep them by year-end. For context, consider that at the time of that study’s publication, the U.S. population was 323 million.Crunching the numbers, you find that 12 million Americans actually did achieve their resolutions, and this number would be still higher based on today’s population. When nearly 12 million people succeed in something based on taking a simple action, the method isn’t exactly a bust.

But whether the enterprise is ultimately successful is subject to unpredictable and uncontrollable external factors (or “externals,” as the Stoics called them). Thus, the good Stoic bases her self-worth and happiness not on the success of her actions, but on their correctness.

Correctness And Success Or, Intention And Outcome

The wise person considers intention, rather than outcome, in every situation. The beginnings are in our power; the results are judged by fortune, to which I grant no jurisdiction over myself… Death at the hands of a robber is not a condemnation.

Chance, says Seneca, has a great deal of power in our lives, “necessarily so, since it is by chance that we are alive.” When it comes to things over which we do not have complete control, we should play our part, we should do our best, like the Stoic archer, but we should not fret over the outcome—which, if we have done our best, is no reflection on us.

Outcome Does Not Reflect Intention

Thus, we should seek to be loveable, not to be loved, because the one is within our control whereas the other is not. Or, we should seek to write well, not to become a bestselling author, because the one is within our control whereas the other is not.So long as we focus on the things that are within our control, we will be calm and happy. But if we start concerning ourselves with things that are outside our control, we will become anxious and angry and miserable, and all on false grounds.

We Should Seek To Control What’s Within Our Control

An archer can shoot as accurately as possible and still miss his or her target. But this is no reflection on the archer. This is not quite saying that we must do our best, but that our best is the most that we can do—and is therefore all we need concern ourselves with.
