The wise person considers intention, rather than outcome, in every situation. The beginnings are in our power; the results are judged by fortune, to which I grant no jurisdiction over myself… Death at the hands of a robber is not a condemnation.

Chance, says Seneca, has a great deal of power in our lives, “necessarily so, since it is by chance that we are alive.” When it comes to things over which we do not have complete control, we should play our part, we should do our best, like the Stoic archer, but we should not fret over the outcome—which, if we have done our best, is no reflection on us.

Outcome Does Not Reflect Intention

Thus, we should seek to be loveable, not to be loved, because the one is within our control whereas the other is not. Or, we should seek to write well, not to become a bestselling author, because the one is within our control whereas the other is not.So long as we focus on the things that are within our control, we will be calm and happy. But if we start concerning ourselves with things that are outside our control, we will become anxious and angry and miserable, and all on false grounds.

There are two types of thinking, one is fast and the other is slow. Each type of thinking is its own system with individual abilities, limitations, and functions. The main difference between the two is that fast thinking requires little to no effort to operate, whereas a conscious effort is necessary for slow thinking to work. For example, you would use fast thinking to solve the problem “2 + 2 = ?” and slow thinking to fill out a tax form.

This distinction becomes very important when we realize that attention is not unlimited, and when you go beyond the budget you have, you will fail. This is why you can only do multiple things at once when they are relatively easy and undemanding tasks, such as speaking to a passenger while driving on an empty road. However, you would not attempt to have a conversation while making a turn onto a busy road as you need to focus your attention on driving.

While your two types of thinking often split the labor between themselves well, they can clash when an automatic reaction (fast thinking) comes into conflict with an intention to control it (slow thinking). A universal example of this is trying not to stare at an oddly dressed couple in the same room as you. Sometimes, these clashes are caused by cognitive illusions. An example is experiencing a strong attraction towards someone with a history that forms a negative pattern. The good news is, these illusions can be overcome.

Learn what dilated pupils mean. When your pupils are dilated, it means that you have focused your attention on something and find it interesting; maybe you are looking at an attractive person or even trying to solve a difficult math problem.2. Morning Pages are three paragraphs of writing ideally done first thing in the morning.This means, start your day by writing three paragraphs of stream-of-consciousness writing, without worrying about any grammar rules.This method of journaling was given by Julia Cameron in his book The Artist’s Way.Now, every entry of my journal starts with Morning Pages. I write what’s on my mind that morning. Now, I don’t stare at a blank page anymore.Writing a full article is hard. But writing just three paraphs is not hard, especially when it isn’t about something specific.

2. Morning Pages

As the name suggests, a dream journal is used to record your dreams.Every time you wake up from a dream, write down what you saw. Be sure to write as early as possible because we tend to forget most of the details of our dream within a few hours from waking up.I know it feels weird writing your dreams, especially the creepy ones that you don’t want to remember. But I have observed that by writing down my dreams, I can see a pattern in my thinking. Because dreams are said to be the result of what’s going on in your subconscious mind.

If you are worried about a certain thing, a mind dump journal is best for putting your chaotic mind in order.Not just for worries, you can also use this method for dumping your overwhelming thoughts and your craziest ideas.A mind dump journal helps you clear your mind by letting out your thoughts and ideas. It’s like decluttering your mind.Just get a pen and a paper, or open your note-taking app and start writing your ideas, thoughts, or any worries right now. Set a timer of 10 to 20 minutes and start writing.

Having kids showed me how to convert a continuous quantity, time, into discrete quantities. You only get 52 weekends with your 2 year old. If Christmas-as-magic lasts from say ages 3 to 10, you only get to watch your child experience it 8 times. And while it's impossible to say what is a lot or a little of a continuous quantity like time, 8 is not a lot of something.

If you find yourself thinking that life is too short for something, you should try to eliminate it if you can.

When I ask myself what I've found life is too short for, the word that pops into my head is "bullshit."If you ask yourself what you spend your time on that is bullshit, you probably already know the answer.Unnecessary meetings, pointless disputes, bureaucracy, posturing, dealing with other people's mistakes, traffic jams, addictive but unrewarding pastimes.

One heuristic for distinguishing stuff that matters is to ask yourself whether you'll care about it in the future. Fake stuff that matters usually has a sharp peak of seeming to matter. That's how it tricks you. The area under the curve is small, but its shape jabs into your consciousness like a pin.
