The default mode in your company or organisation you're part of dictates a lot of dynamics inside an organisation on three main levels:<ul><li>Personal default mode. Every person has a default mode at work. It is their comfort zone of what they do the most, such as talking or working on a computer.</li><li>Processes. Companies need hardcoded processes. When the process works and people's default mode aligns with the process, the company works well together.</li><li>Company culture. The default mode of how people behave in an organisation.</li></ul>

Default mode

Think about what modes you have in your company? What modes do your colleagues have? For example, in an office, the main modes would be "talking with people" and "doing things on a computer." If you do more talking, your main responsibilities are possibly passing information, organizing people, making decisions. You are most likely in a leadership position. If you spend more time with a computer, you probably do the actual work.

Personal default mode

<li> People require more effort and control to do a task or activity that's not part of their default mode. If you need someone to do something outside of their default mode, start with small steps and slowly introduce the new activity.</li>
<li>When hiring people, try to identify what's their personal default mode. Ask what their typical day at work looked like? What tasks would they prefer to avoid?</li>
<li>When there are no clear goals and instructions, most people focus on doing what they're good at or most comfortable with instead of what the company needs. E.g. overengineering in tech companies.</li>

Implications of the personal mode

Most organisations need hardcoded processes for the company to work as a well functioning machine.  However, processes create habits. People who carry out processes stop thinking critically. When processes are too strict without a degree of autonomy and feedback, the organisation will run on old habits.

Processes are a double-edged sword

There are acceptable default behaviours, "how we do things here" which people learn through osmosis and which can become habitual. If an organisation is not pro-actively defining its culture, it will assume whatever default modes there happen to be. For example:<ul><li>Do people trust their colleagues by default or exercise caution?</li><li>What's the default atmosphere in the organisation? Are people excited to show up at work?</li><li>Do people care about their work, or do they just tick checkboxes?</li></ul>

A good way to create a company culture that stays fresh and relevant through growth is to create the foundation with a shared mission and values, but also offer freedom for individual expressions.

65% of CEOs agree that culture is vital to their company's performance, yet only 16% are satisfied with its strength. Values are critical to company culture. When the road ahead is uncertain or needs a difficult decision, values will give clarity. There are two types of culture.<ul><li>Aspirational values are about how you want to show up.</li><li>Foundational values are about who you already are. It can unite your team from the moment of hiring.</li></ul>

Build a culture that's foundational, not aspirational

Company growth is not just about products and services but also people and teams. That means creating space for subcultures to emerge. For example, your sales team may have a different working style than your product team.
Leaders may view subcultures as a threat, but embracing them can help the larger teams thrive because of their differences. For example, one team can have a stronger bias toward urgency that expresses their passion for speed and dedication to the customer.

Subcultures have different principles, not different values

Promoting individual expression and subcultures doesn't mean free for all. Everyone should still enjoy it in the end. CEOs should encourage projects or ideas that align with company values. A CEO should communicate what works and what doesn't. When the boundaries for culture and subculture are clear, it boils down to patience. A strong culture will be self-monitoring. But if something or someone doesn't mix well with the company values, it is easily seen in conflict or problems.

Subcultures inside your company is critical to scaling your business

The pandemic accelerated our virtual world of work. For many, in-person gatherings turned into video call-only meetings overnight. Tools and platforms like Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Slack, and Workplace from Facebook became mission-critical to collaborating with teammates and getting work done. 
Now, some companies like Meta (née Facebook) and Microsoft plan to create the platforms and tools for organizations to operate in a virtual workspace—for employees to go beyond two-dimensional Zoom calls and interact with colleagues in three-dimensions via an avatar in a virtual environment.

A virtual workspace is an online environment where employees communicate, collaborate, and/or work. Many are already familiar with two-dimensional virtual workspaces thanks to remote work. If not, think platforms like Zoom and Microsoft Teams. 
While three-dimensional virtual workspaces are less common, some companies are aiming to make them the next wave of how we work. What’s the difference? Instead of seeing coworkers on a video-call grid, employees in a three-dimensional workspace would join them (with an avatar) in a virtual office.

Meta/Facebook is not the only gig in town. A number of companies have already made waves (i.e., investments) in building the metaverse. Gaming platform Roblox has shared its vision for a place where “people can come together within millions of 3D experiences to learn, work, play, create and socialize.”
Meanwhile, Epic Games (the company behind Fortnite) has raised $1 billion from investors to help with its plans for building the metaverse. Companies like Microsoft and chipmaker Nvidia have also expressed intent to build the metaverse.

Many CEOs like Jobs are known for thought leadership because of their authority in an area, their ability to define important terms for the future, and more.

An Example Of A Real Thought Leader

Fran Blanche fancies herself a “geek girl who makes stuff.” She had the foresight to combine her engineering background and “goofball” personality in weekly how-to videos (“Fran in the Lab”) that feature her fiddling with electronic components—something she knows like the back of her hand. Fran’s formula works. She’s amassed (to date) 242,000 subscribers to her YouTube channel. That makes customers feel heard, understood, and cared for--emotional cues that help cement the memory of the encounter in their heads. Be sure to not just signal ownership, but to actually take ownership.
