Psychological phenomenon named “regulatory fit”

We naturally prefer one of two basic approaches to motivatation:

  • A promotion-focused style - thinking about positive outcomes.
  • A prevention-focused style - focusesing on maintaining safety.

We experience a psychological phenomenon called "regulatory fit" when the way we approach a goal matches our preferred style. Things just feel more natural.

How regulatory fit influence moral decision-making

Degrees of moral engagement:

  • Low disengagers view morality as binding and immorality as wrong.
  • High disengagers have a flexible moral compass. They dissociate transgressive behaviours with morality when it is convenient.

Researchers found that morally flexible participants (high disengagers) are more likely to cheat on their partners. When they experience regulatory fit (it feels right), they are even more likely to cheat.

Those with a strong moral compass (low disengagers) were less likely to cheat. They're even less likely to do wrong when they are under regulatory fit.
