Misinformation is generally spread without malice or intent. Disinformation, on the other hand, is generally organized and has a specific outcome in mind. 
For example, during school days, the misinformation heard around Beef Jerky Sticks containing earthworms became so widespread that even now there are thousands of Google searches for the topic and the company even had special hotlines to handle questions.

Active social media listening is the best way to detect false information before it catches on. This is a baseline activity and its benefits reach far beyond identifying potential misinformation.Look at the data carefully to examine for a common language in comments or user-generated posts. Also, look broadly at posts your community managers are responding to and search for comments that might be otherwise overlooked in day-to-day community management (particularly if your team is large or the duty for responding rotates among different humans).

Protect Your Brand: Always Be Listening

Brands themselves sometimes contribute to a sense of confusion. Be extra clear about things that could cause confusion (like deals or things that have limited availability).  Also consider how you phrase Tweets and messages, especially if your brand is prone to phrasing things as a question. There are times when asking a question sparks community engagement. But it’s not always necessary. NPR, citing Betteridge’s Law, actually trains journalists to generally avoid it.

Brand Interactions

If you encounter false information it’s important to answer it with truth and link to a source where readers can further verify if they so choose. It is also important to do this promptly. If it is clear from a customer’s message that they are using your product or service and have encountered something that sparks a question, it’s probably not misinformation.

Correcting The Records

If someone shows up in your feed for the first time with clearly false information, take a moment to look at their other posts. Check to see if they’re a prospect or customer. If not, it is possible it may be a troll out to spread bad information about you.

You may have grown a reasonably big Instagram following for your business. You've engaged your followers and were diligent about community management, but you haven't been able to figure out how to turn your followers into paying customers.
A recent survey done by Facebook showed that 81% of respondents reported using the app to research products and services. Another survey showed that 50% of Instagram users have visited a website to buy a product or service because they saw it in Stories.

Success on social media

Convey what you're selling. When a brand builds a following, they often focus on lifestyle content that creates lots of comments and likes, but a follower may find it difficult to understand how that equates to what you're selling. One-sided relationships, also known as ‘parasocial relationships’, are blossoming distancing and national Covid-19 lockdowns. A global study of more than 15,000 people in 25 countries from security firm Kaspersky finds that just under half (47%) of social media users believe the influencers they follow provide them with ‘an escape from reality’. More than one in five (21%) believes they ‘could be friends’with influencers they follow and around the same proportion (22%) have gone as far as sending a private message to an influencer.

The Magnitude Of One-Sided Relationships 

Despite the largely virtual nature of these relationships, many users have sought out direct contact with the influencers they follow, mostly via commenting on their posts (37%) or reacting to their posts or stories (37%).More than a third (34%) of social media users have even met some of the influencers that they follow in real life, with the figure rising to 57% in the US.

The Spillover Of Virtual Relationships

During successive global lockdowns, many of us have spent long periods at home and are turning to virtual companions to replace our lost social lives. This type of one-sided relationship has a strong pull over many lives. More than seven in ten (71%) say that they learn from the influencers they follow in areas such as health, hobbies, style and news. Nearly a quarter (23%) say they are ‘dependent’ on influencer content and one in ten (10%) even say they feel a sense of absence if they do not engage with influencers.

The Invasiveness And Pervasiveness Of Parasocial Relationships

However, social media has been important for many people during the pandemic, with nearly six in ten (59%) worldwide saying social media has provided a vital connection for them during the pandemic. This figure was highest among younger people aged 18-34 (71%), who rely on social media for connectivity. People in Vietnam (94%) and South Africa (79%) are the most likely to say social media is a vital connection for them, although a third of people worldwide (33%) say they have become less tolerant to people on social media during the pandemic.

The Pandemic Effect: People Changed Over To The Opposite Camp

Although more than half (56%) of people have been on active on social media for more than a decade, many of us are still figuring out how to balance the positives of social media with the negatives. Now, we’ve moved into a new era where virtual relationships are becoming the norm. These one-sided relationships can often lead to oversharing on social media, as people look to develop these relationships. However, this can lead to a huge range of negative and unforeseen consequences – hacking and phishing attempts, doxing and bullying, online shaming – the list goes on.

The Pandemic Effect: Throwing New Weight On An Unbalanced Scale

Kaspersky has identified five types of social media persona: <ul><li>Savvy Socials - who limit their time online and keep posts to a minimum</li><li>Breezy Posters - they post prolifically over relatively short periods of activity</li><li>Oversharers – these people virtually live online and post like crazy!</li><li>Lurkers – they might spend a lot of time on social, but they’re just here to surf, not to comment</li><li>Offliners – these people are either inactive, never joined, or deleted many of their social media accounts</li></ul>

Conscious “excluders,” who despite various corporate interventions, continue to treat some folks differently due to their social group membership, may help explain the recent stagnation in progress toward gender equality in organizational leadership. Excluders disadvantage women’s employment opportunities, perpetuating inequality in various ways. This exclusion isn’t exclusive to gender diversity. These five practices can detect the bad apples who exclude women, mothers, childfree women, people with disabilities, members of racial and ethnic minorities, mature employees, LGBTQ+ persons, etc.

Gender Inequality: Conscious Exclusions

Excluders disadvantage women’s employment opportunities, perpetuating inequality in various ways:Disadvantage in hiring and promotions: The bias that can negatively affect an individual applicant’s hiring or promotion success comes in two forms: Direct bias caused by a hiring manager’s bias affecting their own decision, or indirect bias caused by channelling the bias of another.Work-family policies: Comments like those of the board member above inform a company’s work-family policies, their use, and reactions to their use throughout the company via top-down influence and behaviour.

Common Ways Excluders Function

The practice of exclusion should be visible and include specific individual behaviors (e.g., inviting the same, incomplete part of a team for lunch or after-work drinks) and organizational behaviors. The repeated action proves the wrong practice, and can therefore be dealt with appropriately by the managers

Establishing a clear definition of exclusion

Contacting candidates’ references can often reveal excluders before they make it into your company. You can also ask candidates to write or speak about their specific experience with and approach to working with individuals from diverse communities, as well as how they might foster inclusion at work and in their teams.

Conscious Exclusion: Making it an explicit hiring criteria

Clear, measurable criteria and accountability are key here. Accurate, up-to-date data can be integrated into 360 performance reviews alongside assessments of other organizationally relevant KPIs and used to identify potential excluders in their annual performance reviews.

Making Inclusion an explicit performance criteria

Reward inclusive leaders with incentives and recognition, such as highlighting them as role models within the organization, publicly recognizing or celebrating inclusive behaviors and practices, or linking specific inclusive behavior to bonuses. For example, The Lego Group tracks, promotes and celebrates some of these leadership initiatives.
