In-office vs remote workers

In-office vs remote workers

Dilemma: Since March 2020, staff started working remotely, and many have moved far away. Although a company may largely stay remote, they may want employees to come back to the office a few times per month.

Solution: First, consider if people really need to come back to the office. If you have been working remotely for nearly two years, it might be unnecessary.

Employees from different states can be problematic

Employees from different states may be subject to employment laws and taxes for where they work that can impact your business, so it might be reasonable to give them fair notice and terminate them if they choose not to come back.

However, terminating your good employees because you want to change to in-office work will impact the morale of your remaining employees.

Consider your business needs

Consider if you need employees who can come into the office regularly.

For example:

  • Do you need employees to live within commuting distance?
  • How often will they need to go into the office?
  • Will you have to reimburse them for travel, and if so, how much will it cost you?

Ensure to ask your employees if they want to return to the office. They can share if they think remote work is effective or if the business will do better by returning to the office.

Creating a hybrid office

  • When deciding that hybrid work is more suitable, don't try and lure candidates with a "remote" job headline, only to change it to "mostly" remote.
  • Be clear about your expectations. For days in the office, state when people need to be there and when they can work from home. It could be a set amount of days per week or month or project-based.

Re-evaluate the situation after a year as change can be difficult and needs some time.
